If Jens has anything of the old left, he'll wreck Champ McDodger a new one. Sprawl sprawl punchypunch.
I hope someone has sodomized Filho in rehab and upon grappling Sonnen the memories come storming back, and he'll start to cry in an uncontrolable fashion, prompting Sonnen to yell in pain and then argue on not tapping. Couldn't care less. Fuck the drugie.
Brown vs. Faber is another Faber fight that will be totally tits.

Not while suspended.
http://mmamania.com/2008/07/08/alexandre-pequeno-nogueira-steroids-tests-comes-back-positive/
Recent high profile World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) featherweight acquisition, Alexandre “Pequeno” Nogueira (13-5-2), has been popped for having an illegal anabolic steroid (Boldenone) in his system following his technical knockout loss to Jose Aldo on June 1.
The California State Athletic Commission yesterday issued an announcement that the longtime Shooto 143-pound champion was fined $2,500 and will be suspended for 12 months for the positive test.
Nogueira had both his “A” and “B” samples independently verified at separate laboratories.
It’s certainly another setback for the Brazilian since his arrival stateside –- he was being discussed as a possible threat to Urijah Faber’s 145-pound crown. And despite the loss in his debut for the promotion, there was speculation that he would get to prove himself later on this year in a fight against Jens Pulver.
Those plans now appear to be on hold for quite some time.

I remember watching Brown fight not too long ago against Edwards. The guy has got pretty good wrestling so Faber will have to prepare himself for that. He's also got a win over Curran which is pretty impressive.
Pulver / Garcia should be a pretty good fight as well. And Filho / Sonnen should be a very competitive rematch. I think Sonnen has the tools to beat him but taking a guy to the ground like Filho wasn't he smartest strategy in their first fight.

Garcia was quickly becoming one of my favorite fighters since he put on such brave performances against Huerta and Miller, but I started seeing him as a legitimate talent when he took out Takaya and I'm hoping he does just as well against Jens. Not to say that I don't like Jens, only that it seems his ship has sailed and Garcia is a young dude with a very promising future. If Garcia sets the pace this will be fireworks from beginning to end.
Brown's win over Curran was impressive and he's certainly has quite the impressive resume having faced Imanari, Lauzon, Edwards, Genki, and some other guys that I can't remember off the top of my head (they were top-level though) and I think he's got as good a shot at Faber as anyone else at the moment, but I just don't see it happening. Faber's been incredibly consistent by always performing at 120% and I think his pace and well-rounded game will end up giving Brown fits for a decision.
Filho and Sonnen is interesting because Paulo has yet to perform to his usual standards in the States and Sonnen has got to realize where he went wrong in the first fight and he should certainly have figured out that takedowns weren't a wise idea. Filho's drug problems have also got to be factored in when looking at the first fight and it will be interesting to see exactly how the dependency affected him in his last few bouts. I'm picking Filho just because I'm still confident that a 100% Filho can be a world-beater at 185 but if Sonnen keeps it standing and takes a decision it wouldn't surprise me either.
McCollough/Cerrone should be awesome and I can't wait to see it. I've been hearing about "Cowboy" Cerrone for awhile and after reading a few magazine articles about him I was anxious to see how he'd perform. Well, everytime I've seen him he's looked great and 9 submissions (the 1 NC was a submission win before he pissed hot for diuretics) in a row is seriously impressive stuff, moreso when you consider that he's originally a Muay Thai fighter. Guys don't want to fuck with him on the feet, so they take him down and it ends up just as badly for them, and I love a fighter like that. He's definitely not going to have to worry about that with McCollough and that's why I like this fight and it's second only to Pulver/Garcia in terms of my anticipation. I'm going with Cerrone by submission but when bangers start trading shots, anything can happen.

Filho, even depressed, will defeat Sonnen. Horn submitted him twice and busted him open once, I'm pretty sure Filho can at least decision him.

