Josh Brown goes toe to toe With Jens Pulver

Josh Brown Goes toe to toe with Jens "Little evil" Pulver
Brought to you by "The Josh Brown Show" a Bloodyknux.com exclusive

As I sat in my truck awaiting to make a phone call that will change my life forever, I had the phone number of my hero in my left hand, and my chest in my right. Feeling like I was a 16 year old Josh Brown who just got a number from the hot server at Tim Hortons, I was scared they weren’t gonna pick up, so I was already planning my answering machine message. As I call the Iowa number on my lunch break from my cement job someone answers on the other end and says, “Give me a second, let me put in my ear piece so I can hear you better” That’s when I knew I was talking to the first Lightweight Champion in the UFC’s History, I was talking to ….. Lil Evil Jens Pulver

Congratulating him on his upcoming wedding, he said along with his kids, his wedding and wife over shadow his UFC belt. “My mom always told me that “you’ll find someone who fits you”, you know”, Jens said. “When I was twenty years old I always said I’ll never get married, but me and Kannika never fight, for the two and a half years we’ve been together we haven’t fought once, I’ve never been happier”.

With the hardships and tough childhood fuelled with anger Jens has defiantly found peace and love. “My biggest battle has been my life, My father always telling me ill never amount to nothing”. Not having a father figure though helped Jens become the man he is today. Jens Pulver, The fighter, the husband, and the Father. “My little girl is coming, I watch lots of cartoon DVD’s, we have bolt in the house, and I watch lots of Shrek”.

Josh Brown – Growing up Jens, did you have any Idols, anyone you looked at and said, I wanna be like them.

Jens – Growing up I had a rough child like everyone knows but I looked at my coaches. I learned hard work, dedication, and work ethic. Taught me to control the anger I had from my father beating me and they saved my life, They saved my life. I loved boxing and I always love to watch Mike Tyson’s amateur fights and when he first came out, I Always Loved the little guy, and for Wrestlers we all wanted to be Jon Smith.

Josh Brown- You follow boxing now? Who are some fighters you are looking at in the Boxing World?

Jens – I’m a huge boxing fan, always have been, Manny Pacquiao and Mayweather. When Pacquiao wants to bang and slug man he is a tough guy to beat with his speed and power, but Mayweather is just so good. When Gatti hit him with one shot and Floyd came back with three it was like Mayweather just boxes so excellent, you can’t catch up to him, and can’t hit him, he is so good. I love Kostya Tzyu I sat ring side to his Zab Juda fight, I love Kostya Tzyu.

Josh Brown – If you could wake up every morning and put a fight in the VCR or DVD player what fight would it be, what fight could you watch every day.

Jens – People will be surprised by this answer but I go way back with this guy, remember him hitting the heavy bag at shamrock 2000, but Nick Diaz vs Gomi. I could watch that fight every day. With everything that lead up to the fight and the way the fight went down, I was so proud of Nick. Nick and I go way back. For Nick to beat Gomi the way he did, warring him down and then finishing him. Yeah Gomi beat me but he was steam rolling coming up to that fight and Nick Just beat him. That’s why when I got to coach Nathan on the Ultimate fighter 5 I was like great cause me and Nick have known each other since back in the day. No one has ever asked me that question, but yeah Nick Diaz vs Gomi, I could watch that fight every day.

Josh Brown- If you could fight someone every Saturday, who would you fight?

Jens – Well I don’t wanna bring up any grudge again but BJ man, he always geared me up. We buried our grudge a while ago and I’m not trying to start any new one, but when you fight BJ if you are on the ground he can Sub you, if you stand he’ll beat yeah, I would have to improve every week to fight BJ. It would be good for me, and I think it would be good for him. I would benefit from it, you know, get me better, and that’s been my problem as of late, I’ve lost four fights and fighting BJ would get me geared up again.

Josh Brown – What is one thing that a fan has said to you or done that you thought, wow!

Jens – My fans send me emails, and tell me stories, share hardships, and how I’ve helped them. I’ve read emails and had tears brought to my eyes. I’m not the type that says, “oh look at me, love me” If you have a story I’m not gonna say “Oh yeah well listen to this”. Someone in Ontario sent me a message, and I just wrote back to them on Facebook, and said that they had really given me a lift today. I sometimes think that like me, people go to the gym and train or work out when they get a lift like that, cause I just get jacked up. If I can relate to them, I will help them.

Josh Brown – You have walked down to the cage or ring too many times to count them all up, what was the one song you came down to and said “Yes, this is my song”.

Jens – Simple Man, Not by Lenard Skinner but by “the Charles Daniels Band”, The one I got now, basically saying I’ll be at my front door with my Shotgun protecting what is mine, Not running around and starting stuff, bullies are the types of people I wanna push through the wall, you can’t let bullies push you around. People are weak right now, letting people push them around. I come down to that song I go, “this is me” I’m a fighter, A family man, a simple man, I defend the right now, and enjoy what I’ve done and enjoy what I do.

