(1) Detroit vs. (8) Edmonton - EDMONTON IN 6
(2) Dallas vs. (7) Colorado - COLORADO IN 5
(3) Calgary vs. (6) Anahiem -
(4) Nashville vs. (5) San Jose - SAN JOSE IN 5

Eastern

(1) Ottawa vs. (8) Tampa Bay - OTTAWA IN 5
(2) Carolina vs. (7) Montreal - CAROLINA IN 6
(3) New Jersey vs. (6) New York R - NJD IN 4
(4) Buffalo vs. (5) Philedelphia - BUFFALO IN 6

For me:
Detroit is too good for Edmonton and their average goaltending. Detroit has the best PP in the league and some great players (including probably Norris winner and QB on their PP, Lidstrom). Detroit in 5
This is really a pickem, but I'll go with Dallas in 7 - Probably the toughest series to call.
Calgary will be too much for Anaheim, their top 6 D are all healthy, which hasn't been the case most of the year, and Calgary steps it up in the playoffs. Calgary in 6 hard fought games.
Thorton's playing too good right now for that team to lose. SJ in 6

Ottawa will be just fine without Hasek for now. Too much offensive talent, plus great defense. Ottawa in 5.
Montreal usually steps it up in the playoffs, and Huet is playing great. However, I think Stall and co will step up, and Gerber will play his best. Carolina in 7.
I'm gonna go for New York here just cause I don't like the style the Devils play. I did used to like watching them just for Stevens though, and they still do have one of the best goalies in the league. I'm hoping for NY in 6, but I wouldn't be surprised to see NJ take it.
Forsberg will step up his game, and when he does, he's the hardest player to stop in hockey. Forsburg at the top of his game = Gagne scoring, which will lead to the Flyers winning. Philly in 6.

Finally something you seem to be knowledgable about. ;)
Although you are wrong about the Devil's style. They play a responsible style now, but not overly defensive. As a matter of fact, when Philly had a lead on them in their last encounter they went into the trap. This isn't the Devils team that won in '95.

Here are my picks and I won't go into detail, but ask about any you want to hear the reasoning for:

(1) Detroit vs. (8) Edmonton - Detroit in 5
(2) Dallas vs. (7) Colorado - Dallas in 7
(3) Calgary vs. (6) Anahiem - Anaheim in 7
(4) Nashville vs. (5) San Jose - San Jose in 6

Actually, after I finish up my lunch I'll come back and explain a few of the picks. I doubt this thread will fill up too fast in the mean time.

(1) Detroit vs. (8) Edmonton -
This can go either way. Sure Detroit won the conference but Manny Legace isn't anything special and mots of their key players are old...
(2) Dallas vs. (7) Colorado
tough one to call but I have to bet on Dallas. Colorado's rooster is pretty much same what they had when they won Stanley cup except no Bourque and Forsberg.
(3) Calgary vs. (6) Anahiem -
Calgary in 4 to 6 games. I wouldn't be suprised to see Calgary in the finals again.
4) Nashville vs. (5) San Jose
Like KZ told Thornton can alone beat Nashville.

1) Ottawa vs. (8) Tampa Bay
I don't see Ottawa winning this one so easily. Ottawa in 7 games

(2) Carolina vs. (7) Montreal -
Caroline in 4 to 6 games.
Montreals weak defence vs Eric staal.

(3) New Jersey vs. (6) New York Rangers
This IMO the most intresting series. I hope I have chage to watch this on TV. I say 6 or 7 games no idea who is going to win this.

(4) Buffalo vs. (5) Philedelphia
Before season started Everyone was picking Philadelphia to win this shit. I have to go with Flyers. Why they have so much better players and I kind of like the style they plays.

(1) Detroit vs. (8) Edmonton - Detroit in 5
Detroit has so much depth its scary. Yzerman is playing like he's .. well ... like 34 instead of 41. Legace won't have to be that good in the series. The only question mark is if Datsyuk will be back in time for this series.

