I have been fighting a short while and I am trying to improve my flexability. I cant get an effective triangle because I'm not flexible enough. I am currently enrolled at the EPS grappling. Also wanted to give a shout out to E. Thanks

If you want to get tips on your triangle and flexibility then this should be in the training forum.

If you want to just introduce yourself, well there is already a thread for that in Freestyle.

Either way, this isn't the right place to post this.

I see you are in Iraq as well, do you partake in the dreaded PT or are you willing to risk it all as a martyr like the great Delta?

I think it's safe to say that the only people in the world who aren't flexible enough to do a triangle have spina bifida and Loud Gehrig's disease. You probably aren't doing it right

My brother weighs 400 pounds and he can cross an ankle over his leg. A triangle takes even less flexibility.

Don't ever talk about me like this behind my back!

But yes, I've been known to do a triangle or two, from time to time.

Ps. Way to show up for class :(

I would guess that you're not getting sideways enough on your triangles. Let's say you've got your left leg against the guys neck, so you've got his left arm trapped inside. You need to pivot so you're looking at the side of his face. Get your leg straight across the back of his neck, parallel to his shoulders. Once you do that, you dramatically cut the size of the area you're triangle has to cover, and you're triangle will then be in a much more effective spot.

Always get sideways!

Welcome to the board, bro :D

Yeah, you probably need to get used to moving and adjusting your hips. The sooner you become familiar with hip movement, the better...

the fact that your training with delta leads me to believe your mma carreer is over before its started.

What is EPS grappling? How are you enrolled in a grappling school while out in Iraq?

I agree with CHH... The chances are it's not about flexibility. It's that you're leaving out a detail and you're not doing the triangle right. Either that or it's not tight enough.

Triangle Choke

http://members.aol.com/nyjiujitsu/TC1.JPG

1. Your opponent is in your guard and has made the mistake of leaving one arm between your legs, and one arm out.

http://members.aol.com/nyjiujitsu/TC2.JPG

2. Secure the arm he has left behind, and extend your hips upward to get your (in this case) right knee above his neck. Keep your opponent very close to you and pull his arm in tightly.

Lifting your hips here gives you the clearance to lock the leg completely around your opponent's neck - when training with a small opponent you will not need to do this, but it is my recommendation that you do anyway for practice - since it will be essential against a larger opponent. Don't train bad habits.

3. Keep your opponent's arm across your belt line as shown, and bend your leg over the back of his neck, pulling down on your ankle. As you do this, shift your body to your right side - your head should not be in line with his.
Be careful on larger opponents not to use your foot to pull down on - this puts stress on the ankle!

Your opponent's arm MUST stay across his neck to complete this choke!

4. Lock your left leg over your right ankle behind the knee joint (above your calf) completing the triangle with your legs. At this point your right elbow can be used to keep your opponent's right arm in place, so you can put both hands on the top of his head.

5. To complete the choke, do three things:

Lift your hips.
Pull down on his head.
Squeeze with your legs, keeping your self to the side.
As long as your opponent is not passing your guard, persist with this choke, some people do a good job of playing 'possum' on this one.

Now remember, this is the basic triangle. Other teachers might show you different ways of doing it or setting it up but in the end it's very similar.

Thank you guys for the tips. I think the main reason I couldn't get the triangle was because I had too much room between me and my opponent. So lifting my hips and pulling them closer was the answer.

Have you ever grappled with E? He's pretty damn good. Not many soldiers can tap him out. I see though from your previous posts that you and him dont exactly see I to I on a number of issues. Feel free to give me any useful tips to try to tap him out though.

A few soldiers with the knowledge of grappling started a class out here during our PT time

I gathered that from the pictures. Thanks for the reply though.
