Brilliant. The midget is hilarious. The end is bizarre with the dragons and shit.

Eyre is a little badass. So is John Snow. I downloaded the first season and watched it over the course of a couple days about a month ago. Fantastic. I know the second season is in production now, can't wait.

I don't see the end being all that bizarre, seeing as there are direwolves and white walkers and stuff like that. I can't wait for the 2nd season though, which is why I hate watching shows while they're still in production. Seriously, I just started watching the Wire right now.

Read all the books, and watched the first season. If you think the first season was good, you ain't seen nothing yet. Season 3 is gonna be madness, I'm pissed its gonna take so long to get that far. Season 2 is gonna be pretty awesome too, I'm hoping HBO ups the budget since it was such a success. They cut out a lot of awesome battles scenes and dream sequences in season 1, season 2 is going to have a lot more war going on hopefully they show some of it this go around

If anyone reads, I highly recommend reading these books. The first 3 books are just amazing, the 3rd book is probably the best book I've ever read

I've actually just started reading the books. I'm a couple hundred pages into the first one, and it's excellent.
The show did very very well though, it's as good as the book (so far). Tyrion Lannister is a fantastic character.

Reluctantly started watching this as I needed something new after Boardwalk Empire finished up and loved it from the first episode. Can't wait for the second season and looking forward to seeing how the characters and storylines develop.

The best thing about this story is that any time you think you know what is going to happen, Martin turns the story on its head. Every book has a million twist and turns in it and they come out of nowhere and leave with your jaw dropped. I felt one thing that the books did better than the show was build suspense and tension. But the acting in the show was great, and I really liked the added scenes Martin put in just for the show
Martin also does a great job of developing dynamic characters, he blurs the lines of good and evil and let's the reader decide who they want to root for or against. Last edited by Randjob : 10-17-2011 at 04:56 AM. |

I don't want to give too much away but one of the deaths in the first series had me fucked. Didn't see it coming at all.

Yeah, I like the fact that people - even main characters can possibly die in the show. I hate Hollywood movies these days where the good guy lives no matter what.
1 on 50 when they all have machine guns? No problem. It's ridiculous.

Yea that's one of the reasons its so awesome. Especially in a fantasy novel, the good guys almost always live and triumph over evil. Martin kind of turns the traditional fantasy novel on its head with this story

Good and evil are relative concepts to where you're standing and Martin's character building is second to none that I've seen. The main problem I had with the series was leaving out significant portions of early character building and leaving everyone in the backgrounds of scenes as irrelevant, instead of imbuing them with a sense of purpose and character in those scenes to establish them from the start. I do understand how/why that happens, but it's regrettable - along with some of the backstory and history falling by the wayside and subtle changes to character arcs that hurt them severely imo. The books tower over the series in terms of quality (some of the best books on the shelves), but it's still one of the better adaptations I've seen.

I get that, I'm talking about minor things like just having a few lines to establish character on future important characters that serve as nothing but window dressing now, which will hurt their characters for viewers in the future, imo. It's really a minor quibble in the grand scheme of things, but I just wanted more done on that score. Give a character a line or two or just a reaction shot and some acting to do now so that he's partially established and set-up later -- especially if he becomes important or I'm supposed to have some feeling toward him at that point. They're more supremely focused on certain people, which is more than understandable and much easier to make work and work well for tv, just occasionally annoying in regards to what's missed.

Awesome fucking show. I recommend GoT to everyone I meet, because I love the character development and strategy and fantasy. Tyrion Lannister, Arya and Bronn are my favorites so far.

I'm hoping for big things from Jon Snow and Eyre this season. Also, although I haven't read the books, in a casual conversation someone told me the actual reason Jamie Lannister killed the Mad King, and it definitely made me look at the character differently. Brilliant show.

Yea not to spoil anything but for me Jamie becomes a much more likeable character later in the series. He's probably one of the more dynamic characters in the story, and I'm hoping the show does a good job of capturing that.
Also the girl's name is Arya, just to clear that up. Her storyline is also one of the best in my opinion. And everybody loves Jon Snow |

I'm not sure if I want to read the books, which may ruin the show for me...

I can say that reading the books did not ruin the show for me. I still really enjoyed watching the first season. Like I said I was disappointed they cut out some stuff, especially the battles and dream sequences but the budget wasn't all that high. Now that its really successful I'm hoping they put that stuff into the next season, although I don't really know how they could avoid it since there's so much war in the next two books. Sorry if that's a spoiler, if you watched the first season though you probably know that shit is about to hit the fan

See, watching the show didn't really ruin the book for me either; I enjoyed the book anyways as it was very well written.
I suppose what I really meant to say was that it ruined some of the surprise for me instead. Still, great book. I'll have to choose one or the other soon enough.

I just started the first book, have not watched the show at all. I'm about halfway through the first novel, and it's good, but heavy on the whole political intrigue and king's court bullshit type of thing. Does that ease up and more action come into play later?

^Yes, but it still intertwines with the political as well...after all, it IS called Game of Thrones
But, it definitely gets better. Watch the show!

It's that way on several of the latest books too, so beautifully framed if you take your time on them, but you can't resist rushing onward. The subsequent re-readings benefit as a result at least |

I started reading the first book a few weeks ago. It's going kinda slow, but I'm not bored yet. There seem to be a lot of characters to keep track of.
