Operation Octagon 14 Sterling Virginia

Another great show this Saturday night at Dulles Sportsplex, and a nice balance of fights. Good competitive matches, and a couple real wars kept the crowd cheering the whole time.

The Octagon's Ring Girls

In the second bout we had the only blemish on the evening. Steven Adams and Josh Kearney came out blasting, and Kearney's initial pressure secured him the first round even though at the end of the round Adams started to turn things around. Round 2 picked up with Adams taking control, and Kearney was "on the ropes" half way through the round. Then Adams made a rookie mistake and kicked his downed opponent. Keirney couldn't quickly recover from the blow, and the fight went to the cards with a point deduction for the illegal blow.

Even though Adams was clearly taking over the fight, he had let the first round go, and all 3 judges awarded him the second, but with the point deduction he lost by decision. I think he'd of preferred a DQ loss which at least asks for an explanation rather than a decision that implies he lost the fight due to being bested. Hopefully a learning experience for Adams, and maybe an exciting rematch in the future?

In the eighth match of the evening 125 pound champ Bryan Robey stepped up a weight class as a 125 pound challenger could not be found. In a non-title match Aubrey Hummer did his best to teach the champ why we have weight classes, and bested him with clinch work against the cage and repeatedly getting superior position on the ground wearing down Robey for a TKO in the second round. Robey will surely be back, and probably a little wiser.

Migo DeOcampo looked so relaxed before and during his match I'm convinced he'd be narcoleptic if he wasn't a fighter. His opponent quickly regretted getting a takedown as Migo threw one submission after another, even coming close to sinking in a omoplata. Round two had some trading at the beginning of the round before DeCampo landed a chin check and in the following scramble Migo sinks in rear naked choke for another impressive victory.

The night ended with a once sided bout in the 155 title match as Mike Pope used his superior wrestling to keep the Champ Jesse Mitchell Jr from getting off much offense. Pope played it pretty safe but opened up in the final round with a little more ground and pound to take away any doubt for the judges.

New Champ Mike Pope

Speaking with the promoter at the show, I was pleased to find out the Operation Octagon is getting a new sponsor, and will be upping their game with another Pro-Am show in July. Always excited to have professional MMA bouts close to home.
