The contender is a new reality show, premiering tonight on NBC (ch. 11). Hosted by Sylvester Stallone and Sugar Ray Leonard.
The show has gotten really good ratings so far and is expected to do as good, or better than TUF..probably because it is on a national major network.
Anyway...thoughts?

It cant be any worse than that show De La Hoya put on last summer. I hope they dont try to capitalize on that suicide of one of their contenders for some ratings boost.

That's a tough situation to be in. Because if you just leave the guy in the show and don't mention his death, it is kinda irresponsible. But if you mention it many say you are trying to capitalize off of his death. Kinda between a rock and a hard spot.
Just gotta try and mention it in a tasteful manner and not over-do it and hope people don't make too bi a stink about it.

They're doing a good job now that they're in the gym already. Some good guys in there, I think they're doing a better job so far of introducing everyone than TUF did off the bat.
Johnny Toetags

Okay - so now they're ripping off TUF's log stunt. Why can't these shows focus their stunts on they're god damn sports. Anyways, West team wons - but Ishe almost cost them, blowing his load early. If Akbar or Akhmed or whatever remembered his code East would've won by a long shot.

So Johnny i hear Ishe won last night over Khaddour. Was it a good bout? I was on my way home from DC and missed the show
It was okay, I though last week`s fight was better. Ahmed basically can bang it out and not much else. He pressured Ishe early and got it some mean body shots but once Ishe figured out all this kid could do is brawl he took it to him. Ahmed acted with little class throughout, Ishe just beat him to the punch consistently. I had it 4 rounds to 1 Ishe Smith.
Best part of the show was the Dodgeball challenge and the West Coast reward where they got macked out with suits and accesories.
Ishe's got no heart though. I mean in Episode 1 I figured he was the real deal. I assumed he was trying to get into Ahmed's head and succeeded but his wimping out turned the tables on him so I was thinking Ahmed would kill him. No dice. Both are probably the weakest guys in there, mentally. Ahmed sparred with Sugar a few rounds and was actually trying to tag him beleive it or not. No class I tells ya. Ray should popped him one.

yeah, from what I saw I had it 3 - 1 - 1 for Ishe.
But this is the same thing they did on Oscar's show and they always tried to make the fight look even. Then they'd announce a run-away winner. It almost has me put off of this show already.

I dont understand why people are hating on Ishe, from what I saw he basically took the advice from Foreman who said it was a individual contest and not a team game overall, because of this Ishe was suspicious about those who wanted him to fight so badly, implying that they wanted him to fight because it is a win-win situation for the rest of the team, if he wins he takes out an East side member, if he loses he is gone from the competition and they know he's strong so its a good thing for them. This was basically summed up in Foremans advice about you get personal after or something like that. Ishe is a clever chap, he knows whats going on, wouldnt say he was ducking, just my opinion.

Well, if you're gonna be a top contender there is. I watched that fight on the undercard of Trinidad-Vargas I believe. Joppy was never that good, the best fighter he ever beat was a half-decent, blown-up jr middle in JC Green (who's best win was over Lonny Beasly himself). Joppy beat THE CRAP out of Reid easily and proved he wasn't going to be a championship calibar fighter.

He beat Miguel.
They were saying something about how now he's a better fighter than before he lost. Leonard said it was like after his first loss to Duran - he came back stronger.
Manfredo looked good in the first round, but in the second and third rounds he looked beat, like he was ready to pack it in, then turned it around and won the 4th and 5th rounds and looked strong doing it. 48 - 47 win.

I just saw this show for the first time. I liked it, and I liked the story line. I have some problems though. First off, what the hell is up with the fight scenes. They look like a Rocky movie, with music, and sound effects. It makes it so cheap and corny. Also, they edit scenes in the fight, and it's really stupid looking. They try to make it seem so exciting, and it just makes the show look even cheaper. The show is way too hollywood.

I'm getting pretty sick of the edited fights. They really need to have the whole fight available on the web or something. And the challenges are beyond ridiculous. And why didn't they vote Johnathan Reid back on the show, those guys from the west made a huge mistake. They got some descent fighters for this show, but I don't think even non-boxing fans are getting into this show. Hopefully it will get better as more guys get eliminated, I'll keep watching despite my reservations.
Shaolin Bushido
03-29-2005, 05:45 PM
Well, there were more voters from the West's team but remember that the East fighters voted too! There are reasons both for and against bringing back each of the eliminated guys and there's very little chance of winning it all without beating worthy opposition.

