View Full Version : speculation: Forrest vs Bonnar rematch this year?

So I was thinking before, that the UFC is in slight trouble for later on this year with headlining title bouts(now that Franklin is out for 8 months).
Rch Franklin is MIA until NOVEMBER the earliest. Chances are we wont see him again until February.
Chuck is claiming he'll make his August title defense probably vs Babalu (via chuck @ wec march 06) from his toe surgery.
NOW where do we go with UFC PPV' main events for the rest of th eyear?
April-forrest vs tito /arlovski vs sylvia.
may gracie vs hughes
august-???
october???
november???
August should be rumored to be Liddell vs Babalu.
Tito is "contracted for 3 fights in 06" per his contract. So you'd assume he's going to fight if healthy August to help support the LHW title match as a co main event. Then he'll fight again in MAYBE November?
October or November we should see a title match between whoever is alive come that time between Arlovski,Sylvia, Monson,PeDePano and Vera.
No MW title matches since Franklins injured.
I doubt well see a LW title main event any time soon. not even as aco main event for a PPV.
Now you have Matt Hughes. Who normally fights every 5-6 months since 03ish. He's fighting Gracie in May. Then it is safe to assume he'll defend his title vs GSP in october which works out well for the UFC giving them a solid main event for that show.
NOW you ask yourself... "But Dyno sai dhe thinks we'll see Bonnar vs Griffen 2 in 06".
THIS is where I am going with it.
WITHIN 2 weeks of each other Griffen and Bonnar are fighting in their respective matches in April.
IF Bonnar wins his fight as a UFN main eventer, AND Griffen either 1. defeats Tito or 2 has a hard fought match and loses a close jd to Ortiz. Come August OR the last 2 shows of th eyear being October or Noevember. Putting the Season 1 finalist vs each other in a PPV main event could be enough to sell out an arena plus bring in huge ppv sales for a non title main event.
WHAT COULD bring major importance to this match especially if it happens, is if Forrest AND Stephen win their matches in April, BOTH FIGHTERS have won 3+matches since becoming full time UFC fighters. An average fan between TUF1, and Unleashed shows AND UFN's would have seen these guys fight a total of SEVEN MATCHES. That's huge obviously. So my point is, even with good competition @ 205. the UFC is going to need a big name to sell in a title match for SUPER BOWL WEEKEND 07 in February. Traditionally it's been a LHW title fight @ Mandalay Bay for "Super Saturday". Putting Chuck Liddell/Babalu vs Griffen/Bonnar
as a MAIN EVENT TITLE MATCH would be huge for whoever is involved financially and notariety wise.
JUST SAY babalu defeats Chuck Liddell in August and becomes champ, putting him vs. arguable one of the top4 faces in the UFC,after Liddell, in Bonnar or Griffen, would be huge for the UFC and Babalu in terms of name and face recognition.
So my timeline for the rest of the year in PPV main events would look like based on assumption would be as follows.
april- griffen vs ortiz, arlovski vs sylvia
may- hughes vs gracie
august- liddell vs babalu (& possibly ortiz vs Shamrock2?)
october- HW title match between arlovski, sylvia, vera, monson, pedepano. & ww title Hughes vs GSP
November- griffen vs bonnar? plus third and final ortiz match per his contract (if he defeats Griffen and SHamcrook, the third fight is written to be a title fight)
So November which since 02 or 03 has ALWAYS been a tebacle of a PPV sales wise for the UFC, now has astrong final push for the year of 06.
Even if Ortiz doesnt fight for the come November, he could fight anyone FROM Bablu(who would be fresh off a loss to Liddell if he fought Ortiz come November) to making a name out of HW and LHW prospect in Brandon Vera.
ofcourse the long shot could always be a 3 round fight between Couture fresh out of retirement for 1 fight, vs ortiz because "im gonna spank him again".
thoughts?

Their first fight was really good... but I dont like any of them.
They arent true athletes, sure they train hard but genetically theyre just regular people.
Tito will whoop Forrest, simply because he is a better human.

I was also thinking about this alot. As the sport progresses I think you will need to be both an awesome athlete and have the talent, simply training your ass off isn't going to get you there anymore.

Thats why simply anybody somewhat fit could potentially make it big in MMA.
You can literally drop weight, train your ass off, get connections, go to shooto and pwn 90% of the fighters there. Thats what I want to do.
I think Forrest is good for todays fighters, but in 10 years we will have more Kevin Randlemans, Rampages, Silvas, Shoguns, Arlovskis, Gomis etc. That will be when MMA takes over.
Martial arts has evolved from skinny white guys with the death touch and no fighting experience to big strong, wellrounded fighters, soon theyll be all that but Alpha males.

