Mixed Fighting Championship 4: Review from DCbooks

BloodyKnux.com's DCBooks was apart of the few thousand who were lucky enough to be live at MFC4 last night in Atlantic City,NJ. For those of you who are unfamiliar with MFC(formerly EUPHORIA MFC). They were the company who back in February had the Edwards/Franca 2 close match, plus are without a doubt quickly becoming THE ORGANIZATION on the east coast of the states. MFC's approach has been straight foward since day one with the original USA vs. RUSSIA back in 2004. Bring top talent from around the world to compete in a professional setting. Speaking from experience as I did press photos for MFC3 ringside, Miguel and the rest of MFC bring forth a seriously great production and are head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to bringing quality fighters from all around for fight cards, especially for those of us on the East Coast.

So enough of my thoughts and here is DCBOOKS' review of last nights MFC.

+++++++++++++

Atlantic City's Trump Taj Majal was the host to Mixed Fighting Championship's fourth event this Saturday. A seven fight "tournament" pitting Russian fighters from the Red Devil sport's club and the Russian Legion versus an array of domestic fighter including UFC veterans, Travis "Diesel" Wiuff and Dennis "Superman" Hallman. 10 exciting bouts happened over four hours in an Arena obviously affected by the UFC Tuf media buzz. With a slightly lesser known card, this event appeared to have almost twice the attendance of the poorly attended MFC event in late Feburary.

In the opening bout of the Mixed Fighting Championship's fourth event, Jordan Damon of Washington DC defeated Joey Brown by a submission in the second round using an impressive goundgame which made me question the experience of his supposed Gracie Juijitsu trained opponent.

In the second preliminary bout Jose Rodriguez defeated Lance Everson by submission, and in the final prelim, Chris Ligouri won over James Gabert also by submission.

Then Bruce Buffer had the 14 fighter in the USA versus Russia tournament come out for introductions. Sadly the advertised Fedor Emiliamko appearence did not happen, and I didn't see Amar Suloev as expected, but a corner man(with limited english) who I spoke to did turn out to be his brother.

The first tournament bout had a nice surprise, as unnannounced UFC vet Travis "Diesel" Wiuff was on the card. I spoke to the matchmaker who mentioned how lucky they were that Travis was licensed and could come on board when another fighter didn't show.

Travis fought a tough sometimes plodding battle with Ramazan Hottulaiev. In the first round both fighters threw shots, but neither stood out until they clinched up and Hottuliev dropped Travis with a low knee to the cup. After a couple minutes Travis was ready to continue, and proceed to have his mouthpiece sent flying out of his mouth by a solid blow from the Russian.

After weathering the first round, Wiuff and Hottulaiev traded shots thorughout the second round with Wiuff landing short jabs, and the Russian boxing his opponent?s ears with some petty solid roundhouses. With about a minute to go Travis took the Russian down to the mat, but not much happened there before the second bell.

With the final round, they fighters circled exchanging jabs for roundhouses, but niether trying to finish the fight. Then Wiuff exploded with a flurry, throwing a dozen blows in a couple seconds, but none of them seem to land or really faze the Russian. As the last minute of the last round arrived Wiuff played the crowd, holding his hands out and pumping them to the ceiling. The crowd chanted USA USA to the beat as he circled and went at the obviously exhausted Russian with 2 short flurries that really had little effect on the Russian, and were probably more for the Judges.

They responded giving Wiuff a unanimous decision based on the crowd and the low-blow more than any attempt to actually defeat his opponent.
The next match had Bristol Marunde getting a very quick submission victory over Alexei Vezelezorov.

Next Musail Allaudinov faced Kieth Wisniewski. Allaudinov seemed the older more seaoned fighter, and I quickly felt sorry for the boy from Indiana. The Russian took the kid to the mat and reigned down blows on the leaner taller American from the guard eliminating his height and reach advantage. Then the action returned to their feet, and the seemingly outmatched American landed some long shots from a distance and finally found his range. The second round stayed on their feet with the kid coming back to chants of ?USA! USA!?, landing shots and pummeling the Russian for the win.

