Canadian MMA fans pack the house in Gatineau Quebec for Freedom Fight!

Gatineau, Quebec, Jan 26 2008--Freedom Fight was back last night as Mixed Martial Arts fans piled into the Robert Guertin Arena in Quebec, nearly filling it to capacity as eighteen fighters took to the stage to battle it out in Freedom Fights first showing in 2008. The crowd was finding it impossible to stay in their seats as seven of the eighteen fighters were all local hero’s from the Ottawa Area. The event itself was a highlight reel of knockouts and submissions as all but one fight never left the second round. The only fight to go the distance was far from being a disappointment, as it was easily the fight of the night.

Event play by play and results-

Clint Martin (Team O.A.M.A- Ottawa, Ontario Canada) vs. Dimitri Waardenburg (Team Speedy Gym- Belgium)

Rd 1:

The first fight of the night between Martin (Black Trunks) and Waardenburg (White Trunks) was short lived. The brutal striking skills of Waardenburg were quickly eluded by home town fighter Clint Martin, who immediately took the fight to the ground where he secured side control. From there Martin was able to totally dominate Waardenburg, and quickly anchored in an arm bar at just 0:57 into the first round.

Michel Aubin (Team Sudbury MMA- Sudbury, Ontario Canada) vs. Andre “Major” Desrociers ( Team FIT MMA- Ottawa, Ontario Canada)

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g178/dcbooks/FreedomFight/Aubinvsdesrociers.jpg

Rd 1:

Aubin (Black trunks) quickly opened up the round by rushing in on “Major” (Red trunks) and scoring a quick take down. From there Aubin started slamming “Major” with elbows to the face, and knees to the body. Aubin then went to transition for an armbar, but during the scramble “Major” was able to get back to his feet, where he quickly out struck Aubin and landed a solid hook to knock out him out at 2:13 into the first round.

Todd Wood ( Freestyle MMA- London Ontario Canada) vs Ian “Junkyard” Dawe (Team FIT MMA- Ottawa Ontario Canada)

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g178/dcbooks/FreedomFight/woodvsdawe.jpg
Rd 1:

Dawe (Black Trunks) opened up round 1 with a quick takedown on Wood (Red trunks). From side control Dawe started landing elbows to the head and face of Wood. Wood was able to sweep Dawe and get back to his feet where he threw a quick combination that saw Dawe now bleeding from his mouth and nose. Wood then scored a takedown for himself and from half guard landed more blows. Wood went for a kimura attempt which looked pretty tight. Dawe however, would have nothing of it. After a quick scramble Dawe sweeps and gains side control and throws elbows into Wood’s face until interupted by the referee, who had to restart the action when the fighters both went under the ropes. Once standing Dawe lands a solid hook that catches Wood on the button and knocks him out cold late into the first round.

Rob Tracy (Team Dog House MMA- Pembrook Ontario Canada) vs. Eric Muir (Team Fronco Behring- Oshawa Ontario Canada)
Rd 1:
Tracy (Camo trunks) was able to better Muir (White and brown trunks) early with the stand up, scoring multiple blows to the face and body before Muir is finally able to secure a takedown. With limited action the fight is stood back up again by the referee, and Muir is able to get the take down again. While having Muir in his guard, Tracy throws up a triangle attempt which looks pretty tights. Muir, refusing to tap, lifts up Tracy and slams him into the mat, and escapes to gain side control. Tracy is then deducted a point for purposely escaping from the ropes.

VG Scores this round 9-9 (due to the point deduction)

Rd 2:

A solid right hook from Muir drops Tracy to the mat, where Tracy quickly pulls guard. Muir accidentally hits Tracy multiple times in the back of the head, and the ref stops the action and stands them up. Muir secures yet another take down and easily slides from half guard, to side control and drops “punches in bunches”, and “flows of bows” to Tracy’s head. Tracy manages to slide under the ropes and the fight is stood up again. Tracy immediately walks back to his corner and tells the referee he no longer wants to fight. The fight is stopped at 2:37 into the second round as Tracy is unable to continue.

After a brief intermission, Freedom Fight Owner Pete Rodley stepped into the ring and introduced his newest addition to Freedom Fight. Famous Canadian rock star and T.V celebrity- Robin Black, has been added to the next events card. The event will be once again happening at the Robert Guertin Arena some time in 2008. Black, who fights at 135lbs, was announced to be fighting Chris Myra.