Noone's really questioning that he can defeat him, but look at the last fight and think about Filho being in rehab since then while Sonnen's been training specifically (I'd hope at least) to fight him from that moment on (rematch was being rumored from the moment it was called practically and they've both been on hold since) and you've got potential upset in the making.
MMANut
07-30-2008, 05:14 AM
Not to mention the fact that Sonnen's excellent wrestling is often overlooked and underrated because of his less impressive overall game. Paulo having all of his takedowns stuffed wasn't a fluke or an anomaly and even with a healthy Filho, there's the chance that it will happen again and that's where things get interesting. If Filho can't take him down and Sonnen plays it smart and peppers him with strikes as he did in their first fight, he can very well take it via stoppage or decision, or Filho might connect with a massive punch as he did against Doerksen. This is a much more interesting fight than people are letting on.

I was kind of hoping Aldo would draw Fabiano (or even Grispi, because that would be all kinds of awesome as well), since Adams isn't averse to that kind of matchmaking, but this works I guess. Actually, it doesn't, because Aldo just finished turning Pequeno into feijoada, but whatever. Aldo is the future at 145.

World Extreme Cagefighting's Sept. 10 "WEC 36: Faber vs. Brown" event has been rescheuled for Nov. 5 due to Hurricane Ike, which is expected to hit Florida early next week.
WEC officials notified the event's competitors and their management teams Friday night during a conference call, fighters' representatives told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).
"WEC 36: Faber vs. Brown," is set to take place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., which is located in the southern portion of the state. WEC officials said the venue is already being prepared as an emergy shelter for area residents.
In addition to the night's main event of WEC featherweight champ Urijah Faber vs. Mike Brown, undefeated middleweight title-holder Paulo Filho puts his belt on the line against Chael Sonnen at the event.
WEC officials apparently made the decision now -- rather than closer to the event -- to assure fans and fighters weren't stranded in Florida if the hurricane hits with full force.
The latest projections have Ike -- a Catgeory 4 hurricane that at least temporarily weakened to a Category 3 on Friday evening -- hitting the Southern tip of Florida on Tuesday evening and ravaging the southern half of the state by Wednesday night.
In anticipation of Ike's early-week arrival, emergency-management officials have already initiated mandatory evacuations for the 80,000 residents of the Florida Keys, a 110-mile stretch of coral islands located south of Florida's mainland.

Yeah......you went to the StReEt CeRtiFiEd show and didn't even let me know you were there.............wack.
Anyway.......I'm hoping that this long delay foe WEC doesn't change the card. =/
sorry...i didn't think i was a big enough part of this board for a meet-and-greet session. :o
and street certified is exactly the same type of show that this one is shaping up to be: terrible main event featuring kimbo/pre-historic, over-the-hill, ufc washout, but featuring a solid main card and undercard.
like i said, plenty of good fights on there, so far, imo: petruzelli/rosa (i go to ucf currently, so i have to root for seth), edson/aina (this one needs no explanation), daley/shields, rua/radach, and crafton wallace is also on the prelims. i really think he got the short end of the stick in the ufc, facing off against kampmann and marquardt, and taking the second fight on short notice. they should've at least brought him back for a third go round...
either way, i expect plenty of good ko's and subs from this card. should be fun.
in regards to the wec card, hopefully this means that with them being spaced out a bit more, i have time to procure some excess funding to ensure my attendance. that would be tits.

To clarify, that's an injury to Thiago, not to Lyoto.

why even defend the titles?
So that when Stann goes to the UFC it's as the reigning WEC champ. Makes them more marketable and is just smart business, plus it boosts that final fight's relevance on the WEC card where it takes place.