Hahaha, she is adorable.
Y'know, I wonder if they offered a guy like Hector Camacho Jr. an opportunity to be on the show. I know he's had more than his fair opportunity already what with his famous dad and growing up around pros his whole life but I bet he'd make for good tv. His low self esteem has been his achilles heel though and it would have been emphasized to the point of embarassment with this show closely examining him. He barks alot and pretty loud but his actions more accurately reflect how he really feels.
I can hear his opponents now; "In the ring it's just ME and YOU. No one to help you now."
If he didn't turn it down from lack of confidence or apparent disdain he probably would've been hesitant, fearing that he may not get a fair shot because of Leonard's involvement and his dad beating him up in the twilight of his career, hehehe.
Anyone hear of any guys turning down an oppotunity to appear on the show? Does anyone think any of the guys could beat a Hector Camacho Jr.?

I like the little segments at the end of the shows too; seeing how much those guys put into their fights and how torn up they are is heart wrenching. They've all manned up too, handling it like men.

In the next round I don't think they'll emphasize teams anymore. I don't see how they can. There'll be 8 left and guys will understandably be less likely to give a damn who anyone else wants them to fight. I guess the challenges will feature individual winners.

what's been happening in the show is that both teams have been making secret agreements on who'll fight next, despite the outcome of the challenge. both teams agreed beforehand that anthony would fight this other guy (forgot his name). anthony said he wanted his team to win the challenge so that he could get a psychological edge calling out that guy. when they won, anthony called out brent instead, since brent was the smallest fighter there. the guy he was supposed to fight got pissed since he was training hard and preparing for the fight. anthony's teamates were pissed since they felt he used them. anthony says he's in the competition to win the money for his family. now a lot of his own teamates want to take him down.
i actually respect anthony for choosing his family over his teamates or his reputation. all these guys are playing the game stupid. when you win a challenge, you have the advantage. you should choose the weakest opponent to assure yourself of going to the next level, because you're in this to win the money for your family. picking the tougher opponent might make you look good, but it lessens the chances of securing the prize for your family. the best will eventually fight each other, anyway.
even leonard said that if he were in there, he'd be brutal and ko the guy.
i'm glad someone's actually playing the game to win, not just to look good.
i felt sad for brent, though. the world saw him at the lowest point. i hope he bounces back. :)

I just read Brent's bio on the Contender page. For anyone in the area, his favorite salon is Illusions Hair Salon in Tennessee.
Also, if this thing about knowing who was going to fight who is true, why did Alfonso kick Manfredo's buttbutt in episode one? One would think that Peter would have been ready if it was already predetermined.
And btw, Manfredo beat Bonsante but Gomez beat Manfredo, therefore
Alfonso > Peter > Anthony.

Holy shit, you guys have to check out Alfonso's website. He does a recap of each of the episodes- he even commented on Bonsante:
To Tony: Tony, in a way I want to understand your decision. It is true that you feed your children and it should be your decision who you fight...but like I told you..."It was your attitude that I hated" We in the Final 8 and if we fight...you will not walk over me like you did with Brent. I promise.

i think the secret agreements were made later into the competition. it was alfonso who set the trend of challenging the perceived better opponent. one thing good about challenging the better guy ... there's much less pressure; if you beat him, great ... if you don't, you looked good in taking on the best.
it's like an andre agassi thing. very early in his career, he was beating much higher ranked players easily, but when he fought guys who were supposedly not as good as him, he choked a lot. people handle pressure differently.

I think Anthony did the smart thing by picking the guy he knew he could beat. Yeah, they're separated into teams now, but ultimately this is an individual competition. He was just looking out for #1 and it worked, he is in the final eight. And Alfonso is definitely my favorite right now.

Man, it'd be different if he EARNED that right to pick his opponent without being a lying coward and manipulating his so-called friends. The only reason he won the right was because they trusted and busted their asses for him.
He's a cunt and I doubt he'll be able to exploit anyone else on the entire show. He'll get his and I'm betting, sooner than later. He's 34 and I bet all the guppies are gone by the time the final 8 are determined. yeah, but like i posted on sherdog, he knew who he wanted to fight, and he knew who his teammates wanted him to fight. had he told them his intention, they probably would've thrown the challenge, as they were thinking of doing with sergio, who made it known that he didn't want to fight najai.
coward's a pretty harsh word for someone who boxes for a living, and supports his own family. it's a tough word for someone who chooses his family over his teammates, and even over his reputation. it's easy to do what everyone wants you to do; it's tougher to make the decision that will make you look bad all around the world. think about it. :)

