Just wondering if there is any way to strengthen your ability to take punches and not get KTFO. sparring comes to mind, but aside from that is there any methods you guys use to strengthen you "chin"? or is it just a natural thing?

Chew lots of bubble gum. I know this may sound silly, but this is what my friend did and his his jaw looks like a caveman's now. He actually has jaw muscles. He is a boxer and he has been doing this for about 6 years now. I am sure there are actually some exercises to strengthen your chin, but I am not too familiar with any of them.

not really other than strengthening the neck for absorbing the blows (harness and bridging). what is important is to learn to stay very calm when you get hit, which is unnatural but can be practiced in sparring.

I think that you're either born with a glass jaw or not, and that's because of your genetics, but you can do little things to increase the chance of not getting KTFO. Having a stronger neck will help you to absorb the blows better, and also keeping your chin tucked in will too.

Aside from proper boxing techniques, you have to strengthen your neck. Don't confuse this with increase the endurance of your neck (like doing bridges will do), you literally need to get your neck huge. Either get a neck harness and start curling away, or use a 4 way neck machine if your gym has one (probably not). Since it's a relatively small muscle group, but the gains are potentially so big for a fighter, you should do this frequently. A good rule of thumb would probably be to do neck work anytime you do grip work.

I'm not sure how the strength or size of the neck helps taking a punch. Kevin Randelman has a pretty round neck and it has been said that he can't take a punch.

With that said, having a strong neck is still important.

Sparring and getting experience is my only advice. When a person gets caught for the first time, he/she freezes, because they are surprised. Get used to taking punches or rolling with the punches.

Also, protect your chin by tucking it into your lead shoulder.

If you get caught, you're getting knocked out. And unfortunately Randleman can't box so he gets caught.

KO's are caused by a few things, but primararily when you hit someone on the chin, it snaps their head around the axis of their spine. Since the chin is the largest fulcrum you can hit, it produces the highest velocity of the brain. When the head snaps around fast, the brain actually twists which severs neuro connections. If you sever enough of these you pass out. Having stronger neck muscles is the only thing that will save you if you catch one on the chin, as stronger neck muscles will be able to resist the force greater.

So in summation, a stronger neck will help prevent KO's but not all KO's. In addition a stronger neck will help you in grappling, and just make you look more hossly in general.

man's right... aside from not getting hit, neck strength goes a long way towards preventing concussions.

there is very little muscle in the jaw...chewing gum would help in strengthening them...but you have to chew alot of gum. tho i dont think it will strengthen it a whole lot.

ive heard there are nerves at the back of the jaw line that when you are hit in the jaw, and your jaw hits the nerves. your KO'd. yet we have fighters with iron chins. is this innate? there must be something one can do to build an iron jaw.

yes, and the concussion is an enemy in boxing. when you get hit in the head something has to absorb the impact, whether it is the neck muscles or the jelly sack of the brain. that can be the difference between going to sleep and taking a shot.

Cus D'amato used to say a fighter needs to be the calmest when he gets hit. your natural reaction is to get excited, pop your head up and drop your hands but you need to remain cool and not show any emotion.
