I'm trying to find out which foods can help me during/after HARD practices, workouts, and even before and after fights. I've been slacking off and I haven't been eating as good as I should. I feel that when I eat bad food, it effects me horribly (like not having enough energy, or feeling dehydrated).

Anyone know some good food/drinks to have?

Thanks.

water is a good drink after a good workout, if you want, during a workout you can drink watered down gatorade

probably the best

Yeah, you're right. After a workout, I usually drink 6 bottles of water. Before the workout, RIGHT before, I don't drink that much or I will throw it up. Also, my coach doesn't let me drink much during training so it will be hard with the gatorade. Thanks for you advice.

There's an interview with Dr. John Berardi specifically relating to the needs of grapplers. I typically just drink some gatorade pre workout and maybe a light turkey sandwich and have a full meal afterwards. During a long day of tournaments I'll typically munch on some type of rice/chicken concoction and drink gatorade.......expect my last tourney where I didn't eat anything for 10 hours before I competed.

Flavored water and bananas before. Flavored water during. Flavored water and peanut butter and honey sandwiches after. Sometimes a protien shake.

Hmm well, for working out I have a protein shake (whey made w/milk) beforehand ... and most likely a protein shake afterwards. Sometimes I'll just have a large meal afterwards, but that would just be when my workouts are close to dinner.

When I was doing bjj regularly I would be concerned mostly with keeping hydrated which meant water/sports drink. Sometimes I would have a protein shake afterwards (if I had worked out before bjj) but it was one that mixed fine with water and would go down easy.

In that the taste of it is about the worst thing imaginable.

Oh, well taste is a process of acustomization. If you get used to anything it will start to taste good to you. Similarly if you stop eating something for long enough, it will start to taste disgusting to you.

That's why I love mountain and hate beer. Plus high GI carbs post workout will lower insulin levels. Low insulin levels are optimum for muscle building state. My mountain dew addiction is a supplement for weight lifting. At least that's what I try to convince myself of when I'm crying myself to sleep at night.

I've only been eating 3 meals a day. I'm really trying to focus on calorie reduction, trying not to eat more than 1700 a day. The goal is to lose about 20 pounds in a month and a half.

Breakfast: 3 egg whites/ 1 cup of skim milk /
Lunch: Something at the chow hall, like steamed veggies and cottage cheese, etc.
Dinner: Whatever my wife makes. She's on this new Body For Life diet thing, so she only makes healthy shit now.

I try to drink about 4 16oz bottles of water a day, too.

After I get to 205, I'm going to get back into training. I've let myself get so out of shape that I knew I couldn't do both.