actually, if you've read alfonso's blog, they were really considering throwing the challenge in the sergio episode; in fact, they told the east they would, then decided not to, but were beaten, so it's NOT a stretch at all.
you're entitled to your opinion, and i'm entitled to mine. i think choosing your family over your teammates, and even over your perceived reputation is the more honorable and brave thing to do.
also, they're all in there to win. don't let this team thing fool you.
one other possible reason his "other" opponent was pissed was that anthony was one of the weakest (if not the weakest) guys left in the west, and his opponent would've been the favourite to beat him. now that guy might even have to face tarric (who's been ranked #4 once), or someone easily better than anthony.
anthony doesn't care what his teammates think about him; he cares more for his family. if his kids share your view, maybe they'll disrespect him, but i doubt it. fathers have to make tough decisions. it's easy to call someone out, like isshe did again, as long as it isn't you.

i don't think alfonso would get the job done against anthony; he, too, is a bit on the small side. nerves played a big factor in his win against peter, but anthony looked far from nervous. and although isshe is really talented, i'm not still not sold; his nerves got to him in the early part of his fight with ahmed. i think he can be taken early in a fight.
i could see sergio outpointing him, but the only guy who looks strong enough to really hurt him so far is peter.

The only reason he wasn't nervous because he had been planning for this fight all along knowing that his opponent had been planning for a differnet fighter Obviously this is going to increase his confidence. Well, it was unanimous in favor of Juan.. even though he was pretty sloppy throughout the fight, especially in the first round. I thought Tarick might get his legs back under him, but he never did. And everyone attributed the win to Tarick being so rusty as opposed to Juan actually being any good.
Juan will definitely have the most to prove right now, especially after that fight. At the end of the show they showed the little pow-wow between Sly and the trainers and they all agreed that Juan is pretty lucky that he wasn't fighting the Tarick from two years ago and that he probably isn't as good as they all think he is. That being said, Juan should make it at least to the top 3.

i watched it from the site, then i was able to catch the last 3 rounds during the replay on tv. tarrick looked like he had some good skills, but he gassed pretty fast. i guess the layoff and the age did hurt him a lot. i thought he hurt juan a couple of times, despite being tired.
what's cool, though, is how he took the loss; all class. he didn't berate his opponent, he wasn't down on himself, he was grateful for the opportunity. his age and experience in life probably gives him really good perspective. :)

Even though I'm fairly certain they are "suggesting" to the fighters to not act like a bitch and whine in their postfight goodbyes when they lose, it is still very refreshing to actually view modern fighters carrying themselves with class despite just experiencing the biggest disappointment any of us could feel in losing a shot at a million bucks.
If anyone will fuck up the track record, it will be Ishe if he loses. He ain't quite the confident rock that some of the guys are and his character is kinda shaky too. He will be the one to dispute a decision or blame something else on a loss if it happens at all.
Course ... he's a boxing fool and less likely to have to worry about losing than most.

