After winning super-heavyweight gold at the 1988 Seoul Olympics by stopping future champion Riddick Bowe, Lewis made his first big splash at heavyweight by knocking out Razor Ruddock inside 2 rounds. Ruddock had previously taken Mike Tyson the distance the year before. After Riddick Bowe vacated the WBC title for failing to face Lewis, The WBC declared Lennox it?s champion.
Lewis? title reign was a rocky one, being severely troubled by Frank Bruno and eventually being starched by Oliver McCall. Lewis rebounded from the loss nicely though, splattering Tommy Morrison, narrowly outpointing Ray Mercer, and avenging his loss to McCall. Lewis would then gain serious consideration as the best heavy on the planet (with Evander Holyfield) by destroying Andrew Golota in a single round. Many thought Golota, who had just given Riddick Bowe hell and retired him, would walk right through Lewis.
In 1999, Lewis would make the distinction between Holyfield and himself clear, dominating their first match en route to a very disputed draw and taking the decision in the much more closely contested rematch. With recognition as the undisputed heavyweight champion, Lewis then kayoed the guy many thought of as the future of the division, Michael Grant, and dominated the consensus number 1 contender in David Tua.
Lewis? train would be temporarily derailed though when he took hard-hitting Hasim Rahman too lightly and was knocked cold with a single right hand. In the rematch 7 months later Lewis was ready and motivated, and nearly knocked Rahman?s head off with a left-right combination and knocked his former conquerer out in dramatic fashion. Lewis? domination set the stage for a long overdue matchup against Mike Tyson. Although they were of similar ages, Tyson was far past his prime and Lewis was still in the midst of his. Lennox dominated Mike to a ridiculous extent before stopping him in 8 rounds. Though not a true indicator of whom the overall better fighter was, this fight was symbolic of Lewis? domination of today?s heavyweights. In his only fight since Tyson, Lewis was troubled by Vitaly Klitschko before eventually stopping him on cuts. Lennox has since proclaimed that he may never fight again but recent talks have been circling that he may come out of retirement for a Klitschko rematch.