Josh Brown – I never ever found out who gave you the name Lil Evil
Jens - Pat Miletich, “Little Evil Bastard” I came into the gym one day all hot headed, “Fuck this and that” just being angry, and he called me a little evil bastard, and then after my fight with John Lewis he said, “we are gonna call you that now, Little Evil”. Then I just made little into Lil. But that’s just it too cause you can’t judge a book by its cover. My mom heard my name and she is a church going lady, and thought Lil Evil? I had to tell her I’m not gonna go around starting stuff it’s just my fight name. There is Jens Pulver, and then there’s Little Evil. Some people might see me fighting and think yeah I’m a mean little evil bastard, but they don’t know the religious father who helps Charity’s and gets people back on their feet, giving the second chances I got.

Josh Brown – So when you were in the Miletich Fighting System, training with the likes of Matt Hughes, Jeremy Horn, Josh Neer, Tim Sylvia, Robbie Lawler, back when the MFS was the most feared club on the planet, who did you not wanna spare with, you looked across the mat and said, oh shit.

Jens– Matt Hughes! He was so damn strong. I would hear him yell “Here jensie, come on buddy” when it was are turn to grapple or wrestle. When we had boxing I had my days but damn I had two days of wrestling where Matt beat me like he was my big brother. Then Jeremy horn he came and he just made everyone better. No offence to Pat but Jeremy with his ground work he put a lot of things together.

Josh Brown – Do you think that opponents are intimidated by you?

Jens – They Should be, I’m the Pioneer of this division. I stand across from them and you know they look at me and say “oh man that’s him” Faber said “ I watched him in highschool” hell Grispi said he saw me in sixth Grade.

Josh Brown – Ok well lets have some fun Jens, I’ll say a name or thing and you give me the first word or sentence that comes to your brain, ok?
Jens – Ok let’s go

Josh Brown – Mike Brown

Jens – Solid, Strong

Josh Brown – Jose Aldo

Jens – WOW! Period!

Josh Brown – BJ Penn

Jens – Pioneer, Pride, he has lots of pride

Josh Brown – Urijah Faber

Jens – Explosive, funny

Josh Brown – Matt Hughes

Jens– Older Brother

Josh Brown – Hughes vs Penn 3?

Jens – Lets sit and wait, he has to defend his belt to be the champ, Florian is first and Florian is dangerous, Good ground, Good strikes, Good Elbows, Good All around. BJ has to eventually Defend his title. Then after that, will sit and see what comes.

Josh Brown – Lyoto Machida

Jens – Frustrating, absolute Frustration, he causes Frustration, you can’t hit him, you can’t find him, and then he hits you in the mouth.

Josh Brown – You think anyone out there can beat him

Jens – Well we have to see, it will take time, he is a traditional karate guy, he has great ground and great stand up, you just gotta go in there and push him around, bully him, but one thing he has done is plastered a bulls eye on his chest.

Josh Brown – The Ultimate Fighter

Jens – Ping Pong, and not the game we played, it was just so back and forth, I had some lack of self esteem issues going into the show, and didn’t think I was worth anything, but the show got me amped, there times where it was good times and bad.

Josh Brown – Feather weight division in the UfC?

Jens – No need, The WEC is the little brother of the UFC. The WEC builds competition; look at the guys we are bringing up. It’s the home of these little guys. The UFC already has so many people under contract, so there is no need right now. Fighters wanna stay busy. People are leaving the WEC shows going wow! Those little guys can fight. It’s not like I got kicked out of the UFC, WEC is still Dana White, I talk with Dana and Lorenzo still. A couple years ago us little guys didn’t have a home, now we are the WEC.

Josh Brown – So when it is all said and done and Jens, you have to stepped away from fighting, where do you go? What do you do?

Jens- I’m gonna make sure peoples doors don’t close, help people, like my coaches helped me. Not only start a gym, but a fitness center. Before we work out, let’s find you a job, see what we can get. I wanna give people the chances I got.

Jens Pulver will always be my most favorite fighter of all time. No matter what you say he is not done fighting! He fights every day, for his family, his friends, and himself. “The Simple Man” was the first song I listened to after the interview and immediately wanted to go train. Jump in there with Team Shredder and throw kicks, sink a Go Go. Jens Pulveris a warm human being who went through so much to give even more. And now not only will Jens be my Fighting Idol, but someone I will go to bed easy at night knowing if I ever needed someone to talk to he would be there to answer his phone. Thank you Jens! You have opened my eyes to the man behind the Evil. The “Lil Evil” that is. You are somebody that everyone should talk to at least once.

The Josh Brown Show this week is the Sudbury Downs Race Track, Team Shredder, and a Beasty Boy!!

Josh Brown ……. Out! Peace son!
