Promoter Scott Howard and the Global Combat Alliance returned to Dulles Sportsplex in Sterling, Virginia for another night of MMA action with their second show, Valhalla II. Back in March they brought a night of MMA and kickboxing to northern Virginia and almost a thousand fans were left ready for more. Seven amateur and seven professional matches quickly brought the even larger crowd of 1300 to attention.

Johnny Curtis of One Spirit Martial arts opened the night with a quick submission victory over Mike Sander with a standing guillotine choke. In a very well choreographed event that packed 14 fights into under three hours, the next match began almost immediately. Rich Patishnock took only 45 seconds to get a ref stoppage in his match, and my photographer returned to the our ringside table with his forehead beaded with sweat, and said ?The Adrenaline rush is contagious.?

There is nothing quite like seeing an event live, and particularly a smaller show where the sounds of the combatants echo in the arena. The first of several matches for the local Fightworks team was a close call when talented Kristian Stewart began to pick away at Scott Smith, for most of round one. Smith persevered to the delight of the Fightworks fans in the crowd and won a split decision in a very exciting bou that I?d say was the fight of the night.

The WWE?s ?Lethal Weapon? was in attendance, supporting his Steve Blackman Fighting Systems team in three fight at the event. One spirit Martial Artist, Eric Bailey traded with Blackman?s Boris Rakita for most of the first round, but in round 2 Boris began to find his range and Bailey took the fight to the ground. Bailey was dominant for the rest of the round, ending with back control and close to finding a rear named choke. round 3 was all Rakita who peppered Bailey with punches until the exhausted fighter quit by verbal submission.

Virginia?s rising MMA star Joel Wyatt was cornering for Valley Chute Box fighter, Richie Campbell who had a tough night ahead of him. Richie took two low blows in the first round from his opponent Tom Piccininni, and it looked like the fight might end by DQ after the second one, but Richie persevered. Showing his heart and striking skills was more important to Richie, who came back for a KO victory in round three.

Taylor Dixon of Capital Jiu-Jitsu pleased the crowd with a lightning fast submission win over Coleman Tyson. Then the last of the night?s amateur bouts concluded with Fightwork?s second victory of the night as Leonard Smith quickly got a ref stoppage over Kevin Miller.

The first of seven professional bouts began with Luis Rodrigues of One Spirit Martial Arts finding a glaring hole in the game of Dustin Pague. Luis took mount every round to pound out a unanimous victory over Pague. Next up Fightworks took their first disappointment of the evening as Dave Felton dominated for almost three rounds until Eric Marshman?s corner threw in the towel to stop the valiant fighter from taking any more punishment.

Steve Blackman Fighting System?s Terrill Leach returned to Valhalla, but didn?t find the success he had at the first event. Late replacement, Roger ?the fighting Leprechaun? Carroll sunk a guillotine choke into Leach in the second round for the win. FightWork?s Charles Crenshaw then pleased the local crowd by earning a round one TKO over Ricky Evans. FightWork?s fans barely had time to enjoy the victory before Siyam Yousefi disappointed them. He lost to a headlock/neck crank in one of the more technical ground matches of the night to Doug Hunsucker. Daniel Dove then landed a brutal kick to the forehead of David Hughes leaving a 3 inch gash that made the bloodied fighter verbally submit in the first round.

Finally in the main event, FightWork?s Ric Humphries attempted to defend his Lightweight Title Belt against Hybrid fighter Chris Buckner. Buckner proved to be more of challenge than Hunsacker had been at the first Valhalla show, and he rocked Humphries early in the first round with a Shonie Carter special, spinning back-fist. He remained dominant throughout the first round with takedowns and ground and pound. Humphries weathered the storm and made it to the second stanza, only to succumb to a submission early in the round.

Promoter Scott Howard brought us an exciting night of fights, and with the addition of the cage and the subtraction of the kick-boxing matches, drastically improved his show. The level of competitors has risen, and Northern Virginia?s MMA scene is definitely growing strong.

A big thanks to Peter Flick for handling the photo duties at the event, and to Scott Howard for inviting us to cover the show. As always a big thanks to Rachel for making it all possible.
