That Harrington on Hold Em book was one of the first books I bought back in the day, awesome read. The second book is equally awesome, I forget the name, I think it might be End Game.

And I totally agree with what KCB said about playing live compared to online. I don't know what its like playing in real gambling cities like Vegas or Atlantic City, but somewhere like Harrahs here in New Orleans is easy money at 1/2NL. Bunch of old people pissing away money and drunks, they do have people who can play obviously but they're pretty easy to pick out.

It's been a while since I've played on a regular basis, reading all this is making me want to start up again. Back during the boom I had a group of friends who were as addicted as I was and we'd play house games 2 or 3 times a week plus we all played online nightly. Now that all that has cooled down, and the group of friends has kind of gone their separate ways I just hardly ever play anymore.

im about to get my first game going since buying my house. got me a decent poker table, nice green felt. also got a 500 chip set of genuine chips when i was in vegas this past august. im ready to get going. cant wait.

When I first started playing I was by far the worst or pretty close. I went from only playing online for free money once every 8-10 months just to kill time to playing every weekend for $5 in home game tournaments. Then this new guy moved to town and introduced us to cash games which I was hesitant about at first but ended up liking infinitely better. After a few years I think I was one of the better players, if not the best, in our home game. I think I was the only one that actually worked on his game, though.

No, because the DOJ shut down the American online poker market last year. Sucks very badly.

ZEN cannot be touched by Justice because they use points for entries, even though fools buy points would make it the exact same as buying in with money(?). Anyway, they have some pretty cool cash prizes and others (VIP entry to Playboy mansion party) for the pros to win while the rest of us just waste our time.

I'm not familiar with ZEN but if it's anything like the WPT site, users pay a monthly fee (last I read, it was $19.99) for a certain number of points which can be used for tournament entries. I'm unsure about cash games. Prizes can be won, but no actual dollars are credited to the users AFAIK, but I could be wrong because I haven't followed online poker since about April 30th, 2011. Anyway, that is how they circumvent the DOJ/UIGEA.

Threat of the DOJ wasn't enough to stop me from playing (I still tried playing post-Black Friday) but the goings-on behind the Absolute Poker and Full Tilt curtains definitely was. Basically, it was discovered that FT was not a solvent company, meaning there was not enough money to fulfill all the cash out requests for Americans. Many lost their entire bankrolls and had to go work a "real job". Everyone knew Absolute was shady as fuck (see: cheating scandal) so it was no surprise when none of their American players were not paid back, either. Both sites ended up shutting down completely, to both American and European players.

So, I'm staying away from online poker until it becomes regulated.

Small update: I'm playing online again. I deposited like $30 in Bovada a few weeks ago just out of boredom to play the .02/.05 (5NL) tables. I now have $101.11. Not sure how long I'll play but it'd be nice to run up a $500 or $600.
