Mike Fowler got Daniel Moraes in a fully extend armlock in the second round of the world BJJ championships, so Moraes slammed Fowler on his head/neck which is grounds for DQ, as you're not allowed to slam or spike your opponent on their head to get out of a submission. the ref did not DQ Moraes, but instead allowed the match to continue and Moraes won 2-0.

and in the way of gossip... the ref was Marcio Cruz's instructor so now Brandon Vera wants to fight Marcio Cruz.

Sounds like he was robbed. Hopefully Vera gives Cruz a beating. Not because of the match as much, but just in general.

I'd heard something like that, and wasn't 100% on it. They gave Moraes pionts for passing to side off of the slam-pass. Horseshit, but I had something similar happen at the East Coast Championships a couple months ago. After dealing with the guy getting some points on me, I decided I had to work fast, and baited him with an arm, he went for it, I stacked and pulled it out, and stepped over so he couldn't roll clear. He roleld back, and grabbed my toes and my heel and twisted (a desperation move that was doomed to failure, but blatantly illegal). The ref stopped us, and gave him a warning, and he tries to twist it the OTHER way, so the ref stops the match altogether for a moment and goes into an impromptu rules meeting. The timekeeper yells out "One minute left!", so I was like "What the hell!!" and jumped back on the guy, sunk one hand deep in the collar as he managed to get half guard. I get the other hand in and go to loop around for the choke, and they stop us because we've technically been on the next match over's mat space since I escaped the armbar, because the guy was trying to roll off the mat when I stepped over. We're repositioned, and the guy puts on the lockdown and grabs ahold of both my wrists and is trying to reposition his head to defend the choke before the ref gives us the go ahead, and when they finally let us go, time ran out seconds later. I was never even given the points for the side or back, and lost 8-0 ("takedown", passed my half, and then took mount before the armbar fake and all the nonsense).

I still took home the silver, but it was like the ref had it out for me. I pulled guard after a mistep at the end of a prolonged grip-fight, and he got two points by basically pushing me along the mat until we were stopped after I pulled. The second he cut the knee across, they gave him the four for mount, and that's when I said fuck it and pushed up with the arm, because he was a heavy dude, and I wasn't sure I was gonna get out from under there. The ref waited for me to establish control, and repositions us.

It sucks, especially on the world stage, but like Lloyd say, that shit happens all the time. You just gotta look ahead.

I had that exact same ref, ref 3 of my matches at the arnolds this year.

and regardless of what the results state, the word generally gets out who the real winners were. see Yushin Okami's UFC contract and Jake Shield's... boos and empty venue for the ROTR final.

Are you serious, or did you just get fucked at the Arnolds?

And were there MMA fights at the Arnolds this year... or ever? A guy in my old home own that had one open hand fight as an undercard amatuer match on an early Mass Destruction event and is a purple under Billy Bob Gracie or whatever was going on to a friend of mine about his "fight" at an "mma event", and showed off a medal or trophy from teh Arnolds, and was saying he got a personal invite or something when talking about how he travels all over fighting.

He basically is still trying to hype himself in order to hype the school him, a kid from a TKD school that was down the street from my high school, and a 50yo "retired" amatuer kickboxer with a 3-1 record run out of an old bar.

Lunacy.
