View Full Version : Why no sex or masturbation a week prior to competition?
I've heard this a lot and am curious why not masturbating or having sex a week prior to competition would make a difference.

I think all studies done have shown that it won't affect you.
Well the only thing I can think of is sex really tends to be a distraction, especially for the non married.

I get really aggressive after a few days without sex.
I think its a primal urge to compete with other males for women, letting the fluids build up gets your mojo goin.
You have more testosterone after a few days, so I have come to believe.

I don't have sex one week prior to a fight...I feel that I have more energy and I'm more aggressive. It could be just in my mind but as long as it works for me I'll do it.

So why don't you quit for 2 weeks then?

I get aggressive as fuck without sex. I think the best lead-up to a fight would be one month without sex or masturbation and some booze every now and then. I would be pretty hyped come fight night.

It has something to do with your testosterone levels. Try having sex then go to the gym. You'll be deader than dog shit.

Try to live a week in celibacy and than go to the gym rolling with someone like Gazzy or Kira.

Supposedly it keeps you on edge, sex will relax you.
Also it can be tiring.

It's bullshit. I'm an ISSA trainer, 2 x world champ weightlifter, etc. Some folks used to buy into it, but studies have consistently shown that sex raises the testosterone levels in the body for a short while immediately after. Long term, the T-level tapers off and remains normal. For that reason (yeah, this is fucking gross) some guys actually rub one out immediately before meets, although you probably won't find note of that in Powerlifting USA. Just don't go too hard or you'll screw up the grip on your deadlift. :D

Yeah, double that. The reason the myth started was through basic ignorance of body chemistry. Plus the fact some coaches thought it took away from training as you had to go out and find some. Remember guys the myth started well before Kinsey in times where people thought you could get pregnant if you french kissed.
PS. I actually know Sal the founder of ISSA personally.

I tested that too. At my first amateur mma fight I didn't have any sex one week prior. I lost. For my second fight I had sex the day before and I won. So after the logic I have to have sex before a fight to win.

Same here. Now I can attribute my loss to the lack of sex and masturbation, not lack of skill and preparation.

I have, I've been in the army.
Not Masturbating =/= Being in the Army
I forget the word for that kind of logic, but it's false.
I jerked all ten weeks of basic, 27 weeks of AIT, and probably at least a couple times a day in the field.
Read Black Hawk Down, there's guys looking for places to jerk off while they're getting shot at.
On topic, I know air force guys don't actually do PT, but if you DO exercise on occasion, try doing it immediately after sex. It fucks stuff up a bit, just like if you went for a roll, then hit the gym, or vice versa.
There is some merit to it all, but I don't believe it has much to do with testosterone stores. More along the lines of what Mickey said in Rocky, "Dames weaken the legs..."
If you spend all day training hard, then, rather than racking out to recover, you pump away on a chick for an hour... Lactic acid sets in in your thighs, glutes, calfs, shoulders, whatever. Hti the jump rope again the next day, other drills like that... It's just not gonna happen long term.
Going weeks and weeks without it is jsut gonna piss you off, but that can be good.

My trainer was saying that it almost brings out the primitive man in someone, you are trying to defeat the other male to get the woman.
or something like that.

I've never met him, but I've had some great exchanges w/him via email. Brilliant guy; him and Dr. Hatfield both. That's what drew me to ISSA: no organization even comes close to the staff's credentials or level of expertise. Also, the powerlifting undertones were a big draw :D

ok, i don't train to fight or anything but i did some bodybuilding for awhile and experimented a bit with just how much sex or masturbation can effect your athletic performance. it can be severe. i don't know what the longest i went was but possibly 2 weeks. the first week in particular i noted a consistantly strong performance. i don't know what kind of gains i experienced if any in strength/mass or whatever but i was definitely more consistant overall, and regularly at least hitting my target maxes. when i did eventually succumb and get myself a release. it was pretty intensly relaxing and in context with the intensity and consistancy of my performance for the week or so without it made me feel a bit lazier. i don't recall losing any strength over it exactly but my focus was a bit thrown and my consistancy wavered. i think it's the high contrast of going so long without and then letting go compounded with whatever mindstate i had adapted therein.

That problem has to do with focus though, not biochemical reactions triggered by climaxing. If there is any effect on focus from sex, the root problem of lack of focus needs to be addressed. You should be so focused that you can have you best lifts in the worst possible conditions. I got my 655 squat PR with pneumonia. It's just a matter of confidence in your lifting. You can feel like dogshit, it can be loud around you, some girl can be shaking her ass in a pair of spandex shorts on the stairmaster... but the biochemical and biomechanical processes that contribute to your lifting are almost never affected by these things--focus almost always is. Guys mistake grunting and screaming and stomping around before they lift for focus or intensity; it's not. What most people mistake for focus is actually a distinct lack of focus.
