you may remember a month or so ago i posted a thread about TOA, a former K-1 fighter, who killed his uncle via punch to the face while arguing the ownership of a bull. the New Zealand courts found TOA Guilty of manslaughter and he will recieve 2 1/2 years prison time. According to the courts, TOA did not intend to kill his uncle, therefore the light sentance.

A former K1 kickboxing champion has been sentenced to two and a half years imprisonment for the manslaughter of his uncle.

Paul Kingi was found guilty last month at the High Court in Palmerston North.

Rangiwananga Hawea Kingi died in January last year after his nephew punched him in the jaw in a fight over a bull.

The blow propelled him backwards causing him to hit his head on the concrete floor.

The 60-year-old later died in Wellington hospital of head injuries.

In sentencing Justice McKenzie accepted that Kingi was remorseful and had apologised to the victim's family.

However, he told Kingi he had a violent tendency which he needed to address.

yeah no kidding. i wouldnt be trying to mess with someone who has killed by punching somebody square in the face. it is a shame it happened. he really wasnt a bad fighter for the New Zealand and Australia shows. hes just a big former oceana sumo champ, only he has more of the Sentoryu build, probly better. tough tough guy, but obviously has anger problems. they were saying New Zealand jail isnt bad though, and that he may even learn how to actually fight while there. could work out for his career if he is to continue fighting.

Where does the TOA nick come from?

Hasn't it got something to do with New Zealand itself? I think it might mean something in Maori.

its a Maori thing. i thought it was just a nickname, though. his real name is Paul Kingi.

wow, only 2 1/2 yrs!

Two and half years is a short sentence regardless of whether or not he meant it or not or whether he was remorseful or not. Is their laws more lenient to this sort of thing in general or is this just a random case? Considering he is a fighter that normally diminish his chances of getting a smaller sentence

i think its the fact that all he did was punch his uncle once, and that he called authorities himself after it happened. he didnt show that he was intending to kill his uncle and try to get away with it. he made a mistake, called the right people, and is now serviing his 1 1/2 years for a mishap. the real sentance is having to live the rest of his life knowing he socked his uncle over an enraged issue and hit him just a lil too hard.

I'm from New Zealand.

I'm not all too sure about the name TOA,it's definately a Maori word, and it's also a gangs' name on a film 'Once Were Warriors' (best NZ film ever, btw).
I'll try and find out some more shit on the word.

And yes, NZ is pretty light on sentancing in general, but heckyl put it into perspective nicely.

You're definately right about the film, it is amazing and highly recommended.

By the way, 'Toa' translates into 'hard' (I think more so in a tough person kinda way, not like an erect penis, or whatever. But I'm no expert, so it could be).

does not mean penis where on earth do you get that from? TOA means warrior, as asshole has mentioned above read it and learn instead of accusations and rude remarks, he is a good friend and in the time i have known him he aint got no anger problem

I was ringside when Feitosa brutually ko'd him. his ring entrance took about 5 minutes. the fight lasted maybe 40 seconds.

physically assault is absolutely rampant in NZ especially between the Pacific Islanders. I have herad some hilarious and disturbing stories.
