Short Story: Thoughts of a Journeyman fighter
For some reason I had this idea come to mind of describing a journeyman fighter?s perspective when he is in the ring. For story purposes we shall say the main character is named Bill Jones. Bill is journeyman middleweight who fights mainly on the club scene. His record is 14-38-0 with 10 KO?s and he usually is brought in to fight prospects. I shall try and describe Bill?s thoughts as he goes through the fight. The perspective on this is from the fighter himself
7:50 Pm- arriving at fight venue
Damn I got here late again! Always seems to happen when I take fights on such short notice. I had no idea Shank County had a fairgrounds being as this place is so desolate. I wonder who I will have as a corner man this time? Seems like I always end up with someone who is either cornering their first fight or who doesn?t give a crap and just wants to earn the 50 bucks the promoter paid him for cornering a guy like me. I wish Jimmy was still alive. He was the best corner man I ever had. No time for reminiscing though as I go on in an hour and need to get my hands wrapped. Where the hell is my corner guy?....
8:50 pm- ten minutes before fight time
Ok, im all ready to go. Mr Buchantz (the promoter) tells me that my opponent is named Marcus Primera. Apparently he is some hot shot prospect that has been mowing down opposition left and right and im supposed to be no different. I hope that is smoke and mirrors though. I could really use the 1000 bucks I would get for winning this bout. The car has stopped running right again and Jerri (Bill?s wife) wont stop nagging me about the overdue payments on our house. I really wish my job at the plant was enough to get by but with all the bills due I still must box. I don?t do it for the love anymore, that went out after getting knocked out 6 straight times. However taking out a guy like Primera could set up a nice payday and maybe finally I can leave this sport and its shady promoters behind,
9:10- Preparing for round 1
Wow I didn?t expect this kid primera to be so muscular. The promoter told me he was a hoss but I didn?t expect him to be in the shape he is in. . Ok time for business as the bell has rung. DAMN that shot hurt! Those right hands didn?t bother me so much before. Why cant I land on this kid? Im trying to set up combos but he is so elusive... And his punches in bunches are carrying some steam to them too. My head is starting to ache from his right hand... Why do I feel woozy all of a sudden? Thank god that?s the bell for round 1, I don?t know how many more of his shots I could take that round.
9:21- Round 2
Stupid fucking corner man. Why did he forget the ice pack? My head is throbbing and his advice of stick and move isn?t working for shit right no.....OW! Fuck I cant see straight. That right hand of his is making me woozy again.... I wonder if Jerri remembered to pay the bill for the electric this month? Everything is going black and I feel like im falling eternally,
9:32- Fight is over
Apparently I was out on the canvas for about two minutes after the solid right hand Primera landed turned my lights out. I?ll give that guy some credit.. He hits like a ton of bricks and should have a solid future..... This corner guy is useful for one thing as im able to lean on him on the way back to the dressing room. That kid saying good job mister to me in the crowd does help ease the pain just a little bit.
10:30- Leaving the building
200 bucks. A lousy fucking 200 bucks that shady promoter gave me. I drove four hours for this bout and all he could come up with was 200? Ill never work for him again. Who am I kidding, I probably will work for him again at some point, As long as I can make money to help pay my family?s bills I will always be tied to the sport of boxing. Speaking of which im sure I could line up a fight in a couple of weeks in Kentucky. Their medical board wont know about tonight?s embarrassing KO and black out and there is always somebody looking for a live body to help boost their prospects rep. Matter of fact ill give Sam Jenkins(Kentucky promoter) a call right now................
