Timmeh KOing Arlovski in their 2nd fight is one of my favorite MMA moments. Tim is awkward and had a tendency to be boring, but he seemed like a nice dude so it was cool to see him win and piss a lot of people on the internet off.

Tim's always been the sport's most mocked athlete. His own camp didn't treat him right with Hughes mocking him publicly. I don't know how committed he really is to the sport, being a dad and part time cop, but if he's going to make a run at being relevant he needs to do it now.

The HW division is still shallow, but the top of the heap is a hell of a lot better than they were in Tim's heyday. I'd still love to see and in shape Timbo against Roy Nelson or Daniel Cormier.

Sylvia was subpar in every area of MMA but because he was 6'8'' and long, he gave fighters problems.

Long guys that suck are Wes Sims and Gan McGee. Tim's skill set wasn't great, but it certainly kept him above other fighters getting by on being big and tough.

The issue is that now we have heavyweights with incredible skill sets like Mir on the ground or Dos Santos standing as well as a bunch of big wrestlers who would certainly get takedowns on Tim when he was at his best.

Tim was awkward and unethletic.
But he hard great work ethic and he was really using his tools effectively.

He was not just a giant freak who won because of his size.
Sure, his size was his greatest strength.
But that is no different than any other physical trait that people have that makes them successful in any sport.
Would GSP be so successful if he wasn't so athletic and explosive?

You're being results-oriented, Jim. Don't look at his record, but look at his skills. Apply it to an average heavyweight, and even in 2000, that heavyweight would probably have a losing record. Tim had no lateral footwork, terrible striking technique (chin is always too high), no wrestling, no submission defense or submission offense, yet he was able to be competitive. Why do you think that is, if not almost entirely because of his size?

I disagree, but you're right I am looking at results. He's got a good jab and even added some kicks later on. He plods for sure, but he cuts off the cage well. His takedown defense is pretty good, and his sub defense isn't horrible. He was only subbed by Nog, Fedor, Arlovski and Mir. Couture, Monson, Silva etc certainly tried to get him down and sub him plenty of times. Sure he powered out of a lot of stuff, but he knew what stuff it was to escape.

Remember when folks praised Nog's stand-up and Tim lit him up? Yes he had reach and 4 inches height on him, but discounting his stand-up when he outstruck everybody but Fedor is just silly.

If Semmy Schilt and Hong Man Choi became Pride Champs I say you were right, but Tim did well with the gifts he had. It also helped that the wrestling in the HW division of the UFC sucked. I wonder what Kerr or Coleman could have done in 2005.

If size was the only tool that Timmy had, how come he dominated people who was equal and even superior to him in that aspect?

Look at any HW and apply it to an average bantamweight, and even in 2000, that bantamweight would probably have a losing record.

With bigger size you lose speed and technique.
Timmy worked really hard with the tools given to him and he had a lot of success with it. That is more than you can say for most fighters at the time.

It grosses me out that supposed MMA experts would call what Sylvia showed in his fights good. He was a big, plodding fat guy, people. Opponents had problems with his size. That's it. That enabled him to do things like make Arlovski run into his upper cut when he threw it with his eyes closed. If his striking was so good, how come he couldn't stop Jeff Monson on the feet when he had like a 4 mile reach advantage? If he was such a threat, how come he was winning safe decisions against the likes of Assuerio Silva and fence fucking Brandon Vera?

If you want to argue he did the best with what he had, fine. That's agreeable. If you want to approach anything close to "his so and so was pretty good" then you don't look at MMA like a person who has trained it, but probably a fan, and thus I should probably stop debating technique with you.

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight champion Frank Mir (16-6 MMA, 14-6 UFC) is temporarily leaving the octagon in favor of a Strikeforce cage.

USA TODAY Sports confirmed with UFC and Strikeforce officials that Mir has agreed to meet Strikeforce grand prix winner and former two-time Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier (10-0 MMA, 7-0 SF) in the co-main event of September's Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy fight card, on Sept. 29 at Power Balance Pavilion in Sacramento, and airs on Showtime.

"There has been a lot of speculation as to who Cormier would fight next, and this is the fight that makes the most sense," UFC president Dana White said. "The reality is, Cormier is one of the best heavyweights in the world. He just won the grand prix and beat Josh Barnett. He needs to fight opponents of that caliber, and Frank Mir is that guy."

I think it's a great test. Cormier couldn't finish Barnett standing and Mir has better striking. On the ground Mir has better subs. I see Mir taking round one and then we'll see if Cormier can capitalize on Mir's gas tank issues.
