Chris Leban interview on MMA WEEKLY
Chris Leben is preparing to take on Patrick Cote August 6th, live on Spike TV. Coming off a dominating win over Jason Thacker, Chris seems focused, and determined to make himself known for his fighting skill rather than just that guy on the reality show. Leben spoke with MMAWeekly SoundOff Radio about his preparation, and his opponent, Patrick Cote.

"I won my Thacker fight, but I don't even really count that as a fight, so it's like I'm coming off loses. You know? Coming off getting cut, and getting held down, so I've been pretty fired up since the show. This whole time I've just been training twice a day every day pretty much. Pretty much that's all I do. I sleep. I eat, and I train. That's it." "I've just been training like crazy...getting ready for this fight." Chris Leben told MMAWeekly.

Chris was questioned if he's scaled back his partying since the reality show. He answered, "Quite a bit. Quite a bit. I took a few solid months off, and now I really don't, I really don't go out and party much anymore. You know? Having a girlfriend really helps with that. I just stay in, so it's pretty boring nowadays actually."

Discussing his opponent for the August 6th show, Patrick Cote, Leben isn't particularly impressed by Cote. He said, "I don't know that I really saw nothing that special out of him to be honest with you. He didn't look like he had the slickest submissions on the ground, or anything like that. You know he can take a hit, and I can take a hit. He likes to punch. I like to punch. It looks like a fun fight to me. I mean the advantage that I have over him, I'm probably slicker on the ground I would guess. Other than that it looks like a fun fight."

Asked about Patrick's stand up, Chris replied, "He throws straight punches which is rare in the UFC. He throws straight punches, and you know he rocked Tito that one time"

Leben's only concern is, "Me getting cut. That's the only thing I can really see happening in the fight that I have to worry about. You know? I mean I've never been knocked out before, not in a fight, so I don't think he'll be able to knock me out. I'll be punishing back just as hard whiles he's trying to do it, so I'm not really worried about that, and I don't think he has excellent submissions either." He added, "I've got a few tricks up my sleeve though. I've got a few surprises for you. I'll make sure to make it an exciting fight."

In closing Chris commented, "Right now, where I stand, I'm pretty happy. You know? I mean being locked into that contract, there's something to be said about that. It's sure worth a lot of money." "I lost, so I didn't get the contract, so now, you know, it's just one foot in front of the other. I'm just training, and worried about my next fight, and after this fight I suppose I'll sit back, and look at things, and figure out which way I want to go, and worry about my next fight."

I think Cote will dominate from bell to bell, but whether Leben breaks his jaw in the meantime is the question. Cote probably will put him away late though.

There's a reason why Leben gets no love. He talked an unbelievable load of shit while on the show and didn't back a single one of it up. He talked down on everyone, including his own teammates, but cried like a little brat when someone returned the favour. He even got blatant favouritism from his coach and still couldn't do shit with it. I hate lay and pray, but watching Koscheck send Leben home is right up there with watching Silva knock out Rampage, Randy spank Tito, Chuck knock out Tito, Nog tap Mirko and Randleman knock out Mirko. And I'll be adding another fight to that list after Cote, who is "nothing that special" according to Leben, is through with him.

I can't see it man. Leben's boxing is loose and one dimensional (big left you can see coming a mile away), decent movement while on the top but no movement on the bottom. IMHO any B level 185'er should be able to beat Leben by circling left, picking his shots, and putting him on his back when the opportunity arises.

However I will point out if Leben either wins this and acts gracious, or loses and doesn't cry I will stop thinking so poorly of him.

I've also heard it's Cote's last fight on his contract and they want to get rid of him if he loses again.


But still, they're not going to work a fight just for a TUF guy and short of a fluke (give him a puncher's chance to be fair), that's the only way I see Leben beating Cote.

it IS Cote's last fight on his expensive deal with Stephan Patry got him when they had him step up to fight tito.

I WASNT impressed when Cote fought Joe Dork. Not for a moment. So although I think Leban has the toughest initial TUF fight in the UFC out of any of those guys that have stepped up so far... I still think Leban is all around enough there to either take a hard fought JD or a TKO over Cote.