(2) Dallas vs. (7) Colorado - Dallas in 7
Dallas will take this one, the only reason I gave them 7 games to do it is because afaik they are sans Modano at the moment. They have a great defense. A streaky Turco, who always manages to find a way to win. Also, we should look at what Colorado doesn't have which brought them success in the past: They are without Forsberg, Roy, Borque. Hejduk had a god awful season and the guy who stepped up due to Milan's lackluster season, Marek Svatos, is out and injured. The only thing they have going for them is that Sakic knows how to win, Brunette has recently stepped up his play, and Theodore is capable of inhuman play.

(3) Calgary vs. (6) Anahiem - Anaheim in 7
Calgar has been dissapointing the whole season. Iginla who? These guys just can't seem to score. Kipprusoff may be able to steal some games, but I don't think he will be able to steal the series. If Anaheim gets production out of more than just Selanne and MacDonald then Calgary is in some real trouble. I'm giving Anaheim the edge due to Giguere gettin giggy with it and the Finnish Flash ... you know ... flashing around.

(4) Nashville vs. (5) San Jose - San Jose in 6
Nashville just lost Vokoun. Ouch. They are also missing the small, but largely important Sullivan. There backup has stepped up and had success, but these are the playoffs and rookies crack. Thornton and Cheechoo are the 1-2 punch which took the season by storm and got Jumbo Joe the scoring title and Cheechoo the Rocket Richard trophy. These guys are going to keep on keeping on.

Eastern

(1) Ottawa vs. (8) Tampa Bay - Ottawa in 5
Tampa's goaltending has been under fire all year, from the media and even their coach. Their stars haven't performed to expectations *cough*St. Louis*cough* and they have all together not lived up to much. Ottawa has Heatley, Alfredsson, Spezza, Havlat just got back into the line up. Their defense is slowly getting back healthy. These guys are GOOD. Ottawa may be missing Hasek, but they could beat Tampa with a shootor tutor in net.

(2) Carolina vs. (7) Montreal - Carolina in 4
Montreal is a tough bunch of critters, but Kovalev won't pull anything spectacular off here, this isn't the '90s anymore. Carolina is a great mix of speed and youth with age and experience. The fact that Gerber's play has been slipping can only make the games a bit more exciting, it won't be enough for Montreal to win. These guys met 4 times in the regular season and Carolina wiped the floor with them each time.

(3) New Jersey vs. (6) New York R - NJ in 6
OMG The Rangers are back in the playoffs! Rejoice! See ya. The Devils are the hottest team in the league right now. You can't argue that and their record 11 game win streak (best of any team in the league this season) speaks for itself. These guys were down 3-0 half way through the game against Montreal and found a way to win. That's what they do. Find ways to win. With a bonafide top scorer in Gionta in the lineup, and Elias finding ways to make the 2nd line work as well, they are a threat every night. The Rangers game plan is simple, get the puck to Jagr. Simple gameplans don't work well against the Devils. Jagr will be shut down and the team will falter. Lundqvist just returned to the line up and hasn't played much recently and their defense has never been 'playoff tough.' The Devils ... who do they have in net again? Oh, Marty Brodeur, that's right. Three time champion, the only player with 9 30+ win seasons, the only player with 5 40+ win seasons. *catches breath* Yeah. Devils in 6.

(4) Buffalo vs. (5) Philadelphia - Buffalo in 6
Buffalo is probably the most underrated team in the playoffs. I think they are a legit threat to go really far. These guys are FAST and they play hard. They are one of hte best skating teams in the league and they don't have a star on their team. Sucks for them right? Nope, they have great depth and 7 20+ goal scorers. So while the Sabres have to concentrate on keeping a check on Forsberg, who do the Flyers concentrate on? That brings me to my next reason. I followed Forsberg closely this year (had him in my other Fantasy team) and he just CAN'T stay healthy when he is playing hard. His groin is no good, he needs some serious time off. If there is one team that is going to make him play hard, and skate hard, its the Sabres. He might play through it, but he won't be 100% and the Flyers without Forsberg are like the Devils without Brodeur. Good, but not good enough.

So .. yeah. There are my thoughts.

So .. yeah. There are my thoughts.

Calgary's forwards really haven't been that good this year, Iginla isn't playing to himself, and I've gotta say, Andy Mcdonald is probably one of, if not the most underrated player in hockey at least this year. Calgary's gotta make it a tough, bang em series for them to win, and fortunately, they're good at that.

