My short interview with Jens Pulver at Team USA vs. The World

I got lucky enough to be able to get Jens Pulver to chat with me for a few minutes in between rounds at Team USA vs The World over the weekend. Here's what he had to say:

Me: What do you think of the event so far tonight?

Jens: I love it. Number one: That Wixtand. He’s not even out of highschool and the well-roundedness of these guys is incredible. When I started we had tank abbot and those guys. They were 1-dimensional fighters. They were either a wrestler or a boxer. Seeing these transitional guys makes me feel good. Then we have these guys from Ireland coming to say hi to ME. It’s very flattering. They tell me “We love you Jens” and I’m like “Oh my god”. I’m very thankful to be where I’ve been and done what I’ve done.

Me: What’s next for Jens Pulver?

Jens: August 14th man. People wanna talk about “Jens, you’re ruining your brand, you’re ruining your name.” No I’m not. You know what my name was? My name was Jens Pulver when I was born. You know what it’s going to be when I’m dead? Jens Pulver. Everything I do in the middle is about Jens Pulver. Nobody’s going to tell me when to retire. Now am I getting hurt? No. No, I’m not getting Chuck Liddell’d. No offense Chuck. I’m not getting knocked out. I’m not half-dead. I like competing. I love it. I enjoy it. That is what I am. I’m the hard knocks kid. I’m the kid who was born with a shotgun in his mouth and I’m trying to turn that thing in to a silver spoon for his children. That’s it. I love to do what I’m doing. I’m performing and I’m doing what I love. All I want is for everyone to do what they love.”

Me: What do you think of the upcoming Chael Sonnen/Anderson Silva fight and all the trash talking?

“Well I think Chael Sonnen did a great job of getting everyone hyped up for Chael Sonnen because up until that trash talking, I don’t think anybody cared about what he was doing. He was a great wrestler, but I just don’t think anybody gave a rat’s puke. Now it’s either A: People wanna see him get beat because he ran his mouth or B: You wanna see him win because he ran his mouth. I love that. That’s a great tactic. It works for some people. Brock Lesnar: He did it great, you know, people wanted to kill him. Coming in with that WWE mentality. He had to play off that. The thing is, whether they hate you or like you, they’re going to come watch you. And Chael did that. He brought hype and interest to a fight where in the beginning, people were like ‘whatever’”

Me: What do you think of the recent Brock Lesnar/Shane Carwin bout?

Jens: Here’s my thing about that fight. Brock, you need to just start going against people with stand-up and learn that you can block punches. A lot of those shots missed you and you fell over flinching. Carwin: If you have a lactic-acidosis problem, get it fixed. Because if you are that dead tired after a round… man… brother… you had it! (inaudible) and you hurt him! But Brock: My hat’s off to him for simply going out there (inaudible) he got knocked down and people say the fight should’ve been stopped but when the referee asked “Brock, do something” He moved his hands. He did something. Guess what, he’s coherent. You gotta let him do his thing. I wanna thank always John Waldo, Fighting Sports, and Title MMA.
