Someone had to start it, so here it is.

First order of business discussion-wise: Oakland signing Ben Sheets as their ace for the 2010 season. 10 million dollars, eh? LMFAO. Great, that should almost cover his emergency room bill and electronic wheelchair once he stubs his fucking toe on the god damn mound and lands himself on the 30 day disabled list come August.

Thome rocking the bench for Minnesota at Target Field should be interesting, though. Hopefully the old guy doesn't turn into another Rubin Sierra washout once he puts on Twin City colors, though.

Really excited about baseball returning. I'm eagerly anticipating seeing Casey Kelly's development with the Sox this year. Their pitching staff is loaded.

Allison spent last season in A-ball, he should be promoted to AA this season, though he won't start camp there, he had one start at AA last year that went well. Marlins haven't given up hope on him and he still has great stuff and raw ability, he just needs to remain sober and put together back-to-back seasons.

Just to let everyone know Jeff Allison was the Marlins #1 draft pick in 2003, Baseball America rated him as player of the year, he was much ballyhooed and the prince of our prospects. Unfortunately, he developed an addiction to heroine and painkillers and missed all of 2004, he went to rehab, came back but then fell off the wagon and nearly killed himself overdosing on heroine. After another overdose, evading a warrant, and a stint in jail he is in the process of making yet another comeback.

Was Allison the guy who got hooked on drugs in like 2005? I remember I use to make a killing off Bowman Chrome rookie cards, I put a ton of money in Allison.

The Rangers are my pick to win it all, they probably wont win the division but man they are fun to watch

Here's the article for those unfamiliar with him. I've known Jeff
since I was about 11 or 12 (he's a few years younger than me but he played above his age group), we grew up playing CYO b'ball (I was one of 2 allowed non-Catholics on my team, namely because I was sick at b'ball). He grew up in a medium sized town called Peabody (Peebudy) 2 towns away from me. Good kid, always seemed a bit troubled for someone that talented.

Jeff was the guy that should have made it. Maybe he still will, who knows. There are parts of the North Shore of Boston that are gorgeous and quite rich but most of it is in the working/middle class ballpark. His town, Peabody, is called the Tanners because of the leather products they classically put out. Oxycotin hit my area hard when I was in high school. The rich kids that bought coke transitioned into it and the poor people that wanted crack/heroin pushed it (namely in Lynn, Salem and Revere). It was the thing that people got snagged on. Maybe it's meth now, I'm not sure, but booze and oxy's put a lot of people in the hospital and the morgue.

I'd drank and hung out with Jeff before but had no idea about his drug stuff. Right before the draft in which the Marlins took him, rumors began flying around Boston that he was a 'troubled' kid. He was a bit of a knucklehead, but this was news to me. I was friends with him mainly through my buddy Kevin ( http://www.bucknellbison.com/sports/...t_kevin00.html ) who was an unreal b'ball player. Jeff had committed to Arizona when he was a freshman or something but signed Boras as his agent and went through the draft. He was the Mass and the USA high school player of the year. Represented the US in international competitions and was the posterboy of prep baseball. Clocked at 100 MPH! Averaged something like 18 strikeouts a game or something retarded like that! The best pitcher since Jeff Juden (Salem HS)!

The Marlins took him #16 in an absolutely stacked draft (http://www.baseball-reference.com/bu..._amateur_draft) after Jeff was told by the Tigers there was no way they were letting him slip beyond #3. Boras' price ($2MM signing bonus) and character questions started to push people away. The Red Sox, ironically, had the next pick in the draft but weren't going to take him. Too much pressure, too many stories rumbling around.

I remember where I was when a friend from home called me and said Jeff disappeared. When they found him OD'ing on junk. It still doesn't sit right with me. He should have been the guy. I mean shit, the Marlins traded Beckett to the Sox because they knew Jeff could fill in almost immediately.

To me personally, Jeff is the single greatest disappointment to ever come out of Boston. There were thousands of people at his high school games. His teammates ended up getting scholarships to play solely because so many scouts were there. One scout told me that his catcher, who ended up getting a scholly to some SEC school (Vandy maybe?), that "anyone that can catch a future major league all-star without breaking his hand deserves a free ride." No joke.

People compare him to Josh Hamilton. He isn't Josh Hamilton. Not yet anyway. As of right now, he's just another junkie that didn't make it. Believe me when I say it, that sentence hurt to type.

I fucking hate Josh Hamilton and anybody else who has a story like his. That whole circus surrounding the Home Run Derby back in 2008 was just disgusting. There's nothing I find more vomitous than a top tier athlete receiving an even more celebrity-like distinction for having "turned his life around" and excelling. Like anyone deserves additional praise for that.