these past 2 weeks of contender have been the best.
tarrick vs. juan - tarrick was obviously the better boxer, but he didn't have his legs under him; too much ring rust after about 3 years of inactivity. good win for the kid, but tarrick taught him he has a long way to go. juan admitted that his injuries came at the right time, since he knew he wouldn't be able to win the event. he was able to get out without a pro loss, and with some very good experience to boot.
joey vs. jimmy - joey forced jimmy to respect him because of his power and unrelenting attack. he showed tons of heart when he beat him with the hurt leg (but after the latest episode, i'm starting to wonder about the hurt leg ....).
sergio vs isshe - i've actually never been that impressed with isshe; i always thought he fights a bit too cautious at the start. as i've mentioned in another board, the boxer who impressed me most with his skill and style was sergio, as he fought najai. i always felt skillwise, sergio was better than isshe, but sergio can be hurt, and isshe hits harder. i was rooting for sergio, and i knew isshe could hurt him, but i wasn't surprised that he won. sergio is a lot like alfonso, in that when he gets in the ring, he's very calm and comfortable, even when he's on the receiving end. he's very poised under pressure. and like alfonso, he uses his brains a lot in the ring, whether through strategy, psyche-outs, or even just not showing that he was hurt.
i disagree with you, kamehameha, in that i thought sergio looked good against najai. stylewise, najai was tough for him, as he crowds him and forces him to fight inside and negate his reach advantages. but when he was on the ropes against najai, he was able to slip/block/deflect a lot of najai's shots, and was very composed. in the end, it was he who was inviting najai to come in and get him, as he did with isshe.
very versatile, very smart fighter. his weakness is that he can be hurt to the body. but he has a lot of brains and heart.
alfonso vs. ahmed - great fight. i picked ahmed for this, and i was wrong. alfonso showed his composure and heart even when he was hurt. i think what ahmed needs is a better support structure, as well as a smart, experienced trainer to teach him how to use his abilities properly. he looked pretty nice and naive throughout this whole episode, and it also reflected in how he fought.
they always portrayed joey as this nice, simple-minded kid. now we know he actually manipulates, hehehe. impressive that sergio not only picked up on this, but actually already read the book that joey mentioned in conversation. not only that, he knows the book well, having highlighted portions of it.
funny how the contender shows ahmed to be the bad guy and isshe the nice guy, then later, they switch it up. also funny how "teammates" can easily switch on you, as alfonso had with isshe.
like is said early on, this is NOT a team competition, and i'm glad they're finally seeing it that way. they're playing the game smarter now. joey's been playing everybody. jesse confronts isshe, yet chooses sergio to fight him. peter's too nice ... he couldn't pick joey because of the car, nor anthony, because of the injury. now maybe those who were critical of anthony's decision would have a better view of him, seeing how much he'd do to win for his family ... easily more than juan, who had so much less of an injury.
the challenges are better now, as everyone is a target, no "agreed upon" opponents. this can only get better. i can't wait. :)

don't say anything that'll give it away, man. :)
i'm hoping sergio's in the finals.
since alfonso and sergio are in the next round, i'm thinking peter and jesse will advance, unless someone forces them to fight each other. jesse probably wouldn't be able to advance to the finals, as he looks like the weakest of the 4, so the 2 slots are for peter, alfonso, or sergio. that's my guess.
i'm rooting for sergio to win it all.

Joey did a nice job stepping it up against Manfredo. Tough break getting a headbutt and losing a split decision.
But I guess its good that Manfredo got the decision, because Joey wouldn't have able to continue anyway with that cut and a broken rib.

Manfredo has the gas mileage of a Hummer (unfortunately w/o the power). He was tired by rd 3. Joey had me laughing w/ his love taps aka punches, total arm punches w/ almost no hip and leg generation whatsoever. But he had heart though, no question. But how did that quote go from Million $$$ Baby? "Show me a guy w/ nothing but heart and i'll show u someone who's beaten and bloody......" something like that. rang true w/ Joey the Weasel.

Peter was on the local radio station, Star 101.9, this morning.
He was saying that there are 5 boxers left (yes, we know) and if he wins the $1,000,000, he's going to buy a dream house for his wife and child to live in (with another child on the way), and put the rest into his childrens college fund.
there will be additional matches during the finals, similar to the Ultimate Fighters dark matches. but, the fans will get to vote who will be brought back to fight and who will fight who. he said he hopes Jeff gets to come back and fight because he didn't fight on the show
I tried calling in, but it was busy. I wanted to let him know that I've been rooting for him since I first started watching the show and to wish him luck. but, it was too quick of a segment that no calls were taken....Hudson and Scotty B were b!tche$

Sizing hime up, what pile of horse shit did you pull that out of??? Jesse was getting tooled the entire fight. Jesse's corner told him in between each round to hit the uppercut which he didn't do until the 5th. Jesse got lucky..plain and simple.

Kinda hard to tell which is which, truth be told - with the way they were editing. I remember seeing Jesses get rocked around the ring but he never looked worried, so that and his post fight comments tend to make me beleive he felt he was in good position to win.
As far as my comments about Captain Annoying, I stand by them. Using your kids as a crutch tends to irk me, but that's just me. I thought Jesse had a good point about Anthony's mixed signals, i.e. not wanting to spot him the weight BUT saying he'd use him as a punching bag. If that was the case what would the half pound has changed?

Yeah the editing sucks big time, I think for us fight fans it actually does the inverse of what they were trying to do, namely - heighten ze drama.
The lamest part was where the loser raised his kids' hand in victory and walked them around the ring. What the hell is that? Is the show filled with a bunch of Diegos or what?