Days before their title match, Mother Nature decided to make these two gladiators wait two more months. Now, the question is – Who will benefit from the extra eight weeks of training?
“I was 100 percent ready to go,” Brown said. “It was kind of rough on me. I took a week off to relax, just like I would’ve if I fought.”
But Brown remains confident. To counteract Faber’s wrestling ability, the Portland, Maine native who now trains with American Top Team in Florida, has been wrestling with Cuban Olympic Bronze Medalist Alexis Vila. Brown admits that it might be “easier to stand and trade” with the champ, but he is not focused on one aspect of the fight game.
“I just want the win,” he added. “I don’t care how it comes. I just want to be the No. 1 guy…this is the biggest fight of my life.”
As far as the 145-pound champion is concerned, the time off couldn’t have come at a better time.
“I think I definitely benefited from the break,” Faber said. “It gave me a chance to heal up a bit. I was 90 percent and now I’m ready to go.”
Just thought there was one title on the line on the 5th? Undefeated Brazilian fighter and WEC Middleweight champion Paulo Filho (16-0) meets Oregon’s Chael Sonnen (22-9-1) in a rematch of their exciting 2007 battle in which the champ earned a controversial submission victory.
And in what is sure to be an instant classic, former UFC® lightweight champion Jens Pulver (22-9-1) meets the always-exciting Texas product Leonard Garcia (15-3) in a 145-pound matchup. True MMA fans remember Faber and Pulver’s June 1 classic which saw “The California Kid”
retain his gold, but they also can’t forget Garcia’s three-round epic with Roger Huerta at UFC 69 in April 2007; a fight so memorable that it was immortalized on the May 2007 front cover of Sports Illustrated.
.
In middleweight action, three-time national wrestling champion and Oklahoma State graduate Jake Rosholt (4-0) steps into the cage against Hawaii’s Nissen Osterneck (5-0).
In what might be the stand-up fight of the night, former WEC Lightweight champion “Razor” Rob McCullough (16-4) goes toe-to-toe with Donald “The Cowboy” Cerrone (8-0, 1 NC) in a lightweight fight. McCullough is a menace on his feet, but the former champ shouldn’t underestimate Cerrone’s ground game – “The Cowboy” has won both of his WEC fights by submission.
Miami light heavyweight David Avellan (2-0) will have his hands full against two-time All-American and former Arizona State wrestler Aaron Simpson (3-0), who makes his WEC debut.
Added to this already stacked fight card is a featherweight matchup between decorated Brazilian jiu-jitsu star Jose Aldo (10-1) and Ocala, Florida’s Jonathan Brookins (8-2), winner of four of his last five fights. Also, former The Ultimate Fighter® contestant Alex Schoenauer (14-9) makes his WEC debut against Arizona’s Steve Steinbeiss (4-1) in a light heavyweight matchup. With two explosive fighters staring across the cage at one another, there’s a good chance the lightweight bout between Danny Castillo (5-1) and Ed “9mm” Ratcliff (6-1) doesn’t go to a decision. Off the heels of a loss in what some experts are calling the fight of the year against WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres, Yoshiro Maeda (23-5-2) walks back into the cage against grappling world champion and Brazil native Rani Yahya (12-4).
So to recap fight card from yesterdays article:
Faber/Brown
Filho/Sonnen
Pulver/Garcia
Osterneck/Rosholt
McCullough/Cerrone
Aldo/Brookins
Schoenauer/Steinbeiss
Ratcliff/Castillo
Avellan/Simpson
Yahya/Maeda

I hope Filho turns up right. While I am not a fan of his style or the guy in general, he has huge talent. Its a bit like Arona. He may be boring but he has the ability to fight and beat the very best. I jus hope outside issues and influences don't ruin his career.

