The Inside Look: Interview with Mike Swick
BloodyKnux.Com, in association with the great folks over at MMAnation.tv bring you another fine interview care of our very own JD Field:
On August 6th during Spike TV?s broadcast of UFC Ultimate Fight Night, American Kickboxing Academy standout Mick Swick (6-1) will be looking to make an impression in the UFC Middleweight Division. Swick will face UFC 51 veteran Gideon ?The Gladiator? Ray (9-2-1), in what is likely to be a stand-up war, where the winner may end the night with a highlight reel Knock Out victory and a permanent place in the talented weight class. Mike was gracious enough to take some time to answer some of my questions, regarding his training, his up coming fight with Ray, and his future among other interesting topics.
JD: What made you decide to become a professional fighter? At what point did you make the decision to make it a career?
MS: I have competed in martial arts since I was 8. I have just progressed into newer and better styles. I always wanted to be a professional martial artist in one style or another.
JD: Tell us a little bit about your training team. Who do you train with currently? What positive influences does your team have on your development as a fighter?
MS: I currently train with Team AKA at The American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, CA. Some of my training partners include Jon Fitch, Josh Koscheck, Trevor Prangley, Mike Van Arsdale, Bobby Southworth, Paul Buentello, Mike Kyle, Josh Thomson. My trainers are Bob Cook, Lynn Schutz, Javier Mendez, and Dave Camarillo.
JD: Tell us about your personal training routine.
MS: I have my first session from noon till 2pm. That?s fighter training with all the fighters. We will usually spar and grapple. We always spar and grapple 5 minute rounds with 1 minute rests. We will do at least 4rounds of each. Sometimes we will also spar with a 10 minute first round. Then I usually go home and eat and nap and then head to do Cardio and Strength. Then after that I will go to Jiu-Jitsu. It?s a full time gig...
JD: On August 6th during the UFC Ultimate Fight Night card, you are scheduled to face a UFC veteran Gideon Ray, what do you know about your opponent as a fighter? What do you think he brings to the table as a challenger and how do you think you match-up with him?
MS: I think we match up well. He is a striker and so am I. I haven?t seen much of him but I hear he is tough and talented. I think we will put on an exciting show for the fans.
JD: During the filming of the Ultimate Fighter reality show, there was mention of a hard fought battle between yourself and Chris Leben. Would you be interested in a rematch with Leben the in the future and possibly in the UFC if both of you are successful on the August 6th card?
MS: It is out of my hands and I am actually tired of talking about him. If the UFC ever puts us together I would love to fight him.
JD: What are your thoughts on the UFC Middleweight division? Which fighters do you think stand out as the upper echelon of the division?
MS: I see a lot of talent in the 185 division and I hope to mix it up with
them.
JD: What kind of things do you like to do when you are not fighting or training?
MS: Traveling and Poker.
JD: Is there anything that you would like to share with the MMA community and your fans?
MS: Thanks for all the support! We couldn?t do what we love if it wasn?t for you guys. Check out my webpage, www.mikeswick.com, for current news, pictures, videos, and to see my sponsors.
