View Full Version : Spoiler**** Overeem question.

Do you think Overeems incredibly effecive guillotine is a result of his skill at applying the move or his build. He has very long and quite thin limbs which i imagine once they are sunk in are nigh on impossible to remove. What do you think?

i feel that Overeem has learned to use his size. with his size advantage and limbs, it does make it extremly hard to get out of that move. its probably a combination of both, though. its going to take skill to catch somebody in the hold still, and lock it properly. his size just makes it harder to escape.

I think he is a guillotine bastard, he obviously sinks it in deep as Igor was tapping fast, and Belfort didn't seem to make too much of a struggle, so he's obviously doing someting right with it, I think that the length of his arms and height will aid him to a great deal with this submission and this is evident from his recent results.

Yeah the speed with which it makes people tap is impressive.

Allistar choked out a guy from my gym in ADCC finals a cupple of months ago ( with the guillotine ) , and i asked my friend how he could tap to Allistar and he said , you wont belive me how strong he is in this technique ( cuz this is my friends favorite technique to )
now that he has choked out Vitor and Igor i see it differently . the guillotine was made for him . he is tall , strong and has good technique .
in the Igor fight he almost choked his head of . in the slow mow they showed from one angle and you could see for a sec that Allistar had worked it in and was now turning with his whole body and Igors head was falling off .
i hate that fucker , Igor should have Knocked that fool out

Basically, its both. His build aids him in being able to adjust his technique, so he can sink it in extra deep, crank the neck, and pull up. I love watching Alistair rape bitches with it.

Both. He's long and strong and has mastered a technique that suits his build. I can't wait to see how well he can use it on a Chute Boxe guy.

The leverage he had on Igor because of his height made it a choke and a neck crank all at once.
It takes skill to use the advantages you were given at birth.

Shooto Nog isn't tall but his guillotines is second to none. Alistairs next fight against Shogun is going to be hard for him. It was nice move for Overeem but Igor didn't even try to escape. Watch Igor vs Rampage that is my favorite way to remove guillotine.

Overeem was fucking wrecking Igor with that. Igor couldn't lift him up; if he tried, Overeem would just jump guard and bring him down to the mat, like Pequeno does.

When I'm training I always jump guard if I try to do guillotine. When you try to escape from guillotine choke(lifting) you have step next to your opponent so he can't jump to the guard. Ofcourse in this case AO had significant size advantage.
Anyway Overeem has trained lots of guillotine and I bet it is hard to escape it.

I imagine the only weakness he leaves is the gap he leaves near his elbow.
Maybe you can stick your arm in there, gain some sort of leverage and twist your face out.

You know, if you are in a Guillotine, you could also just go to the ground into the other person's guard, as I find it alot easier to escape the guillotine from guard than standing anyways.
Just reach around the person's head, grab onto the opposite shoulder and drive your shoulder into their face. Works nearly every time.

So if you're being guillotined, and your head is under their right armpit. You reach around with your right arm and grab their right shoulder, or vice versa?

If your head is under their right armpit, you reach around their back with your right arm and grab as far under their right shoulder as possible. Then you pressure down on your right side as much as possible, driving your shoulder into their face.
This is pretty much the standard escape to a guillotine.

Cool cheers, i've never really been taught how to escape a guillotine, i always just vice my head out and just try to keep my head down so they can't get their forearm across your windpipe. I hate when guys just headlock you thinking they have something, i have to wrench my head out and my neck always kills the next morning

I used the muscle and force method at first, but I then slowly realized that when people know the technique, it doesn't matter how strong I am. The actual escape is much easier on the neck, but you sometimes have to go without air for a second or two longer.

I think Alistair should jump up, as if to throw the flying knee, then fake the guy out in mid air and guillotine him. Best. Sub. Eva.

Yeah. Its kind of stupid when I try to show people Overeem, and I'm like "He's the Flying Dutchman. Madd flying knees", then he gets a takedown and then ends up guillotining someone. I just have to shrug my shoulders.
Anyway, I'm seriously hoping he breaks out the flying guillotine soon.