For WEC featherweight contender Mike Brown November 5th can’t come soon enough.
A professional for almost eight years, the American Top Team fighter has flown under the radar with many fight fans having competed on a variety of small shows, from his early beginnings in Massachusetts with the local Mass Destruction promotion to St. Petersburg, Russia with the ill-fated Bodog Fight experiment. That has not, however, precluded him from picking up quality wins over the likes of Mark Hominick, Taiyo Nakahara, and Yves Edwards.
It was arguably the victory over Edwards – now a team-mate of Brown’s at ATT – in 2006 that brought the native of Portland, Maine to the attention of the WEC who signed him earlier this year to compete in their burgeoning featherweight division. A decision win over the highly-regarded Jeff Curran soon followed and Brown had quickly but quietly earned himself a shot at the 145 pound title.
That shot comes on – you guessed it – November 5th at WEC 36 in Hollywood, Florida. It will be the day Brown hopes to realize his career-long dream of winning a world title and, in so doing, finally earn his long-overdue moment in the sun.
“It would be the biggest win of my career,” Brown says candidly. “I think it would put me in the number one spot. I would have the belt and I think I would be considered the number one guy, and that’s every fighter’s goal, every fighter’s dream.”
Standing in his way, however, will be the imposing figure of champion Uriah Faber. With an outstanding record of 21-1, the Californian is widely regarded as the world’s best fighter at 145 pounds.
But the 33-year-old Brown is unfazed by Faber’s credentials and believes he has the tools to overcome one of the sport’s most dominant fighters.
“I think that I’m the bigger and stronger fighter and I think that I don’t make as many mistakes as he does,” says Brown. “He gets put in a lot of bad positions and I tend not to. I’m pretty controlling in all my fights. I don’t get taken down very often and I don’t get put in these bad positions that he seems to. He does really well at getting out of them, but I would say his weakness is that he does get put in bad positions.”
Brown’s analysis of “The California Kid” certainly has some substance to it. Against both Jeff Curran and Bibiano Fernandes, Faber had his back taken and appeared in serious jeopardy. The 29-year-old displayed fantastic composure, however, and recovered in both bouts to record resounding victories. Brown is mindful therefore of Faber’s tenacity for the fight and admits the contest could go the distance.
“I think it has the potential to go all five rounds,” he acknowledges. He just went five in his last fight for the first time and he looked pretty good. I think it could go that way and I’m prepared. I’m doing a lot of cardio and I can go all day long.”
Brown’s preparation for the biggest fight of his career was blown off course when the event was postponed back in September due to Hurricane Ike. He readily admits his disappointment with the deferment of the card, but working out on a daily basis in Coconut Creek, Florida with a vast array of the best fighters in the world has given him a supreme confidence in his ability to get the job done no matter what the obstacle.
“I feel good and I know that I can compete with anybody in the world,” says Brown.
“I have many high-level training partners all the time. Even if you’ve got a couple of guys who are sick or injured or just fought, we have so much depth that there are so many good guys to train with even when you’ve got a few guys out.
“I train with a lot of the best guys at 155 pounds – (Gleison) Tibau, ‘JZ’ (Cavalcante), (Marcus) Aurelio. I spar with guys like Pitbull (Thiago Alves) and grapple with guys like (Marcelo) Garcia, so I know what’s out there and I know what I’m capable of. I know what people can do and there’s not a level that I haven’t seen.”
It’s the kind of self-belief one expects out of a successful and experienced pro, but such confidence is not shared by many fans of the sport who are unfamiliar with Brown’s talents. So not only is the UFC veteran aiming to walk away with a win and the title next Wednesday, he also hopes to earn the admiration of fans across the world thanks to the WEC’s expanding appeal.
“The casual fans don’t think I have a chance in hell to win this fight,” he concedes. “A lot of people think that. But I think the hardcore fans and a lot of fighters know what I can do and they know it’s going to be a really tough fight for both guys.
“It’s good to get the exposure finally, especially against Uriah because he’s their (the WEC’s) big star so they’ve pushed this fight a lot. It’s really good to finally get some notoriety after all the hard work I’ve put in.”
Hard work that Brown hopes will culminate in him capturing the most prestigious prize his weight class has to offer – the WEC featherweight title.
“It would be like completing the puzzle,” he concludes. “Putting that final piece of the puzzle in. To be the champ, to be the best; it would mean everything to me and it would be an honor to be champ.”