Forsburg is hurt a little bit right now, but if he plays like he can, I think Philly wins the series. If he gets hurt, I agree with you, and Buffalo will take it.

I'm surprised that Gainey did the right thing with Montreal: start Huet. Starting Abeisher would have been stupid, and Huet's been playing awesome lately. That'll make it tougher for Carolina, but I still think Stall and CO take it.

I have to agree with you about the Devils though, thats why I said I wouldn't be surprised if they took it the way they've been playing. Mini-,man Gionta's been playing unbelievable. 48 goals is a great season for him. Brodueur has been playing the way he should, not like the beginning of the season, where it looked he forgot he was supposed to stop the puck, not let it in the net. If Broduer is playing like he is now though, they really have a decent chance to win it all

BTW, here are the odds to win the cup:

Ottawa: 7-2
Detroit: 4-1
Carolina & Dallas: 6-1
NYR: 8-1
Calgary & Philly: 10-1
Buffalo & Colorado: 15-1
Nashville: 18-1
NJ & Tampa: 20-1
Edmonton: 25-1
SJ & Montreal: 30-1
Anaheim: 35-1

For me, the best bets on the way the teams are playing right now would be NJ and SJ. For the odds anyways.

Also, it doesn't matter how tough San Jose play, and how beefy they are, the Preds are SO much faster than them on the ice. The Sharks are getting outskated big time. And Toskala is sucking dick in net.

Kirk Maltby is a cunt. I will never forgive him for breaking Valeri Kamensky's arm right before the playoffs, knowing full well the Avalanche were going to the cup that year. Maltby should've been suspended for a long ass time.

Also, the Sens really turned it up nicely after looking dog shit early on.

San Jose are killing themselves with penalties. Badly. Thornton is spending all his ice time penalty killing.

Haha yeah. I went to Game 6 of that series and it was absolute nuts. In front of the stadium they had an old car painted in Avs colours and different players names and numbers on it. Three hits with a sledgehammer for $1. They made quite a bunch of cash for that. And who can forget the wonderful 'Paaaaaatrrrricccccck' chants during the game. Ahhh...good times. :)

Sabres over Flyers

Devils over Rangers

Dude, I must say, I am VERY impressed with your Devils, as well as Colorado. I was watching the 2nd period in the Devils game, and that 2 man penalty kill was just excellent. Great sticks by Gionta and also Pandofel, I think it was. The post sure helped out too, but that shorthanded goal once the first penalty ended was just a killer for the Rangers.

Plus, they're playing with so much confidence right now (rightly so) that I really wouldn't be surprised anymore if they beat NYR in 4.

Even though Colorado is owning Dallas in the first couple games, I will never count a team like Dallas out of the series.

On the Yahoo NHL page the Flyer headline reads "Offense is Flyers' focus for Game 2." If you look at the score you can't help, but think that maybe defense should have been their focus. PWND

Devils, and more specifically Madden and Rafalski, romped the Rangers. NY looked decent for a while there and played the trap for a good portion of the game (AGAIN). There is still a lot of work to be done to put these guys away. Oh and Brodeur's save at the end (even though the game was all, but over) was beautiful.

If anybody's watching this Montreal/Carolina overtime, it's pretty damn good. Carolina's just killing another penalty and forced Ward to make a game saving save. Almost every slapshot is resulting in a broken stick too.

I'm thinking Stall or Brindamour for the winner.

Ok. After I said Kovalev would win it..I wasn't so sure. Carolina can't give up another penalty. But if Carolina wins, Stall gets it. If Montreal does, then it's Kovalev. That spin-0-rama was tight.

Ouch that sucks. Our team didn't play in a very good division, and they picked me and my buddy up during the middle of the year. They were in 3rd place, but after they picked us up, we won our last 12 regular season games, and only lost once in the playoffs in 3 series'. Two best of three's and a final best of 5. If it's one thing we know, it's hockey. I find the series' to be much better than a 1 and done. It would piss me off greatly if I was on any team that greatly outplayed another team, yet lost to a shitty goal or something like that and be out of the playoffs.

