Gentlemen, it's not about trying to gain anything--and I wouldn't exactly call it "fake" either. This happens a lot in the sport of boxing. It happens all the time, actually. It's not like these guys think "Hmmm, I should tell people I'm quitting...that way I can play the 'former champ coming out of retirement' angle when I'm negotiating the money situation for my next fight." Retirement announcements like this usually follow a fight in which a boxer is disheartened by losing his title, has gotten beat by someone whom they didn't feel should have taken them (especially if it's their first loss, or first loss in a long, long time), or is in some other way disgusted by something that just happened to them in their last fight.
Here's an example--In 1997, A disgusted WBA champion Ike Quartey announced to the media that he was finished with boxing after learning that his majority decision win in a title defense against Jose Luis Lopez was being changed to a draw due to some ridiculous scoring error that went undetected until later. Ike had suffered a flash knockdown in the 2nd round (a stanza which Quartey otherwise DOMINATED) when his glove grazed the canvas after a Lopez punch, a legit knockdown in the 11th, and lost the 12th round by clinching and holding to keep Lopez from hurting him. The Bazooka CLEARLY won 9 of the 12 rounds, and outlanded Lopez by an enormous margin (Quartey set a compubox record for the most jabs LANDED in a fight--313 jabs found Jose's face). Ike's record was changed to 34-0-1.
We all knew he'd come back (it was almost like the bogus decision made him feel unappreciated)--a champion being jobbed out of his perfect record, though, is just one of the many reasons a boxer might announce that he was done fighting. Come on, was there any surprise that Ricardo and John decided their retirement decisions were a bit hasty?

Tauv there was two straight reasons for the comebacks IMO.
1. Mayorga got off the rape charge
2. ruiz's people must have known about the steroid thing a couple of days ago

Yeah, I'm sure there's a lot of truth to that, Elg.
But don't you think that both of their decisions TO retire in the 1st place were hastily made, and largely a result of each boxer's disheartening loss (even though neither guy was noticeably declining)? Mayorga, tough guy hombre that he is, couldn't deal with being brutalized and stopped by another man.

Ruiz maybe but with Ricardo i am almost positive it was the rape charge. a lot of people thought he was going to jail for sure. I think Mayorga's mindset would not let him go out like that unless there were extenuating cirumstances. hes a warrior of the old school mode

He most definately IS a warrior of the old school mode--he's a guy who prides himself on being a trash-talking tough guy...which is why it seemed to me like he could have handled being out-boxed and losing on points, but not being out-fought and knocked out by another man (like Tito did to him). Don't get me wrong, Elg, I'm sure the rape deal was the main factor in most of his decisions at the time (as I said, there are MANY reasons a boxer might announce his retirement), but I believe that he was truly humiliated by getting his ass kicked and KO'd by Felix. I really doubt that he'll ever regain 100% of his confidence, or be as big of a badass as he used to be.

wasn't the situation something like he got the services of a prostitute, then didn't pay, then she cried rape? i thought i read it like that somewhere.
