ShoXC tonight provided another excellent round-up of some future MMA stars
ShoXC has been made as a building ground for the future of EXC as a way to keep a steady stream of contenders coming into their organizations. Tonight's card would hope to do just that, with several quality prospects that could become big names in the near future.
Beginning the night for Showtime's ShoXC card were two constantly overlooked, yet highly skilled and able FW competitors in Doug Evans and quality late-replacement Bao Quach. These two were ready to make a name in Showtime's organization with a big win here and that intensity showed once the opening bell rang. In the classic 'grappler vs striker' mold, Quach tried keeping Evans at a distance, while Evans tried to use his wrestling to secure control. Quach utilized effective wrestling of his own however with a nice sprawl in combination with a solid jab and leg kicks to quickly frustrate Evans into getting reckless. From there it was only a matter of time before Bao knocked him out early in the first round.
In the next bout of the night, Matt Lucas and Giva Santana came in as solid MW prospects, both with undefeated records and the talent which that implies. Lucas used his wrestling to put Santana to the mat, but the man who has earned the nickname of 'The Arm Collector' due to his armbar prowess certainly wasn't so much as uncomfortable on his back. Lucas was able to control the fight standing and take him down at will yet again after a stand-up; however, Lucas was not able to continue his control once it hit the matt the second time, as Giva was able to live up to his nickname and smoothly executed an armbar from his guard to win the fight 11 seconds before the first round ended.
Shayna Baszler came out next, as the favorite in her bout, against Keiko 'Tama*Chan' Tamai in the card's only female MMA bout. Tamai came out as aggressive as her outfit was colorful, flying out with a superman punch that took Shayna by surprise. After that initial exchange Baszler caught her out of position and was able to suplex her to the ground and rain down punishment and submission attempts that would make her trainer, Josh Barnett, jealous. After a few moments of domination, Shayna Baszler was finally able to finish off her durable opponent with a twister in a very exciting bout.
The next contenders for ShoXC were Fabricio Camoes and Joe Camacho in the 160lb division. Camacho tried to utilize his speed while Camoes used his power and size, providing an interesting contrast of effective styles. Fabricio's positioning and power soon proved too much for Camoes, despite Camacho's activity and defense from bottom. After an early takedown, Camoes steadily punished Camacho against the cage for a referee stoppage once again inside of the first round.
The final fight and main event of the evening included two more excellent prospects at LHW. Po'ai Suganuma and Jared Hamman would keep the streak of first round finishes for this event alive, as they came out ready to swing. It ended in mere seconds as Jared got up from the canvas and could be seen asking officials ''what happened'' shortly after. The answer was an overhand right and flying knee from Suganuma that he simply wasn't prepared for, that sent him down and made the referee concerned for his safety with the dramatic way he fell. The stoppage was questionable and the crowd let it be known, but what couldn't be questioned was the power in Suganuma's strikes that makes him an asset to any organization.
Every fight ended by the first round in dramatic fashion. While several of the contenders fell short, those who left victorious all have highlight reel material waiting for them with their impressive wins earned tonight. To put it simply, if tonight is any indication, EXC has a bright future waiting in the number and ability of their contenders.