Joel “Demolition man” Davis (Freestyle MMA-Barrie Ontario Canada) vs. Markhaile “Showtime” Wedderburn (Team Iron Tiger- Toronto Ontario Canada)

Rd 1:

After refusing to touch gloves with Davis (Blue and yellow trunks) “Showtime” ( Camo and gold trim trunks) scores a solid double leg and transitions to mount. After a brief scramble Davis manages to get back to his feet, only to fall into guard, where Showtime passes with ease to mount once again. Not a whole lot of action as Davis holds on for dear life, and Showtime looks somewhat lost with what to do next. Davis gives up his back after a few short elbows and Showtime goes for the rear naked choke. Davis is able to spin out and get back to standing, where Showtime again gets a takedown, and again easily moves into mount. The fight is stood up as the fighters go under the ropes, and round 1 ends.

VG scores round 1: 10-9 Showtime

Rd 2:

Showtime once again quickly gets the takedown and again obtains full mount after a quick scramble. From the top Showtime drops a flurry of punches and gets the TKO early in the second round.

Steve Hazelton ( Dog House MMA- Pembrook Ontario Canada) vs. Jason Bissonnette (FIT MMA- Ottawa Ontario Canada)

Rd 1;

Hazelton (Black Trunks) tries to out muscle Bissonnette (Black Board shorts) but to no avail. Neither fighter pushes much action as they both try for better positioning from the clinch in the corners of the ring. After the restless crowd starts to “boo” the fighters Bissonnette gets a second wind, scores a hip toss and gains side control where he then throws elbows and punches until the referee stops the fight late in the first round.

Justin Doyon (Team Shredder- Sudbury Ontario Canada) vs. Mark “Boots” Holst (OAMA- Ottawa Ontario Canada)

Rd 1:

Holst (Black Trunks) is able to better the stand up early and quickly clinches Doyon (Blue and red trunks). From the clinch Holst throws a barrage of vicious knees, to which Doyon can find no answer. As blood pours from Doyons face the referee stops the fight to have Doyon’s cut checked by the doctor. The fight is soon after called off as the cut is way to big and deep. Holst is awarded the TKO victory early in the first round.

Co-Main event.

Dan “Big House” Grandmaison (Team Shredder- Sudbury Ontario Canada) vs. Stephan Lemarch (FIT MMA- Ottawa Ontario Canada)

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g178/dcbooks/FreedomFight/GrandmaisonVLamarch.jpg

Rd 1:

Lemarch (Black trunks) relentlessly tries for the double leg, but Grandmasion (Black and white trunks) sprawl is off the chain. Quickly scrambling from another failed double leg from Lemarch, Grandmasion is able to find himself in mount and works for an armbar, which doesn’t work. Grandmaison then goes for a triangle, from which Lemarch throws a big powerbomb slam. Grandmaison’s ground game is too much for Lemarch to handle as Lemarch gets stuck in half guard. Grandmaison sweeps and ends up in north south before the round comes to an end.

VG scores this round 10-9 Grandmasion.

RD 2:

After an action packed first round the two fighters are still going all out as takedowns, scrambles, armbar attemps and rear naked choke attempts all happen in the first 1:30 of round 2. Grandmaison is able to get Lemarchs back then goes for the rear naked. Lemarch spins out and finds himself locked in a triangle, manages to escape that, then finds himself stuck in a tight armbar from Grandmaison that ends the fight at 4:29 in the second round.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g178/dcbooks/FreedomFight/Brown-vs-Hicks.jpg

RD 1.

Brown, from side control is able to open up Hicks with a series of furious elbows. The fight is stopped by the ref to get the cut checked. After getting clearance to continue the stand up is dominated by Brown till the round ends.

VG scores this round 10-9 Brown.

RD 2

Once again Farmer Dominates the stand up as he is able to pick apart Hicks with jabs and hooks. Hicks throws a brief fury, hitting Brown flush with each shot. Farmer returns with a flurry of his own, and out muscles Hicks into the corner and scores a take down. The fight gets back to the feet and the round is over.

VG scores this round 10-9 Brown.

RD 3

Hicks comes out firing hard and landing solid shots hurting Brown. Brown and Hicks clinch and Brown again muscles Hicks into the corner. Freedom Fight 2008 was a fantastic show from start to finish. Tickets to no matter where your seat was, easily worth every penny.
