MMAC " The Revolution" Review

The 1st ever Sanctioned MMA event in Washington DC, MMAC’s “ The Revolution” took place on May 12th at the historic DC Armory. This event gave over 2,000 fans a taste of what they can expect for years to come in terms of exciting MMA action in the Nations capital

The evening began with a Welterweight matchup between Local crowd favorite Ron Foster against Kyle Baker. This fight started out with Foster controlling the early part of the action with some sharp leg kicks and aggressive standup. The tide would turn however midway through the round as Baker dropped Foster in a standup exchange and then rained punches on him from a top position until the referee called a stop to the action at 3:41 of round 1 with Baker taking the victory via TKO. The main observation I had from this fight is that before the last standup exchange that eventually cost Foster the fight, he was starting to work Baker over a bit on the ground and using his BJJ expertise to his advantage. However, the Ref for the first fight, a man who was appointed by the DC Commission and whose expertise was in boxing, stood the action up way to quickly as he was not versed in how ground action occurs in MMA.

Lightweights were up in fight number two as Brian Caraway squared off against Minnesotan Sam Mitchell. Mitchell began the proceedings immediately by unleashing a solid right high kick toward Caraway’s head that gave the crowd notice that this would be an action filled bout. Caraway tried to work a takedown to no avail as Mitchell showed impressive takedown defense and a relatively even period on the ground ensued. After the standup, Caraway would take control of the bout and locked in an armbar/triangle choke from a bottom position. Mitchell tried to powerbomb his way out of the submission, but to no avail as Caraway had it locked in tight and he secured the victory via armbar/triangle choke submission at 3:04 of round number 1

Fight number three was a Middleweight contest involving Brazilian Marcelo Brito against Dominican Omar De La Cruz. Brito’s ground work would prove to be more impressive to the judges than De La Cruz’s showy but wild standup in the end as he would eke out a split decision on the judges card.

The Heavyweights would take the stage next as Virginia Beach Virginia native Antwain Britt took on Team Gurgel fighter Patrick Barrentine. This bout was brief, but provided plenty of action. Barrantine took Britt down quickly after the opening bell and worked punches on him in the corner from top position. After a lull in action, the bout was stood up and Britt caught Barrantine with a big overhand right that knocked out the Ohio native. Britt won his professional debut in 1 minute and 12 seconds of round 1 via one punch Knockout. The main observation from this fight that I gathered is that for a man who has had no professional bouts, Antwain Britt can work a microphone like the best UFC heavyweights.

Jiu Jitsu specialists were in the spotlight for the next bout with Brazilian Rodrigo Botti in action against California’s Sam Liera. Round 1 of the bout was filled with plenty of exciting moments as Liera was able to drop Botti twice in standup exchanges and Botti almost had Liera in a Rear Naked Choke at one point during the round but Sam escaped. Sam used up most of his energy though in round 1 and it would show as the fight wore on. Botti controlled the action in round number 2 as he worked good strikes and elbows from the top position throughout the stanza, keeping either top position or side mount throughout whenever Sam would try to get out of it. In round number 3, Botti was working strikes from the full mount position and the referee called the bout midway through the round as he saw an exhausted Liera taking too much punishment. Rodrigo Botti picks up the W via TKO in round number 3

The Lions Dens gym brought a sizeable contingent of fighters to Washington DC, and their first fighter to get action on this evening was Lightweight Ashe Bowman as he took on Matt Sung Lee. My observation from this bout is that for a man who was billed as a Muay Thai Specialist, Lee was fairly competent on the ground. The fight moved to the ground quickly after the opening bell and Lee worked solid body shots from inside of Bowman’s guard. As Bowman scrambled to get up from Lee’s ground assault, Matt locked in a standing guillotine choke against the ropes, which forced Ashe to tap in round 1. When asked about where he might be fighting next after a solid win on the evening, Lee said we might be able to see him on the Bodog fight card that will be coming to Atlantic City this summer. Lee definitely would be a solid addition to such a card in this writer’s opinion.

Heavyweights were back in the ring for the next bout and these two big boys provided one of the more memorable moments of the evening. In round 3 of the battle between Brazil’s Jose Franca and the Lion’s Den fighter Rocky Batastini, Rocky attempted a high kick, got bull rushed by Franca, and literally spilled out of the ring and over the commission table at ringside onto the concrete floor. Rocky was laid out for several minutes on the floor, but after encouragement from his corner man and respected UFC veteran Vernon Tiger White and a crowd chanting “ ROCKY, ROCKY”, he made his way back into the ring to continue his battle with Franca. Unfortunately for Rocky, he would end up on the losing end of a lopsided unanimous decision as Franca dominated him on the ground throughout the bout, landing punishing body strikes throughout to secure the victory.

The Lions Den Camp tried to get off the snide in their next bout, a Flyweight contest featuring their fighter Killa B Niimi against Floridian Chris Manuel. The bout began with Niimi doing his best Tony Ja imitation, with jumping and spinning sidekicks that were more visually inspiring than they actually were effective. Manuel was by far the more well rounded fighter in this bout, as he was in control on the ground and standing, eventually stopping Niimi in round number 3 after a knockdown and GNP exchange that left Killa wanting no more of this battle.

The night of fights had gone well over 3 hours at this point, and the pace of the bouts was definitely sped up beginning with Rafael Bastos vs. Chaylen Rader in a welterweight battle. Rader tried to stand briefly with Rafael and was subsequently dropped for his efforts. Rader ended up in no man’s land very quickly thereafter as Bastos rained blows to the head of Chalyen on the ground as he was curled into a defensive position and the referee called a stop to the bout in round number 1 with “Mantegna” Bastos picking up one in the win column via TKO in round 1.

If you blinked in the next contest, you missed it. The Lions Den got one back in the win column for the evening as Light Heavyweight Herbert Goodman pulled out a guillotine choke victory over his opponent Shane Deeze in 36 seconds of round 1. Deeze got Goodman up for a slam in the initial seconds, but immediately after that, Herbert saw an opening for the submission and took it quickly leading to his triumph.

One of the co main Events of the evening pitted PRIDE and IFL veteran Amir Rahnavardi against former Chute Boxe standout and Kazushi Sakuraba conquerer Antonio “ Nino “ Schembri. Questions surrounded Schembri, as he had not fought in a year and a half and some at ringside wondered how sharp he would be in this return bout. He proved any doubters wrong very quickly as he got Rahnivardi to the ground and locked an armbar on for the submission at around the one-minute mark in round 1.

The main event of this evening’s festivities involved BTT fighter Fabiano Capoani pitted in a Light Heavyweight Matchup against IFL and RITC veteran Homer Moore. This bout was unfortunately stopped in round one as Moore suffered a knee injury after a brief exchange with Capoani on the ground and told referee Mario Yamasaki that he could not continue in the bout. Although it was not a fulfilling way to end the evening for the fans in attendance, Capoani still adds a verbal submission win to his resume.

For fans both new to the sport of MMA and experienced ones alike, “ The Revolution” at the DC Armory provided a night full of competitive action. This show laid the groundwork for what is surely going to be a bright future for Mixed Martial Arts in the Nation’s Capital for years to come.
