The 2006 ESPYs
http://espn.go.com/espy2006/index.html
Vote early, vote often. Campaign for your favorites in this thread, just as I am about to... I am a proud staff member and graduate from George Mason University. You may have heard of us this past spring in our improbable run to the Final Four. GMU is up for "Best Moment" and "Best Coach" for Coach Larranaga. Please consider casting your votes in these two catagories to honor my favorite school's amazing season. No MMA voting, but they do have "Best Boxer"...

Greenburg from Mike and Mike in the Morning on ESPN Radio had a GREAT point..
Why in blue hell isn't Roger Federer nominated for men's athlete of the year? He's far and away the best tennis player on planet Earth, and he didn't even warrant a nomination? The ESPY's always do this. Last year it was not nominating the awesome WVU vs. Wake Forest NCAA Tourney game that went to two OT's in the Sweet 16 for game of the year. |

You'll need Flash 7 to access the 2006 ESPYS. Please install the free plug-in so you don't miss out on the best sports stories of the year.

Best Male Athlete - Albert Pujols. Voting for Lance Armstrong is old hat. And after Dwayne Wade's performance in the finals, how DARE they give Lebron the basketball nod?
Best Female Athlete - Anika Sorenstam. Because I don't care about the other three. Best Team - The Miami Heat. Why? Because they have Wade, Shaq, Zo, Payton, Walker, Haslem, Williams, are coached by Pat Riley and they STILL won an NBA Championship. Best Coach/Manager - Jim Larranaga. Because overacheivers deserve to be noticed. Best Game - Andre Agassi vs. James Blake. If you actually watched this, there's no way to vote for anything else. Best Championship Performance - Dwayne Wade. He earned comparisons to Jordan. Good enough. Best Moment - Dakoda Dowd. I'm not voting for either ball hog, and sentimental cancer story > GMU's Cinderella run. Sorry. Best Play - Tyrone Prothro. Please. Nothing else is even CLOSE. Best Comeback - Tedy Bruschi. Blue collar guy makes good. Again. Best Breakthrough Athlete - Chris Paul. Because I don't know who the other three are, really. Best Record Setting Performance - Kalen Pimentel. 18 strikeouts in 6 innings. Read that again. 18 strikeouts in 6 innings. Screw everything else. Best Sports Movie - Cinderella Man. It wasn't nominated? It was from last year? Well too bad. Everything this year sucked. I'm also abstaining from Best US Olympian and Best Male and Female Action Sport. Why? Because they're all dumb awards. Best Male College Athlete - Reggie Bush. Barry Sanders 2.0. I won't vote for Best Female College Athlete because there are no pictures and I don't know if any of them are hot. I also won't vote for the cripples or best fisherman. Best Driver - Tony Stewart. He won the only motorsports championship that matters. Best Baseball Player - Albert Pujols. Nobody else is close to this guy. It's like he was genetically engineered to play baseball. Best NBA Player - Dwayne Wade. He won a championship. Those other guys didn't. End of discussion. The WNBA is not a sport, hence I will not select a winner. Best Bowler - Chris Barnes. He won LOTS of money. Why even have these awards? The guy won more money than anyone else, so he's obviously better than them. Or he was this season. Dumb. I'm not voting for Best NFL player out of spite. Brady > Manning. Moss > Smith. Lots of peole > Urlacher. And I can't in clear conscience vote for Tomlinson and I refuse to vote for Alexander. Best Golfer - Phil Mickelson. Why not? No vote for best Jockey, MLS Soccer player, or "footballer" because all three of those are dumb as hell. I don't care about the best midget on a horse or who did the best job at running around a field for three hours. Best Boxer - Jermain Taylor. Say what you will about the quality of the decisions, he has two wins and a draw against Bernard Hopkins and Winky Wright. That's impressive. Best Male Tennis Player - Roger Federer dominates everything. Best Female Tennis Player - Justine Hennin-Hardinne or whatever. Because she's kind of hot. I decline on the track and field voting. Best International Athlete - Roger Federer. Simply because he should be nominated for Best Male Athlete. I know nothing about hockey. |

best male athlete - pujols, the guy is amazing.
best femal athlete - don't care best team - the heat. i hate them, but they were pretty damn good. best coach - billy donovan. he won the ncaa championship with an unranked team in pretty convincing form. best game - usc vs texas. didn't see the tennis one and the only thing that really stood out about the baseball game was that nobody scored for a really long time. best championship performance - d-wade. i had a really hard time choosing between wade and vince young, but when it came down to it, i'm just like wade more. best moment - justin mcelwain - anyone who doesn't vote for this has a black hate-filled heart. what he did would have been downright amazing if he wasn't autistic, but since he is it was one of the greatest things i've ever seen. the story was on the news like 50 times in the days after it happened and every single time i still got goosebumps. best play - david wright. the only other play i actually saw was rowand's catch, which was also pretty cool. but wright's play was an amazing display of skill whereas rowand's was more of an amazing display of someone playing a flyball wrong and then running face-first into a wall. best comeback - ronny turiaf. i'll admit i'm biased on this once, since he plays for the lakers. but he came back from open heart surgery after 6 months, even though the doctors said he would probably never play again and if he did it would take at least a year. breakthrough athlete - chris paul. deep down, i kinda think ovechkin deserves this, but i've been a huge chirs paul nuthugger since he was in college so it was great to see him come in and do so good in his rookie year. best record-breaking performance - kalen pimental. first of all, 18 strikoutes in 6 innings is incredible. secondly, shaun alexander and ben roethlisberger's feats were team efforts. lastly, metzger is a fag. best sports movie - didn't see any of the nominations best u.s. olympian - anyone except shaun white, that guy's a giant bag of douche. best male/female action sports athlete - don't know, don't care. best college athlete - vince young. i probably would have voted for bush, but that lateral he attempted in the rose bowl was wicked stupid. i didn't vote for the next couple of ones because i don't care about any of them. best baseball player - a-rod. it came down to him and pujols. i think that pujols is currently better than a-rod, but last year a-rod was just as good at the plate as pujols was and he was much more valuable on defense. best basketball player - kobe. another admittedly biased pick, but the guy was great. without him the lakers are one of the worst teams in the entire league, with him they take the suns to 7 games in the playoffs. doesn't hurt that he scored 81 points in a game. wnba and bowling - don't care. best nfl player - i didn't think any of the choices really stood out, so i just picked lt because he's my favorite out of all of them. didn't vote for the next couple of ones. best boxer - bernard hopkins. i know it isn't really fair, but i voted for him more for his lifetime accomplishments than for what he did this year. however, i think he should have won both his fights against taylor, and he beat tarver, which was pretty impressive. mayweather is pretty fucking good too, but he's a cock. best nhl - joe thorton. undeniable performance - kobe. 81 fucking points. professional grade play award - i'm not really sure what the criteria for this catagory was, so i just voted for doug flutie because he's got a cereal named after him and an autistic kid. |