This is what I was going to post if my computer wasn't off at the end of the game:

HOLY SHIT! HOLY SHIT! DETROIT GOES DOWN! DETROIT GOES DOWN!!

I was watching the game with my pops, but was getting really tired. So after the 2nd period, with the score 0-2 I tell him not much will happen so I'm going to bed. Before I go to bed I check my email, check my bank account balances, check the scoreboard. I see that Edmonton had picked up an early goal. Interesting, but still nothings gonna happen, Detroit just wouldn't let that happen. A few minutes later my Dad comes over and shouts up to my room that the game is tied. Holy shit! I figure this is worth staying up for and damn was I right. I couldn't believe the rest of that game! The last goal by hemsky was beautiful!

Now if Anaheim can win game 7 then the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th seeds will all be gone in the West with the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th all moving on!

Alfuh
05-02-2006, 12:39 PM
WOW

Nice fucking comeback, although that tying goal was somewhat suspect. (looked like a high stick)

It was really close, but the stick made contact lower than the highest point of the swing. If that makes sense. (The stick was brough up really high, but it didn't hit the puck until well into its way down) Either way since it wasn't blown down immediately it becomes a moot point. The puck was definitely not kicked in (if it was kicked by anyone it was Lidstrom, silly Swede) and if the ref disallowed that goal there would have been riots!

Nope, unless they change how they do matchups in the playoffs then it's Calgary vs. Edmonton next round if Calgary wins.

After each round, the winning teams are all re-seeded. Therefore, Edmonton will be the lowest seed and Calgary will be the highest left, so they will indeed play.

These are the matchups for the West:

If Calgary wins:

Calgary (3) vs. Edmonton (8)
San Jose (5) vs. Calgary (7)

If Anaheim wins:

San Jose (5) vs. Edmonton (8)
Anaheim (6) vs. Colorado (7)

I still think Ottawa wins their series, they're outplaying Buffalo badly, it's just a matter of time before goals come with them. Miller can't stop Heatley, Alfredson , Spezza and Havlat forever, especially when Buffalo is giving up like 80 shots a game.

Despite his mad dangle, Laracques hurts our team by not understanding things like 'rules.' He really doesn't understand that you can't drive someone's head into the boards from behind. He doesn't even understand what speed limits are either (he has 14 demerits on his license), but he's a cool guy. I saw him at the bar once and he bought everyone drinks. That's his special talent. The Carolina that beat them 3 out of 4 times in the regular season isn't really around and Buffalo really came into their own as the season went on. As for San Jose, I just like watching Thornton and Cheechoo play. It would be funny if they made it to the finals while the Bruins didn't come close to a playoff spot. Yes I'm STILL mad they traded away Thornton. Oh, and I get to go Chugga Chugga Chugga Chugga Chugga Chugga CHEECHOOOOOOO!!!

Just checking in so people know I didn't commit suicide after the Devils lost. All in all it was a great season. There was a time when the Devils were out of a playoff spot and 8th place was looking really good. They ended up winning the division and showing the Rangers who's the boss around these parts. Cheers to a good season.

They really broke up their rhythm so that the Devils' passing just completely blew. They also seemed to really out hustle them to the point where the Devils were almost playing passively. It was sad. I was sad.

Like Rai said, Edmonton is absolutely bananas right now. That game was nuts, especially the 6-on-3 towards the end. The bar I was at was going crazy with 30 seconds left, everyone was jumping around and high-fiving each other. Not only that, but UFC 60 was also playing, so mere moments after we won, we got to see you Matt Hughes pound the shit out of Royce Gracie. UFC 60 + Oilers to the finals + $1 draft = teh awesome.

Not only that, but we went to Whyte Ave (the main bar district in Edmonton) after the game, and it was crazier than ever. I thought after we beat the Sharks in Game 4 it was nuts, but that was nothing. There were easily 20 000 people there, the street was closed so people were walking on it and drinking. People were climbing trees and lamp posts. There was lots of flashing, a girl was getting crowd surfed in a shopping cart ( yeah I know, I had no idea how that happened either) and she was flashing while in the shopping cart.