Also, I have a friend who is 6'5", 190 pounds, with the exact same hair cut, style and color as Overeem, the same facial features including the big lips and long pickle-shaped head, and he even has an orange shirt. He looks exactly like Alistair, except white. I now call him "Demolition Man" regularly, and he has no idea why. I love it.

I can't stand when people try to play it off like Alistair's hammer isn't fucking bomb as hell. It was fruity when he rocked the goggles and construction hat...but the big wooden mallet is the fucking shit.

Wanderlei has managed to get the easiest path to the finals. The #1 fighters has yet to face anyone in the top 10 in the tournament so far. Shogun and Arona will most likely be a war and whoever wins will unlikely be able to fight well in the finals.

Arona has got the easiest path to the finals. He faced Lister in the 1st round and Saku in the 2nd round. Besides, watch any sports tournament and you'll see that the highest ranked team always draws the lowest ranked team. That's your reward for being the best. Why is it that that concept is okay unless it applies to Silva? As for the finals, no matter what the draw, no one is going to have an easy time going into the finals.

True Arona has also had an easy path. Shogun has had the hardest path followed by Alistair at least on paper. This is part of the reason I hate tournaments.

Paths don't bother me in GPs too much (at least not until the semis). If you want to win then you need to beat the best IMO. What I don't like is the final round where they have to fight twice. That doesn't always necessarily prove who the better fighter is. Look at all the Wand haters/Rampage fans that said Wand only won the 2003 GP cuz Rampage fought Chuck first. Luckily Wand got to prove his superiority definitively later on.
Yeah, Wanderlei is afraid that he might fall asleep in the middle of the fight and doesn't want that to happen.... lol ... Arona is the master staller ... anyway, Sakuraba had bad dreams, probably Wanderley does not like this kind of nightmare too much ...

Fighteres fighting twice in one night really bugs me especially at that level. To me the GP title is almost worthless except for it's $ value. The GP has been great for a fighter like Shogun and Overeem who have shown how good they really are. The title that really matters is the LHW championship. They always say the GP is to determine who the best in the World (in reality Pride) is but we already know that the best LHW in Pride is Wanderlei. At least until someone beats him. If Wanderlei loses in the GP his LHW(MW) championship becomes worthless. And Pride could have a #1 fighter who is not a champion which is rediculous.

I hear ya. I guess if Wand was to lose in the semis to a guy he has never fought before then it would be a legit win. Besides, Wand will still be the MW champ regardless of the outcome of this tourny. If Wand doesn't win the GP, I hope they set up a normal fight w/ him and the winner soon afterwards.

Just imagine the worst case senario. That is lets say Overeem beats Wanderlei and then loses in the next round to say Shogun. In this case their champion could concievably wind up the #3 LHW in Pride. If you are going to have these GP then champions shouldn't be allowed to compete and they should be to determine the #1 contender for the belt ot something like that. That way it would at least have a meaning or some long term goal.

i'm the same height as overeem, so i can completely vouch for the advantage that being tall and wiry can offer a fighter. my standing front choke has tapped many people, and it is partly due to technique and partly due to thin forearms. not to mention longer limbs let you apply it in situations where an opponent usually thinks he is safe. it's much harder to defend a move that you don't think you are at risk for.

once again you display your nuthuggerdom. I think ive already replied to this idiotic comparison to team playoff sports ... its a combat sport, fight the #1 contender. Why does he get to fight nobodies without putting his belt on the line, then get the easiest path in the GP?

you don't fight the #1 contender in a tournament format.
Yes, he should've fought Arona for the belt by now and he should fight the #1 contender -when he defends the strap, but not in the tournament format he shouldn't.
Someone has to have the "easiest path" and it should be the champion's reward. That being said, I still think Arona's path has been the easiest.

Whether it's team sports or individual sports, the highest ranked always face the lowest ranked. Give me one example where this is not the case and I?ll give you ten where it is.
