Probably your power supply is failing. Could be worse.

is your pc getting hot

if so it is overheating due to the fact your fan stopped working.

my advice. open the pc up, and remove the fan that stopped. look in your pc as to where other spots are open for a fan, bring the fan to a local best buy, circuit city, local pc shop and get it replaced and if you have room for any other fans in the pc, add them to your system.

the cheap generic fans work fine, dont let them upsell you on any "quiet" fans etc.

regular 80mm fans run 6.99-7.99 on sites like newegg.com

also although it isnt recomended, you could for a day or two run your pc with the wall removed on the side to let air circulate inside the pc although it can be dangerous and you shouldnt do it for long.

put your pc in your fridge then you won't need a fan.

Fans are overrated.. When mine was going out, I just took the side panel off and put a mini-fan next to it and everything was worked like a charm.

A small advice, stay clear of generic, cheap fans for the most part. They tend to allow for much more temperature variations than is strictly desired. You don't even need to bring your fan, what CPU do you have? Certain fans only fit with certain CPU sockets, so just take a note of what CPU you have and check what socket it uses and go looking for a mid-range fan. Though, unless you want an aircraft in your living room, pay some attention to the decibel given on the package .. Remember that it's a logaritmic scale, so there's a huge difference between 22 and 26 db..

That all depends on the CPU. I could never do something like that with my CPU, I would probably be arrested for attempted arson if I tried something like that. Older CPUs didn't even require fans, today they do for the most part, but having a new Pentium or new AMD means that you really should have a fan or else it will fry in short while. Mini living room fans have two problems, they do not chill the CPU well enough under heavy load and the fact that you have to have your case open and blow more dust onto your motherboard is reason enough to be cautious about it. I'm not saying it's always a bad idea, but in general it's better to buy a new fan, they're not that expensive.

Oh, and to add in, your computer shuts down because the CPU overheats. It's quite common. Older AMDs used to burn instead of just shutting down, it's pretty fun. Was a video going around on a couple of dudes running a Quake 3 demo making the CPU work and then yanking the fan out of place, pretty interesting to observe how different Pentium and Ahtlon handled it.

Well, your CPU fan must still be working or you cant be posting, its the main fan and those are easy and cheap to get.

My CPU fan stopped working once, and it fried the chip in 3 seconds.
I also installed a CPU without that jelly shit once, and that burned it out really fast too.

my computer turns on, but shuts down a few minutes later. when I turned it on again, the fan quickly came on, but just turned off.

i'm posting at my work now, so don't get any funny ideas.

Sounds like your fan is defect, time to replace it methinks.

just throw ice cubes at it.

someone said above about taking the side panel off and putting a lil house fan there to blow inside...that will get you by if your feeling lazy and dont wanna fix it yet.

i'm not going to gamble with the "mini-fan". I'll just get it repaired ASAP. don't you guys want BJ vs. Gomi and Bonatello's mid/high kick?

lol, its not a gamble really, but whatev. their gonna probly charge you a grip. they can easily play off that its a pain to take the fan and heatsink off. but i mean, if you cant do it you dont really have much a choice.
