Portlanders Ed Herman and Josh Haynes each lost Mixed Martial Arts fights in Las Vegas on Saturday on the finale of "The Ultimate Fighter" television show.

The bouts were broadcast on Spike TV and were part of The Ultimate Fighting Championships. Winners in the middleweight and light heavyweight finals were awarded UFC contracts. Despite losing, Herman was awarded a contract as well.

In the middleweight final, Kendall Grove of Hawaii won a controversial decision over Herman, who won the first round easily but tired. The former Columbia River High School wrestler then fought off numerous submission attempts, including a choke as time expired.

But even in defeat, Herman impressed the crowd, and UFC President Dana White awarded him a contract.

In the light heavyweight final, England's Michael Bisping beat Haynes by referee stoppage at 4:14 of the second round. Bisping stunned Haynes with a knee in the first round, and the fight was stopped when the bloodied Haynes could no longer properly defend himself.
