The O.C. Bad Apple Report

This is a segment I decided to do with our good friend Erik Apple, so that we can get his views on the current happenings of his career, his fight team Ruas Vale Tudo and mainstream MMA in general. Apple recently improved his record to 6-0 with a victory over Mark Kempthorne in King of the Cage on June 12th and figures to be a name that we will be hearing a lot more from in the future.

JD: Talk to us about your last fight in KOTC.

Apple: I fought a guy named Mark Kempthorne who trains at Paragon Jiu Jitsu and with Brian Warren as well. He was a tough guy who had good jiu jitsu on his back and attempted a lot of subs even while I continued to pound on him. I passed his guard and mounted him a couple times and his corner through in the towel at 1:57 into the second. He was 4-1 before he fought me so it was a good test for me.

JD: Do you have any fightplans lined up for the near future?

Apple: I have fought 4 times in the last 8 months. I need a break. I'm going to go on tour and do a bunch of TV and announcing stuff all over the US, Mexico, and England for the next couple of months. I plan to keep fighting in KOTC and I would like to compete in Japan in Deep or Bushido.

JD: How are this going at Ruas Vale Tudo? Any news coming out of the camp?

Apple: Justin Levens is going to be fighting soon in WEC. He is 6-0 just like I am, and a major threat to the LHW division. We are all very excited about Pedro's Pride debut later this month. He is going to hurt people in that ring.

JD: Give us your opinion on this past UFC 53.

Apple: I think it was a relatively weak card. Relative to their recent cards that is. Franklin and Tanner was good. Buentello and Loiseau really impress me. Other than that I am not that excited about it. I think Griffin is going to get smoked once he faces a big player at LHW. I like him and the way fights, but he is in big trouble as soon as fights someone like Chuck, Randy, or Babalu.

JD: What do you think about new UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin?

Apple: I knew Franklin would become Champion. He owned Tanner before , and there was no reason for me to think that this one would different. Franklin is a very well rounded fighter who is dangerous from any position.

JD: How do you think you would match-up with a guy like Franklin?

Apple: Franklin and guys like him are the reason I am fighting as a welterweight now. He is HUGE. That guy cuts from 210 to get to middleweight. I walk at like 193 or so I am just not going to be big enough. Skill wise, he is very solid. I believe that I can compete with him without a problem though. Im sure Marco, Pedro , and Babalu have hit me a lot harder than he ever could.

JD: What do you think about the Pride Middleweight Grand Prix?

Apple: The grand prix is great as always. Those really are the best guys in the world. Bar none.

JD: Who do you think is going to move on to the semi-finals? Who do you think is going to win it all?

Apple: I think that Silva, Rogerio, Igor, and Arona will advance. Although in my heart I want to see Saku win. And Nakamura isn't easy to beat. Wanderlei is the man, the tournament is his to lose. Meaning if he doesn't win, it's an upset. However, Rogerio should take him if the stars and the moon are aligned right.
