Georges St. Pierre (Pictures) should know by Wednesday evening if his showdown with UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes (Pictures) is still on, the Canadian's manager told Sherdog.com Saturday.
St. Pierre pulled his groin on August 3 and has been limited in training for September 23's title fight, a bout marking his second shot at Hughes' belt.
On August 10 St. Pierre's camp notified the UFC about the injury, which a physiotherapist in Montreal had initially told the powerful 170-pounder he'd need four weeks to fully recover from.
St. Pierre has since flown out to Las Vegas, where he helped corner Jonathan Goulet (Pictures) during Thursday's UFC Fight Night, to work with a specialist that has helped Wayne Gretzky and Tiger Woods.
Patry indicated St. Pierre is 95 percent and has continued to work on his cardio and boxing during the down period. The injury has made grappling difficult, which is problematic considering it is Hughes' strength.
The decision on St. Pierre's participation will come after "Rush" pushes himself hard Wednesday evening. Patry said he believes the fight will happen and St. Pierre will return to Montreal on Sept. 25 with the belt around his waist.
In the event that St. Pierre cannot fight, a member of the champion's camp told Sherdog.com, the UFC has started to work on back-up plans, including a rematch between Hughes and B.J. Penn (Pictures).

Holy shit.
Well get well soon GSP.He's going to need to be 110% to fight Hughes. Its good news though if GSP is hurt maybe a rematch between BJ and Matty being in the works.Id love to see this either way.But would rather GSP bring the back to Canada.

Really, really sucks to hear, it's not often anymore that we see a definitive #1 contender in the UFC; however, to me it sounds like Georges actually should pull out at this point. If he fights with his training having been compromised, he could blow the opportunity he's worked so hard for. Additionally, it deprives the fans of the optimal situation for the bout, and it isn't fair to Hughes either; I'm sure he wants the very best GSP can offer him and wouldn't want any excuses should he beat GSP a second time.

If Rush is injured they should postpone the fight, a rematch with BJ is good but if BJ wins its Penn vs Pierre II with no real build up. Hughes vs Penn II will be tarnished because of thrown together nature of it. Sanchez is too green and won't have much time to prepare for Hughes.

If GSP is 100% this wednsday he has about a month to prepare though, and he has been able to train conditioning and boxing, thats enough, right? *prays to jesus that it is*

i guess that is a weakness of the UFC. few headliners. get Bj penn in there. its a weak card anyway.
frankly i dont know who can save this card.

i dont give a shit about this card apart from hughes v GSP. no outstanding talents. not interested in loiseau, swick is decent, evans is dull, pulver is washed up, the rest are second rate.
apart from the main event UFc 62 is shite as well. they dont even have pictures on the ufc website of some of the fighters scheduled to be there. giving us bonnar v griffin 2 shows how weak it is.

That's not a weakness of the UFC, but the way their cards are structured they do need compelling main events so hopefully Rush can fight.

Few headliners?
No, the problem is to many events, and that they almost only use headliners in compatative fights, so they cant use them all that often.
And that leaves them vunlrable to injuries since that can ruin stuff.
And UFC 63 is not looking to be a weak card, I think its looking really good so far...
And if GSP feels like he can go 100% on wednsday, I think its gonna happend, a whole month to prepare at 100% is pretty good, he has been training most of the stuff anyway...
Lets all just pray he feels good...

Didn't you see the first post?
I'd like to see diego vs. penn.
just to see what would happen. then after that the winner get a shot against the new champ? (GSP) :D
I like Hughes but it's time for GSP to wear that belt.

As a huge GSP fan, even I'll admit he can't beat Hughes unless he's 100%
I don't think he needs that much time to prepare because he already knows what kind of fighter Hughes is.

You speak the truth of what everyone wants (everyone being me and those without weird MMA issues they need to deal with) to see. I just hope he doesn't take it injured and screw his chance. This entire situation is really frosting my flakes and I hope it's blown way out of proportion or is a ruse from GSP's camp (anything at this point, been waiting to see GSP dominate again for a while, especially Hughes).

Didn't you see the first post?
Yeah, I did. And he didn't include a link to the original article. It's a pet peeve of mine. I know he gave Josh Gross credit at the begining in the header, but he never said where the article came from. I mean, he's already stealing their bandwidth by posting the picture here, he might as well post a link at the end so Sherdog.com (http://www.sherdog.com) might get the traffic and ad revenue they deseve for writing and hosting the article. That's all.

That sucks, I would have preferred Hughes was injured for the fight to give an edge to St. Pierre.
Well, now if the fight goes on and Hughes beats GSP again he wont get all the credit he deserves, and thats a fact.

im with other posters, if he's injured dont have him fight. None of that contraversial "oh GSP was injured" excuses from noobs afterwards.
BJ would be optional, but wonder how prepped he is for a 5 round in a short time.

BJ doesn't deserve a shot at the belt. He lost to the #1 contender!! F, BJ!!

I concur. BJ considered his fight against GSP his first title defense. He lost. Back of the line, Doughboy.

I hope St. Pierre recovers in time to fight. I want to see him wreck Hughes. At the same time though, if hes hurt and cannot fight to his full potential I dont see any reason for him to risk it.