Straight-Shooting Sonnen aims to finish what he started against Filho
Nov-2-2008
By Thomas Gerbasi
It was going to be a holiday season Chael Sonnen would never forget. Not only was he going to be the WEC middleweight champion, but he was going to wear the belt because he had just apparently knocked out a man many considered to be neck and neck with UFC champ Anderson Silva for the top spot in the world at 185 pounds, Paulo Filho.
Or so he thought.
Sonnen even got so excited when he hurt and dropped Filho in the first round of their December 12, 2007 bout that he immediately yelled to referee Josh Rosenthal “He’s out, he’s out,” sensing that the end was about to come.
“I hit him on our feet and he went out and in fact, I caught him,” recalled Sonnen. “I walked all the way around him and grabbed him. In hindsight I should have just let him fall forward. But I was so excited because I thought it was over and I told the ref “he’s out.” And he was. He wasn’t moving or budging, but of course, I’m laying on top of him. For whatever reason, that was the route I took.”
The 31 year old recounts what happened that night with a bemused air, one that says “hey, what can you do?” That’s because moments after seemingly knocking Filho out, the Brazilian recovered. And even though he was still running on autopilot for the rest of the opening round, by the second stanza he was back in business, and at the 4:55 mark, he submitted Sonnen (albeit controversially when there was a question whether the Oregon native verbally submitted or not) and retained his crown. Sonnen took the defeat hard, and as far as taking solace in his performance up until the finish, he’s not buying it.
“It hurts,” he said. “I don’t know what a moral victory means. If the shoe was on the other foot and I got handed one that I didn’t quite earn, I’d feel just as good about it. I’d be completely content and proud of myself. At the end of the night, it’s whoever gets his hand raised, and so it hurt a lot. It kept me up at night. I got right back into the gym, but I was going through the motions and it was really difficult. I didn’t know how it would play out and whether I’d have this void forever. I’ve had a lot of disappointments in athletics over the years and they hurt a lot. But that’s the risk you take. It’s a two-man sport and only one guy’s gonna win.”
But given Sonnen’s effort and the controversial nature of the defeat, a rematch was immediately scheduled for March 26th of this year. But less than two weeks before the bout, Filho withdrew to enter a rehab center in Brazil. Sonnen opted to fight anyway – against Bryan Baker – and he pounded out a three round win over his then-unbeaten foe. As for the rematch with Filho, it will take place this Wednesday (VERSUS 8pm ET / 5pm PT) at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida. Sonnen still won’t be convinced it’s happening until he is in the same room with the champion though.
“There was a part of me that thought it was never gonna happen – that part’s still here and hasn’t gone away,” explains Sonnen of the return bout. “I need to lay eyes on him in Florida. If I see him, I know the fight will happen.”
As for the game plan, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
“Strategically, I’m gonna do the same thing,” he said. “I’m gonna throw him down and punch him in the face repeatedly.”
If Sonnen does what he did the last time, but also closes the deal with a victory, it will send shockwaves through the MMA world. Maybe not as many as it would have if he won the first time, but either way you cut it, beating Filho will be seen as an upset. It makes Sonnen wonder why – after putting together a 22-9-1 record in six years as a pro – he’s seen as such an underdog.
“I remember going into the (first) fight as a 4 to 1 underdog, and I was confused by that,” he said. “If you were to look at my schedule and Paulo’s schedule in terms of who we fought, I understand that he’s undefeated and did a great job, but my schedule’s been a little bit tougher than his, and I’ve never lost at 185 pounds either outside of that match with Paulo, which has a little asterisk next to it. I beat Amar Suloev, Travor
Click here to find out more!
Prangley, Mayhem Miller, Alex Stiebling, Jason Lambert, Homer Moore, and I’ve fought a lot of guys too, so yeah, it confused me a little bit, but at the same time, you have to understand that the guy’s undefeated, nobody’s even come close to him, so I’m not attempting to diminish his skills and accolades at all. He’s done a fantastic job and deserves to be ranked at the top – I get that. Maybe I was being a little too arrogant and buying into my own gimmick and thought that ‘geez, I didn’t know that everybody thought that I was such a slouch.’ That was news to me, but at any rate, I get one more shot at it.”
If he wins in that second shot, he will go down in the MMA record books as the WEC’s last middleweight champion (the organization is eliminating the 205-pound and 185-pound divisions to focus on the welterweight, lightweight, featherweight and bantamweight divisions after Wednesday’s card), but he will be far from done as a fighter. And since Sonnen will definitely be in the worldwide mix should he beat Filho, it will be interesting to see how everyone reacts to one of the straightest shooters in the game in the coming months. He chuckles.
“The only thing that I do that’s different than anyone else is I tell the truth,” said Sonnen. “Fighters just lie and lie and lie. I don’t know if they’re lying to themselves or they’re just trying to do what they perceive is a good interview.”
One of Sonnen’s favorite pet peeves has to do with fighters who claim to train for hours and hours everyday, leaving them no time for other pursuits. This is coming from a world-class MMA fighter who has also found time to run a real estate business and who has also served as an elected public official.
“I’m at the top gym in the world, and I’ve been to plenty of other gyms,” said the Team Quest standout. “I watched Randy Couture train for nine title fights, I’ve watched Dan Henderson and Matt Lindland train for title fights as well, and there’s nobody in the world who’s training more than three hours a day. But you’ve got these fighters who come out and lie – it takes so much time and they’re doing so much work, and I don’t know why they do that. Another thing they lie about is wanting to fight the best. ‘I want this guy at a hundred percent.’ Why? That’s not true. You don’t want the best. If they would hand you tomato cans, you would line up and fight ‘em one after the other. I just got asked yesterday, ‘do you hope Paulo’s a hundred percent? Do you hope he brings his ‘A’ game?’ No. I hope he wakes up with the flu, I hope he has to be helped to the ring because he has some injury and can hardly stand, and then I’ll clean him up. The last time I fought Paulo he was probably at 70 percent and he was a monster. Why would I want him at a hundred percent?”
So is the world ready for Chael Sonnen?
“There are only a couple of fighters out there, myself included, that will really fight anybody,” he said. “So not only will I bring honor back to the middleweight division, but I’ll also bring a lot of honesty back.”
As for Thursday morning, the day after his rematch with Filho, Sonnen admits that he has thought about it, and how his life will change should he win the belt. And while he says that he doesn’t want to get ahead of himself, he will have no trouble finding motivation for what the future may bring.
“There was a gentleman that won a world championship in wrestling named Les Gutches, and he was a hero of mine for many years,” said Sonnen. “And Les told me that after he won that world championship that the next day was one of the most depressing days of his life because he worked every day for that, and he no longer had a goal. Fortunately for me, when I win that middleweight championship, there’s gonna be another guy on the other side of town named Anderson (Silva) that’s claiming to be a champion in that same weight class. And this isn’t the BCS college poll where we identify two champions. The term ‘champion’ is very exclusive, and it’s exclusive to one. And if I’m not the champion, I don’t want to be called it. So my intention (after Wednesday) will change to finding out who the true champion is.”

