Things are heating up in the Winter Meetings with Jose Reyes and Heath Bell signing with the Marlins. Albert Pujols has been offered a 10-year contract with the team as well. Word out there is that Seattle is in the drivers seat for Prince Fielder as other teams are not willing to give him a long term contract.

what does everybody think about the new Marlins logo?

New stadium, "Florida" gone and "Miami" in, new logo, new jersey, new manager and new players.

The Marlins have done this in the past, just dump contracts and then sign the big names to win the World Series. It's smart, not sure why other teams haven't tried it but it has to be frustrating to fans.

Angels made a splash and will be in contention. It's amazing what 1 player can do, one of the best in the game, on a team that was already 10 games over .500. They already had some power, now they have a legit 3-4 hole hitter. Their power hitters may be up there in age, but they'll still get 20+ each next year. If Abreu can find his power again, Angels are going to be the SoCal Bombers

The entire city of St. Louis is pretty pissed at him leaving. I can't really blame them.

I know the Cardinals offered him a 9 year deal. Anyone know the figures?

What more does that guy need to do for the Cards franchise? He was part of 2 championships. He did his part, then he wanted to head west. At least it's the American League.

For me, it sucks. Being a Mariners fan, there are now 2 teams ahead of them with depth and free agent pickups. If Seattle can't land Prince, Seattle is in for another 80-90 losses.

It's a loyalty thing. He was "born and raised" a Cardinal. Sort of implied he'd always be a Cardinal. Opened two restaurants here. His wife went on record saying she loved it here and wanted Albert to stay. It's a bit of a blow, then, that he cannot continue playing with us for 220 million over 9 years, but hey, whatever. He'll never win another WS but he's making more money. I guess he's getting what he wants.

Yu Darvish, just sign with Seattle. Seattle has one of the biggest Japanese communities in the United States. A couple of your old World Baseball Classic teammates play or have played here. Also one of the quicker flights back home.

As a Marlin fan I am just loving this orgy of spending, 191 million dollars! I'm actually relieved we didn't land Pujols, I'd rather the money go towards pitching. If we landed Pujols we would still be sending out Ricky Nolasco as our #2 pitcher against the Phillies, Pujols may have torpedoed their ability to spend in the future when he is 50 years old.

Hated the Bell signing, loved the Reyes and Buehrle signing.

Darvish was not exactly big game in the WBC almost giving a couple games away. But he was a lot younger at that time. Now, in Japan, he is equivalent of a Beatle or Michael Jackson. If he comes to the states, he'll just be looked at as a tourist if you saw him on the streets.

I hate sound ungrateful and complain about it, I think it's a philosophy I adopted from following the Marlins i.e. don't overpay for a closer. I think the closing position is an overrated and that you can find and develop closers on the cheap. The Marlins are notorious for finding diamonds in the rough and having them save 35-40 games: Armando Benitez, Todd fucking Jones, Joe Borowski, Leo Nunez (or whatever his real name is). In the 2003 run they had a committee of Ugueth Urbina and Braden Looper and they were fine. Otherwise, I'm very grateful for this offseason.

Marlins could've easily moved up one of their members of the bullpen to the closing position. They just costed themselves another bat with the Heath Bell pick-up. I am with Marshal that Heath Bell was overpaid. Who's knows how often he'll be pitching? There are times when the manager has to force closers to pitch in non-save opportunities just to get some game time miles in them. But to pay somebody that much to pitch against a couple batters every other night is ridiculous.

There is always somebody in your farm system that can step in to this position