Shit, i missed yesterday's episode. So Jesse won huh? I say Sergio wins it all. Alfonso is too much of a "dumb" fighter (as in he walks straight in and has almost no defense) and Peter the Hummah will get schooled. Sergio is too slick and technical to be beat by the other fighters. He'll use Alfonso for target practice and dance around Peter. It won't be a walk in the park but I really doubt seeing him lose. Not that I like him the most, as I'd personally like to see Peter win, but as far as fighters go, he's the best one. I'm thinking Sergio vs. Alfonso or Sergio vs. Peter in the final.

Part of being a pro is not losing your head even when you're getting beat. The look on Jesse's face between rounds was that of a man that was losing. Jesse was out boxed, Anthony made a mistake, and Jesse took advantage of it. So yes you are correct it was not a lucky punch.
He was using his kids for motivation not a crutch. You obviously don't have kids so you can't relate. I have two and will tell you my kids are my motivation.
As far as the 1/2 pound they made an agreement. It was not Anthony's fault that Jesse put off losing weight till the last few days. Too fucking bad for him, next time be prepared. I understand what you are saying but an agreement is an agreement.

anthony can blame his corner for the stupidest, stupidest, stupidest advice ever. the minute the corner said to put on more pressure in the final round, when he already had 3 in the bag .... stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid. the advice to win should've been to COAST, keep yourself safe, give away the round, but win the fight. there's NO REASON for the corner to say to put on more pressure. at worst, the corner could've said to fight conservative, as he's won the fight. he's fighting to win, to win $ 1 million, NOT to put on a good show for the crowd, or the contender ratings. stupid, stupid, stupid advice by the corner. in this case, it's really the corner that made the fighter lose a fight he already won in the earlier rounds. stupid.

very very good fight between Peter and Fonzo. Peter seemed to take in-between rounds off in this fight. he was up 29-28 after 3, but he seemed to have gassed and Fonzo took the fight over and took a 48-47 lead after 5. but Peter really turned it on and landed the key shots to give him the slight momentum and time to rain the punches to win out the final 2 rounds.
just sucks that Fonzo who's gone through the TOP fighters of the show to go down in the final 4....if he wasn't, I would have rooted for him

as for next week, tough fight to call. Sergio controls fights while Jesse seems to go for broke. they both deserve to be here and after seeing them tonight sitting by one another and calling the fight and being cool with one another; that's going to kinda hinder them mentally. they just seemed so damn cool with each other like they've been friends their entire life

i was glad that it was peter who fought alfonso, and not sergio, as i wanted sergio to be in the finals, and alfonso is tough as nails. i think jesse is the weakest of the 4, so whoever fights him should beat him, and so maybe sergio will go to the finals. :)
i'm also glad peter beat alfonso, only because peter looks like too nice a guy. i like to see good things happen to kind people like him, so it's good that he gave a much better performance this time.
if jesse beats sergio, i'd root for peter in the finals. i really feel anthony's corner cost him the match. if sergio makes it, then i'll see 2 contenders in the finals who i both want to win. :)
i think sergio has the most skills, but he has no power, and though he can take a punch, he gets hurt in the body. peter lacks stamina and is not a very cerebral fighter, but he can throw some vicious punches. should be a great final. :)

sergio is easily the most skilled and smartest fighter in the competition (maybe tarrick is just as smart, but he had no endurance), but he's weak in the body, and has no power.
peter is not that smart, slower than sergio, but definitely more powerful.
i want both of them to win. i hope they have a great fight, and nobody gets ko'd.
if sergio can't hurt peter, peter should maul sergio into the ropes and just keep attacking the body all night. sergio better hope that his jab and hook are enough to keep peter honest.

to be honest, I was going for Jesse last night. I now that the spoilers have been floating around, but I didn't check them out. To me Jesse's head hasn't been in the game since he fought that black dude. Everytime Jesse got agressive with Sergio he won the exchanges. Also, how many times did Sergio hit Jesse with that lunging jab. For fucks sake LEFT HOOK! It looked like Jesse wanted to lose.
Actually the odds are even for Manfredo/Mora (www.insidefighting.com). This is going to be an interesting fight. If Mora was smart he would use his jab and stay to the outside. Peter likes to bang on the inside and if Mora thought Brinkley hit hard I think he will be quit surprised when Manfredo connects. This fight is too close to call cuz it could easily go either way but I'm pulling for Peter. If I was him I'd pull a Winky on him. Keep the gloves up and always move forward, cut off the ring, block a few punches then counter punch or get on the inside.