Sonnen should never be vollying for a title shot in the UFC or any comparable promotion. he's not good. i don't know how he ever got in the cage with Filho the first time. even if he were to somehow beat Filho, which i give nearly zero chance with, that still doesn't make him a top contender to Anderson Silva. there are a division of MWs that apparently nobody has to fight to earn title shots and i really don't get it.
what i most hope for is that Filho gets back to disabling his opponents. he needs to break more limbs or at least render them useless, like how he used to. it would have prevented misaki from ever moving into Grand Prix title contention.

sure he got some wins, but i wouldn't call them big. it certainly doesn't constitute what would qualify as a title-run in a division as deep as UFC's middleweight. even with an unlikely win over Filho, he's still not even really top 5. there's Marquardt, Okami, Henderson, Maia, Leites, and even Bisping.. that's 6 guys i'd put over in quality of recent wins and competition, not including Franklin who's presumably at 205 and Anderson Silva. Sonnen's not on that level and it would be an enormous waste of time and propaganda to see him contend for Silva's strap.

Very solid card here. And they are actually even showing it live in Canada, on TSN which will be in HD.
Faber is going to have to fight a smart fight against Brown, because he is such a good wrestler. I do see Faber winning, but its tough to predict how its all going to go down. Perhaps we could see another long fight like we saw against Pulver.
Filho / Sonnnen was the one fight i'm probably looking forward too the most. Sonnen stands a good chance of ending his undefeated streak. I just think he may go back to his roots and go for a takedown instead of keeping it standing which is not a smart idea against Filho.
As far as Pulver / Garcia goes. I like it, both guys are suited to be at 145 better and the winner should fight for the title next. Pulver has pretty good takedown defense, better striking and is a pretty big, strong guy for 145 so I see him winning.
McCullough also is a guy I like to watch. He always usually puts on a good fight and i'm sure he would love to get a shot at getting his title back. The first fight against Varner was a fantastic fight, and although the Alexander fight was close I felt he did enough to win.