Sergei Golyaev was seriously out matched by Hermes Franca teamate Kurt Pellegrino who quickly dominated his opponent and toyed with him on the ground for a couple of minutes before getting an easy submision vicory. No doubting Kurt's gound skills.

Much like MFC 3 this next bout was the most anticipated of the night by the local crowd. Philidelphia Fight Factory star, Eddie Alvarez, had a bigger ovation coming out to the ring than all the other fighters combined. Philly really represented for their rising star of MMA.
Eddie came out swinging, looking to continue his undefeated run with another knockout, but the Russian Danila Vesolov had a good chin, taking numerous shots, but not succumbing to the flurries. In a surprise move, Alvarez shot in and got a solid takedown followed by more blows from Vesolov?s guard. Then with another surprise that showed some promise for Alvarez being more than a Baroni style puncher, he spun around for an armbar and finished the fight with his first submission victory.

While the quality of Alvarez's opponents thus far has been questionable, his last two opponents have a lot of ring experience if not winning records. In both MFC 3 versus Seichi Ikemoto and this match versus Veselov, Alvarez appeared unstoppable, dominating his experienced opponents with very little difficulty. I'd really like to see him face off against a marquee opponent to prove how good this guy really is. From what I've seen, he could be a real force in 170lb division, and is definitely a fighter to watch. Hopefully Dana White has his name in the pot for TUF 2!

With the next bout the tide changed against the dominant Americans. At the top of the card we began to hit the real meat of the Red Devil sport's club. Ansar Chalangov came into face UFC vet, Dennis "Superman" Hallman.

Hallman showed his much touted submission skills, beginning the round by locking in a solid armbar on the standing Russian. The Russian lifted and slammed Hallman to the mat twice but could not free his arm. Finally crouching down to the mat, Chalangov kept his wits, and slowly slipped the hold. Hallman spun and attempted an ankle lock and finally got his opponents back. With the hooks locked in and landing blows to the back of his opponents head, Hallman tried to get the rear naked choke. Chalangov weathered the storm and frustrated the choke, until the ref stood the fighters up. Now it was the Russian's turn, and had some Krptonite in his gloves. Landing some serious shots to Hallman's head against the ropes, Ansar finished the round landing unanswered blows to a stunned Hallman who was literally saved by the bell. Not for long though, as the second round continued the beating as Hallman appeared to not have recovered during the break, and barely tried a ankle lock while being punished with blows before the ref stopped the fight.

Finally the last match of the night arrived. Originally booked as Miletich fighter, Ben Rothwell, versus Red Devil, Ibragim Magomedov, the fight had changed to Magomedov versus Dan Chritainson who beat Rothwell at the last MFC, and finally Magomedov versus Brian Olsen.

Olsen had stepped up after Dan Christianson failed to show up at the airport for the fight! I spoke to the matchmaker, and he said the Native American's coach had sent Dan "the Punisher" Christianson to Vegas to try out for TUF 2! I was quite let down by the news, as after seeing the 6'10 fighter's war with Ben Rothwell last MFC, I thought his size and toughness would be a real challenge for the highly touted Red Devil, who was coming off 2 3 fight tournament victories.

Brian Olsen sadly proved to be little challenge. Olsen began the fight shooting in for the takedown, but was frustrated by Magomedov's sprawl, and quickly found himself on his back. Magomedov then rose from his loose guard and dropped on giant bomb from above his head down to Olsens chin on the floor. As the Russian rose to victory Olsen lay eerily still. Thankfully he regained consciousness and after about 5 minutes was seen sitting on the stool with blood running down his neck. Magomedov exited the ring to a throng of Russian fans, and the night was over.

MMA announcer extraordinaire Bruce Buffer, announced the next MFC will be the USA versus Japan in October, and hopefully I'll be there to cover it.

Thanks again to Jim for a great write up and insight to the latest MFC. Also bringing forth many names that have been spoken about that maybe included in the upcoming "TUF2" show.

Pictures of the event to follow.
