I've been doing aikido and kenpo karate for a few years now, and it was never a problem before (although I never really got into sparring) but since I've started sparring, everytime I go I get a light concussion. I mean feeling pretty stunned after the hit, even when it's really not that hard, getting a headache later, feeling tired, depressed, and generally sick for a day or so afterwards. I could deal with a bloody nose everytime I spar, but I don't want to mess around with this.
I know it probobly means my sparring days are over, but I thought I might as well make the post in case anybody has some input.

concussions are healthy.

Seriously, I honestly don't know what to say. Probably want to talk to a doctor.

Shit happens, it was a problem for me for a while, so I stopped striking altogether. When I tried again after about four months, everything went perfectly, haven't had one since. I have no explanation, but give your brain some time to heal and then see what happens.

yeah, I've talked to my family doctor. She recommended against sparring, but yeah, I imagine I'll keep trying every few months and hope something changes. Or maybe I'll drink a crapload of alcohol and hope I kill enough brain cells for my brain to shrink so there's more fluid between my brain and skull :p

Does that actually happen?

Every time your concussed, you're more susceptible to future concussions. Do you really know what a concussion is, or are you just getting headaches?

That's the million dollar question there. I've been beaten quite a few times to the point of feeling totally concussed, without having an actual concussion. Yes, you might be dazed as fuck... what else do you think getting punched in the face is going to do, but if you haven't been diagnosed as having an actual concussion... well then.

If you really are getting concussions, you should stop doing what causes them. But I´m not sure if you´re getting real concussions here. Light sparring shouldn´t give you it. Do you have a pencil neck or similar?

your not getting light concussions.

Your getting hit in the face. You dont like it, your making it to be worse than it is. Toughen the fuck up. After awhile you'll get used to it(sort of)

Buy a Shock Doctor mouthpiece and headgear asap if you are going to spar. I'm pretty sure you have some boil and bite bullshit that only protects your teeth. Spend some grip on this, its not something you want skimp on.

You are probably in the same boat as me, I was concussed a year and a half ago and I can't spar without getting headaches and feeling disconnected even with a brain bucket and a nice mouthpiece. I don't want to end up with anything permanent so I pretty much quit karate/boxing, school and work demands helped that decision along too.

I still think your full of shit, but serious if your right then and they are concussions, how many times have you been diagnosed by your doctor as having them????

Seriously, over the last 6 months how many have you had?????

Rightfully, family doctors don't know everything. They are extremely under-educated in the demands of combat athletes. They think that every person with a headache has a concussion, and everyone with a sore shoulder has a torn rotator cuff.

If you really get concussions through light sparring, get a CT scan. You have a serious head trauma that needs to be diagnosed.

just because you get stunned a bit and get knocked doesnt necessarily mean its a concussion. You should probably check with your doctor. Secondly, cover your face. Youll never get a concussion if you dont get bashed :D

This is true. Quite often, the methods doctors use to diagnose people are inaccurate and can be bypassed with common sense. That's one thing they can't teach in medical school - common sense.

Comcussions generally induce nausea. If you're not throwing up, I would doubt it's a concussion.

Another tell tale sign is if you get KTFO'd or you have a long lapse in memory. When I had my concussion there was about 8 or 9 minutes of time where I was awake and I have absolutely no recollection of.

Alright, here's how I felt after the last one. Symptoms either related to or not.

After impact I was stunned of course, didn't think too much of it, felt somewhat out of it for 10 minutes or so. For the rest of the night I had a headache, was tired and depressed for no apparant reason, my thinking was blurry as hell, and I felt fine the next day. The one before that, I felt sick as hell and had a murderous headache for almost a week, but I wasn't tired and my thinking was fine. My doctor called them light concussions after I described the symptoms to her. The head instructor at my karate dojo didn't comment to much, he just told me it wasn't worth the risk. My instructor I usually go to class with brought up that it could be caused by neck pain.

I'm inclined to go with my doctors opinion for the moment, although perhaps I'll ask another doctor once I get the chance, or a sports doctor who would be better versed in these types of injuries.

How mature. I'm sure you're quite warrented in your statement though, I mean why wouldn't I lie about getting a concussion on a message board?

And apparantly I've had 3 in the past 6 months, two from sparring, one from work.

Dude, definetely get a cat scan. Also I suggest finding new sparring partners who don't give you concussions.

When I spar with my buddies, we typically don't wear headgear, have our mouthpieces dangling out of our mouths, and still the worst injury we get is a bit of leather on and eyeball or some bruises from low kicks (except when I broke my buddies foot with a checked low kick).

Just take it easy out there. Sparring is no fun at 97%

This sounds like a typical weekend with a bottle of Jack for me.