NOW A NON-TITLE BOUT, FILHO'S BELT STILL AT RISK

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – World Extreme Cagefighting middleweight champion and No. 2 ranked 185-pounder Paulo Filho on Tuesday missed weight at the WEC 36 weigh-ins. Not only did he miss weight, he was over by an astonishing seven pounds, weighing in at 192 pounds.
Filho will now go down as the final WEC middleweight champion. He will fight Sonnen on Wednesday night, but it will not be for the title.
MMAWeekly.com on Tuesday evening confirmed with WEC officials that Filho got down to 189 pounds on his second attempt, therefore making the bout ineligible for championship designation. The two camps did come to terms, allowing the fight to go on as a three-round non-title bout.
Sonnen's cornerman, Matt Lindland, said that Filho was penalized a percentage of his purse and that Sonnen would receive some monetary compensation for Filho missing weight and it being changed to a non-title bout.
Perhaps more interesting is that Filho's cornerman indicated to Lindland that they would give up the title belt if Sonnen wins. "His cornermen told us that they would walk across the cage and hand Chael the belt if he wins. When Chael whoops his ass, I expect them to live up to their word.
"I just feel bad for Chael, he doesn't get a chance at the title. This is three times that Chael has been ready for this fight," continued Lindland. "One time it was put off due to the threat of Hurricane Ike, but the other two times were Paulo's."
Despite losing its championship luster, the bout is still holds important implications for Filho and Sonnen. With the WEC discontinuing both the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions at the end of this year, this bout is expected to serve as a qualifier, likely to launch the winner into the WEC's sister promotion, the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Fight is still on but its non-title. Filho might as well be stripped for that. He has contractually failed to defend this belt. To have lost 3 lbs is tough on the body, but he'll put it back on over the next 24hrs. What a fucking mess. He doesn;t even look in good shape. He would look terrible at 205.
Things are seriously amiss with Filho. He may be missing the influence of BTT. He needs to get up to Florida and training at the Nog/Silva gym.

Filho's done nothing but look like garbage since leaving Japan.
i have a feeling he might be disappearing from the sport like Ricardo Arona if this doesn't work out for him. regardless of whether or not he can beat Sonnen, i don't see him doing well in the UFC.

I resisted saying this in my post above but
where the fuck is Ricardo Arona?
with his BJJ and control, in a cage and with elbows, he would be very, very dangerous in the UFC.

if he could, perhaps he would. im kinda dubious about what kinda performance Arona would put on in the UFC.

Wrestlers or BJJers wouldn't bother him. I think he would handle a lot of strikers pretty easily too. They will be too concerned about being taken down. Cos once you are there, you're staying there. Ask Machado.

