...how do you tighten up a standing arm triangle?
I'm having trouble putting people away with them... should I take it to the ground? Push forward on the head?
...by people I mean my dog, coworkers, friends, etc.

on the hand that is attatched to the arms around the other guys neck, walk your fingers farther and farther across your shoulder and try to touch your shoulderblade, but do it slowly, also make sure you are grabbing your own head with the other hand.
Getting this to the ground will also help you.
They're not a good "standing" submission (if such a thing exists). Just getting your hips away will loosen up a standing triangle. If you insist on doing such thing, push them up against a wall, creating a sort of "vertical mount" . From there, say I have my right arm wrapped around his neck. Well, then I'm gonna put my right leg in between his legs, forcing my whole body to the left. Make sure to grapevine his legs so he doesn't just slide away. This way you've basically got a mounted arm triangle while vertical.

When in the triangle position, squeeze the thighs and push the head down to inclose space, which they could escape from.

nice, thanks guys. Because of my frame I find it very easy to slap this on when clinching - I usually tire the guy out a good deal with it but end up taking him down to a guillotine instead.

That is, unless you're not actually training, and you're just fucking around with people. Jumping on someone's back in and choking them usually isn't very socially acceptable..........trust me :(

Pinch your knees together, pull on his head towards your crotch, and push your hips up.

Oh arm triangle.
I don't really have any information or tips on that, but try I to keep my head as close to theres as I can, and grab my own bisep. But standing, try and stand as close to them and straight up and down as you can, kind of holding them up so they can't base out.
I always get caught in that motherfucker in thai clinches.

TT, sweep him from the arm triangle and torque him onto his back, finish it off as a side choke. Standing arm triangle is pretty useless though.

I agree, standing arm triangles wont have much effect on a person with some skill.
