Comparing any other fight on the UFC 60 card to that of Royce Gracie and Matt Hughes is nearly impossible but a few veteran Mixed Martial Arts fighters and hungry rising stars gave the highly anticipated welterweight fight at Staples Center a solid opening on Saturday night.
Brazil striker Ausserio Silva brought a well-reputed record of 30-3 into the Octagon against Brandon Vera, who has established himself as a hard striker even though he has only 6 fights under his belt coming into Saturday night's heavyweight match.
Vera, fighting out of San Diego, received the warmer reception, but the fans became restless as Silva stopped fighting early into the due to an unintentional eye gouge by Vera. The mishap ignited Silva and his tempo, but Vera didn't ease off, blocked some hard punches and recovered from a kick that sent him to the and was able to lure Silva to clinch where he was able to lock up a guillotine and end the fight with 2:10 left in the first round. Silva tapped out and left the Octagon upset as the ecstatic Vera soaked in the glory and cheers from the sellout crowd at Staples.
"KO, submission, I like them all. A lot of people have told me I'm too small for the big dogs, but I'm here," said the gloating Vera.
Season one The Ultimate Fighter middleweight competitor Mike "Quick" Swick entered the Octagon against an experienced Joe "Diesel" Riggs in a anticipated brawl.
A vicious right-kick by Swick to the head of Riggs began the striking and soon after a guillotine, 2:19 into the initial round forced Riggs to tap out and gave a fast-rising Swick his 11th win of his MMA career.
"I thought Joe was going to come out and bang, I didn't think I was going to catch with a submission. The fight went my way," Swick said.
Mixed Martial Arts and submission specialist Jeremy Horn brought his 84-win record into the Octagon against up-and-coming Chael Sonnen and worked the fight to his advantage by going to the ground from the start. After a first round of wrestling and little striking, Horn captured another win via triangle-choke with 1:23 into the second round.
Third fight of the evening brought Matt Wiman, who came into the fight in short notice due to an injury, and Spencer Fisher into a welterweight match. The smaller Wiman put on a show on the ground and controlled the tempo, but once the fight went to the stand up it was evident Fisher was [supreme as he used jabs and right crosses to set up a flying-knee kick with 1:43 into the second round scoring a win.
In the second fight of the evening heavyweights Gabriel Gonzalez of Brazil took on fellow Jiu-Jitsu fighter Fabiano Scherner but the fast paced first round by both sides was too much for Scherner who came out of his corner to begin the second round hesitantly. It was clear that he was not coherent of his guard and the referee stopped the fight less than a minute into the second round giving the victory to Gonzalez.
Melvin Guillard versus Rick Davis, Guillard was the aggressor from the start as he hit Davis with a vicious right cross that put Davis down 1:30 into the first round of the welterweight fight to make quick work of the battle that began UFC 60.
