Boxing in the Philippines: Manny Pacquiao Defeats Oscar Larios
By Geno McGahee - July 37, 2006
A Pay Per View card entitled: ?Fire In The Ring,? showcased the popular WBC International Super Featherweight Champion, Manny ?Pacman? Pacquiao, 42-3-2, 33 KO?s, who kept his hopes of bigger fights alive as he pounded out a dominant twelve round decision over Oscar ?Chololo? Larios, 56-5-1, 36 KO?s in Manila, Philippines. This was a huge moment for the Pacman as he headlined a pay per view in front of his hometown fans and it brought its risks. Sometimes fighting in front of your fans can prove to be a distraction and the fact that many considered the former WBC Super Bantamweight Champion, Larios, nothing more than a stepping stone to bigger things. There was some concern that Pacquiao would take this man lightly, leading to a major upset. Although overmatched, Larios was a capable opponent that could have taken advantage of an ill-prepared Pacquiao.
In the first round, it seemed that ?Chololo? was taking a page out of the book of Juan Manuel Marquez and Erik Morales in the first Pacquiao fight, as he controlled the action with his jab and maintained a tight defense. The key to defeating the Pacman for Larios was to keep his composure and to really, fight a perfect fight. In the second, the tide turned, and the Pacman began to control the action, rocking Larios slightly and outside of a few spurts of activity, put Larios in a defensive mode. In the seventh round, Larios would crash to the canvas, courtesy of the ever-improving right hook of the Philippine Superstar. The heart of the challenger was never in question as he got up and continued the bout.
The fight became a Manny Pacquiao show as he continued to seek a knockout, and Larios seemed to be content with just making it to the final bell. He just didn?t have the power or skill to employ the tactics that were so successful for Marquez and Morales. This was a game of survival and the game was almost over as Larios was sent to the canvas again from a barrage of power punches. He was back on his feet, wounded and beaten, but if he was going to lose, it would be by decision and it was. After twelve rounds, Manny Pacquiao was awarded the unanimous decision by scores of: 120-106, 118-108, and 117-110. RSR scored it for the Pacman as well by the score of: 118-108.
This now clears the way for a third encounter with the great Erik Morales, and perhaps an eventual showdown with the pound for pound king, ?Pretty Boy? Floyd Mayweather, JR. There has been a lot of talk about that super fight and perhaps it is a possibility should PBF move down in weight. It would certainly be a huge bout, but the immediate future is a match with Erik Morales. Despite the beating that ?El Terrible? took in his last bout with Manny, and the fact that he has lost three out of his last four outings, he is still a very live underdog when he faces Pacquiao in the rubber match.