I miss Arona. :(
*****.com: Ricardo, you have been out of the ring for more than a year now. What happened?
Arona: It’s already been a year since I fought, but that was by choice. Actually, I had invitations to fight in Canada, Japan and the USA, but I chose not to fight. I’ve been competing in jiu-jitsu, submissions and MMA since I was 15 years old. I decided to stop and watch from the outside, in order to be able to see everything that happens inside fighting. I had to find myself. It’s my aim to fight once or twice by the end of the year, but the most important thing is to come back well prepared, to come back different from what I was. I want to be a much more dynamic fighter in the next phase of my career. My desire to fight is still great. I’m watching everybody fight, observing what’s changed and what hasn’t. This time off has been as important to me as training; it’s part of my training.
*****.com: Do you think all this time spent away from competition will keep you out of the loop?
Arona: That’s why I dropped out of the scene. Sometimes, it’s more difficult to negotiate the fights. All the business stuff is no good, but I’m a fighter who never worries about that. I really worry about my performance. I’ve made a lot of mistakes in the past that resulted in me losing, and I don’t want to make those anymore. This next phase of my career is going to be a much more conscious phase. I’m going to put the same pressure on myself to win and use the same adrenaline. I’m going out there to win, but I feel I’ve matured. I’m going to fight more focused. I want to fight differently from now on.
*****.com: Do you want to continue to fight in Japan, or do you see yourself coming to America?
Arona: Actually, I’m connected personally to Japan. There is a lot of respect for the fights and fighters there. I have a great link to Japan, because I’ve spent years fighting there. I have fans, and I’m accustomed to that scene. In America, the crowd’s nosier, more agitated and wants to be entertained. For them, sometimes it’s not important that an American wins. They want to watch a great fight, and we have to adapt ourselves to that. I like the Japanese people a lot, and I would like to fight in Japan again, but if America is dominating the market, I want to be there. I’ve already fought against almost all of the top fighters. I want very much to be part of this new market. I’m waiting on a good contract to make my comeback. I’m doing my part to be well prepared, and I’ll be back to dominate the scene.
*****.com: I read an interview where you said the UFC rules for made for you. Why do you believe that?
Arona: When I arrived at Carlson Gracie’s gym at 16 years old, I already wanted to fight in MMA, and one of my specialties was taking my opponent down, striking him and hurting him from that position. This was cut from MMA when I went to fight in Japan. In the UFC, you can use the cage, which is perfect for me, because once you have your opponent in the corner, there’s no escape; it’s excellent to use to get the takedown. Once on the ground, it’s perfect for striking; it’s fatal. With those rules, I guess the referee will have to stop a lot of my fights quickly, because my great strong point is striking from above, from any position. The third factor I see is that anyone in the ring who gets tired in five minutes is in the wrong place. I’m accustomed to fighting one 10-minute round and two five-minute rounds. In the UFC, it’s three five-minute rounds, which is like child’s play for me. I’m flying in and out with that time. I wouldn’t even stop to wipe my forehead. The UFC rules were made for me -- no doubt about it.
****.com: What’s your current relationship with the Brazilian Top Team?
Arona: I’m still on the team. Nothing has changed. I’m not training there by choice, but I still have a connection with Murilo Bustamante (Pictures), and I don’t have any quarrels with them. We always made it clear that if our opinions ever changed, we would sit down and talk.
****.com: What motivates you to fight?
Arona: Fighting in MMA involves many things. Sometimes people only see the fight in the ring, but the preparation, the training, the nights we’ve spent thinking about our lives and families … all these things are involved until the day of the fight. It doesn’t matter if you’ve had 20 victories already; what matters is victory that day. There’s no way I can explain what it feels like to start and finish a fight. It’s what moves my life and makes my blood flow in my veins. In the fight, time and money don’t matter to me; only victory is important. Besides that, there’s the personal satisfaction I get. I get enormous pleasure out of going into the ring, looking into the eyes of my opponent, starting and finishing the fight and then receiving hugs from everybody. As long as I feel that, I’ll continue to fight. My age will not be a limit.
*****com: What would be your perfect scenario under which to come back to compete in MMA? Which promotion and which opponent?
Arona: I think the promotion would have to be the UFC, because it offers the best proposals and the best fighters, and it’s the best event and the best show. The best opponent for me is whoever has the belt, but I don’t think there’s any way to come back and fight right away for the belt.

on Filho there could be some perverse logic to his weight. If he doesn't lose much in terms of purse, then he wont lost out at all. The belt is dead anyway. As long as he is in trained and ready, he could win this aided by his extra weight and then move on to the UFC. Especially if he wins in round 1.
They must have sat round and thought if the belt doesn't matter, then the weight doesn't either. To come in so far above indicates a masterplan or little training. sadly I suspect the later. I still expect him to win though.

Yeah - my first thought was "Well, he's ballooning up for an early Thanksgiving." The belt is gone after this fight, so why defend it anyway? He'll stay champ and, assuming he's victorious, will waltz into the UFC, where he will be obliterated by any top-flight competition he faces.
I just put up some vbookies for this in the gambling forum. Filho is only a narrow favorite though at -130 vs -110 for sonnen.