Also, Whyte Avenue seems to have an infinite number of wooden pallets, because there was about 4 bonfires made in the street, and the main ingredient was wooden pallets. They'd just come out of nowhere and get tossed on a fire. Then the fire department came to back up the 100's of cops on Whyte. They drove through the crowd to get to a fire hydrant and people hopped on the back of it pretending to be firefighters. Then they took their hoses up to the roofs of businesses and put out our fires and hosed us down! I was cold, but happy the Oilers won! :D I'm definitely going to be trying to get tickets for the finals.

Our town has been engulfed in strife since Saturday. Apparently they're blaming the actions of Saturday night on us good-natured Oil fans! Even Calgary's mayor dissed us. He's obviously oblivious to the fact that we pwned the dudes who eliminated his Flames and doesn't realize that we are the superior city. He says Calgary fans didn't mess shit up during their run to the finals, and that it's embarassing that we did.

WRONG!!!

FSU (fucking shit up) = good.

Edmonton > Calgary. :)

But in all actuality, there's quite a lot of controversy here now about this whole thing. There's talk of banning bars on Whyte from selling booze on game nights, which I disagree with as it will only lead to more hooligans showing up plastered out of their minds from drinking at home.

Nobody seems to mention that the police presence was more or less invisible on Saturday night. I saw zero riot police, and the police that were there basically stood at the sides of two intersections (not blocking the street but on the roads leading onto Whyte) in the middle of the strip and then at the very ends of the street. And none of them would venture into the street to stop fires or vandalizers. There was basically zero police presence for a two - three block strip. This compared to previous nights where they had riot cops in full gear, no less than four paddywagons, and basically had one cop every 6 feet along the sides of the road. You could drink in view of the cops that night but if you started being an idiot or vandalizing you'd get tossed into the paddywagon. Whose bright idea was it to have less police presence on the night we made the finals?

What Pro Shoot said. Markannen is far better than Conklin IMO. And I don't think Conklin's nerves or his confidence can recover in 48 hours after that blunder yesterday. Jussi has to step up. He played more than Conklin this year anyways.

As a side note, a large amount of Oilers fans dislike Conklin. The reason? He was supposed to be our #1 goalie this year, they signed him to a nice new deal, and he shows up to training camp way out of shape and something like 20 lbs overweight. They had to send him to the frickin' minors for conditioning IIRC. Oi vey!

Markannen really wasn't the problem. Only about 1 of those goals was really his fault. The rest were the result of total ass defensive breakdowns among the Oilers defencemen and forwards. These guys aren't playing like they've played the last month, they're playing like the Oilers who were in 10th place out of the playoffs in January. :( And not enough shots on net either. No one's shooting, too much stick handling. Everyone's turned into Ales Hemsky (all stick handling and passing, no shooting), except for, oddly enough, Ales Hemsky, who seems like the only Oiler who wants to shoot and not stick-handle.

And finally, I must add, THE JUICE IS LOOSE!!!

And this might be the worst officiated series I've seen so far. This game was pretty good as far as letting the guys play goes, but why are there so many phantom penalties being called? You basically have to fall down in the vicinity of a player from the other team and you're going to get the call.

I'd like to say I was on Whyte partying too, but they have started arresting people now (200 last game, compared to 15 when we beat Anaheim and lit bonfires in the street) and I have an all you can eat lobster dinner tomorrow on Father's Day. I almost add that most (not all) Calgary Flames fans are total jackasses. When Calgary made it to the finals, the large majority of Edmontonians cheered for them because, despite being Calgarians and therefore evil bastards (except you Moopsie ;) ) we decided that it was better to cheer for the Canadian team than a team from Florida where probably 13 people and Hulk Hogan knew the cup was being played. You'd think that Calgary fans would return the favour, but nooooooooo!!! So much hatred comes out of that city towards us, and the Hurricanes might as well be the Hurriflames because most of Cowtown is cheering for them.

Perhaps they are angry that we completely tooled the team that eliminated them? Oh well, at least I can yell at those who have the gall to wear Flames jerseys at University now. :)

Damn that loss hurt. A great series though and a great run by the Oilers, shame the ending didn't work out for them. Now they have to figure out which of their several unrestricted free agents they're going to try and keep here for next year.