So are we just screwed for June and July?
Overall a pretty good analysis. Don't you think that the WW belt could be defended on a different PPV than the HW belt? They might spread that out to make sure they have a guaranteed big named bout for more PPVs.
Also, can't you see Ortiz x Shamrock be in August and have Ortiz call out the winner of Liddell x Babalu which would take place later that night. I see it happening already. We all know that he has it in his contract, but he'll still run his mouth about it for 10 minutes in the ring before Rogan cuts him off. GOD, I'm hating Tito for something he won't do for another 5 months! Why is his head so big!?!?! ARGGHHHH
Edit- and why is this in the spoiler forum? Did Dyno think this was the Rumor Mill AGAIN?

The only way I see it happening is if Forrest loses to Ortiz (which he will.)
Then, they will be matched up.
And I see Bonnar taking it, easy.
And it won't be a slugwar.

hehe i thought it was teh rumor mill i didnt look.
the reason for putting huges' ww title defense WITh the hw title show is because the HW's HAVENT proved successful in headlining ppv's alone (june 05 and november 05).
The reason i dont think we'll have a June ppv this year is because we have a show on May 27th. Doing a show even @ the end of June AND THEN AUGUST would work. but for some reason we always have a large gap between a June and August PPV.
Also the UFC's press releases describing their brand on press releases state "Holding approximately 8 live ppv events per year" so, Feb,March,April,May,August,october,november...
So we COULD have a JUNE ppv which would make sense PLUS its right around the finale i think of TUF3... and makes a good event to promote Shamrock vs Ortiz 2.

I dount Tito will get another title shot, I doubt he wants it.
Tito hasnt done enough to warrant a title shot. I know that people have got title shots for less but Dana doesnt like Tito, and I dont think Silva likes him either, I doubt it will happen.
Tito should wait for Chuck to get a few more fights in, get too comfortable with his position and work hard on upper body takedowns, or kicks, both should work well on Chuck.
The UFC should invest some money in Rampage. I have a feeling he will be ready to go to the UFC and destroy the LHW division.
I think Ninja would do well in the LHW div. The UFC should invest a ton of money on him, and get Chute Boxe into its list of allies. Ninja wont want to fight MW if he can go up a level, hes a big guy and only avoiding the weightclass because of Shogun and Silva. Not to mention the advantage of elbows will be alot better for them then the knees. MT elbows are fucking sharp.

obviously you've never seen Forrest grapple?
Submission-forrest
striking-forrest
endurence-tito
heart-forrest
cage rust-tito
forrest is soo fucking slick on the ground that you havent seen it used in TUF1 or his recent ufc fights.
Tito's LAST THREE UFC APPEARENCES ARE AS FOLLOWS
split jd win over Vitor in what Feb 05?
loss to Liddell
Loss to Couture
Before than ANOTHER YEAR LAYOFF and a good win over Shamcrook?
In the course of 8 months Tito's scheduled to have more fights than he has in 3 years.... Strange.
As MSIA would say "Forrest is a stud".
So dont go out dismissing Forrest because Tito's training partners aren't what they used to be, and Tito's recent track record of fights suggest his better fights may infact be past him.

tito stated on mma weekly right after he came back.
It's a 3 fight deal for 3 fights this year(he didnt say within a year aka 365 days, he said this year meaning 2006) he said the first fight is vs forrestt, then he made asnide remark about showing the new guy whos cage it is.... then he said the second fight is vs shamrock, i wouldnt be surprised if he said that loud mouth punk shamrock, then the third fight is for the title to get my title back.
SOOOOOOOOOOO... taking that for what it is worth, it is contractually written with stipulations that if he wins 2, then he gets the third fight for the belt.

Looking realistically, Tito will not be subbed. Tito will be equal Striking, he isnt a bad striker, and is alot bigger. Heart wont be a factor because Tito wants that belt more then anything.... and Tito lost against 2 very good guys. Common Chuck and Randy? Theyre amazing.
He will get Forrest down and pound him ugly, he will look like the fight against Bonnar.
I see no way Forrest can win, unless Tito's ring rust makes him do something stupid. Is he still with Oyama?

im not saying tito will get subbed.
But he may get choked, and forrest has the best chance of subbing tito since tito last fought probably under 200lbs.
btw i think oyama is out of coaching period.
oyama officialy broke up with ramp after his loss to shogun. oyama hasnt been in rodriguez's corner either in his recent lard filled matches.
so i am assuming he wont be in tito's corner.

Good. Oyama is a b-level trainer.

Most definitely. UFC wouldn't miss this opportunity to reel in the big bucks. If I'm not mistaken the fight between those two still has the highest rating for ANY UFC fight EVER on TV. Not that there have been many, but you get the point.

Okay then.
Regardless, Tito stalemated fucking Arona on the ground in ADCC. Chances of Forrest subbing him are negligible. Heart or not, gas will matter. Forrest gasses end of every first round. Tito hasn't slowed down, much less gassed, since Frank Shamrock. Just like every other semi-decent striker, Forrest will knock Tito down. Then Tito will take him down. And elbow him. Repeatedly.
